Caustic ingestion continues to be a significant problem world-wide especially in developing countries and particularly in the under 6 years age group. The presence or absence of symptoms or oral lesions does not reliably predict the existence or severity of oesophageal lesions. Upper endoscopy remains the mainstay diagnostic modality for evaluation to define the extent and severity of the injury. This study evaluated whether or not medication usage among young adult women differed across three countries. An additional aim was to evaluate the association between medication use and sociodemographic factors and exercise habits. Cerivastatin is a synthetic HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor with high liver selectivity, which lowers plasma cholesterol levels by inhibiting endogenous cholesterol synthesis. In vitro, the affinity of cerivastatin for HMG-CoA reductase was higher than that of lovastatin, simvastatin and pravastatin. The protective capability of Maalox against indomethacin-induced gastric damage was evaluated in hamsters. The effect of acidification on the gastroprotection provided by Maalox against such damage was also determined. We have validated a method to measure bile salt binding by Maalox (aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide), Carafate (sucralfate), and Questran (cholestyramine) in vitro. The method used in this study involves a correction for adherent water volume and thus provides a correct measure of bile salt binding. The effect of four crystal sizes, gastric contents, and gastrointestinal motility on the absorption and excretion of nitrofurantoin was studied in three separate cross-over studies on 10 healthy volunteers. OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that influence the rate of healing of duodenal ulcers.
DESIGN: A stepwise multivariable statistical analysis of patients with duodenal ulcer in a multicenter, prospective, open-label study. Healing was assessed by endoscopy at 4 or 8 weeks. Antacid use and symptoms were recorded in a daily diary.
SUBJECTS: Of 135 patients, ages 19 to 86, 50% had a previous duodenal ulcer, 46.7% smoked, and 34.8% had melena or hematemesis.

: Cutaneous exposure to aluminum may occur via contact with metal items, medications, and personal care products. Despite the widespread use of aluminum, allergic contact dermatitis is relatively rare. Sensitization is often incidentally identified during patch testing with aluminum-based chambers. This article presents several cases along with a literature review summarizing prevalence and clinical manifestations of cutaneous reactions to aluminum, recommendations for patch testing, sources of aluminum, and reproducibility of aluminum allergy over time.

Various drugs are commonly used for the many gastrointestinal problems that are routinely seen in dogs and cats. Many of these drugs are briefly reviewed in this article. Anecdotal as well as documented findings are provided that will hopefully allow the clinician to use them wisely and effectively in the many clinical situations that arise daily. Emetics, although not used for gastrointestinal problems, are also reviewed because of their obvious connection with the gastrointestinal tract.
