The authors studied the characteristics of 376 eyes of 361 patients with primary retinal detachment (RD) and surgical aphakia (103 eyes) or pseudophakia (273 eyes). Of the pseudophakic eyes, 17 had an iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL), 111 had an anterior chamber (AC) IOL, and 145 had a posterior chamber (PC) IOL. Epikeratophakia surgery is a relatively new surgical technique which involves suturing of prelathed corneal tissue on top of the recipient's cornea. The epikeratophakia lens is lathed according to the recipient's refractive needs and therefore can correct myopia and hyperopia; a plano lenticle can be used to correct keratoconus. Long-term follow-up findings after argon laser trabeculoplasty are communicated. The coagulation technique employed was that described by Wise and Witter (1979). The circumference of the chamber angle was coagulated over 360 degrees. The indications were chronic open-angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, pigmentdispersion glaucoma, glaucoma in aphakia, and glaucoma after ALT or fistulizing surgery with uncontrolled IOP. The contact lens was prescribed to 64 cases, 38 of which having postsurgical monolateral aphakia. The lens extraction was made in 28 cases with traumatic cataract, 7 cases with complicated cataract and 3 cases with monolateral congenital cataract. The application of contact lens was made from two months to three years after the cataract operation; 6 patients wore before the surgical act usual glasses to correct the aphakia. After that the patients were called back monthly to controls; we used these opportunities to collect data about the advantages and disadvantages of contact lens wearing.

During November 1985 a survey was carried out to determine the prevalence and causes of blindness in the Elim Hospital district of Gazankulu in the Northern Transvaal, South Africa, and to assess the Eye Department's effectiveness in preventing blindness. Using a random cluster sample technique, we screened 18,962 of the estimated 71,200 inhabitants of the district (26.6%). We found 109 blind people.
