Pyrite, an iron sulfide, occurs in many soils and sediments, making it an important natural reductant of toxic metal pollutants. This study investigated the processes leading to aqueous Cr(VI) reduction by pyrite in a closed thermostated (25 +/- 0.1 degrees C) system and under an argon atmosphere. Carpal giant cell tumor of bone spanning multiple bones is a rare condition. We present a case of a man in his fifth decade with wrist pain who was found to have giant cell tumor of bone involving his capitate and hamate bones. This condition was successfully treated with intralesional curettage, argon beam coagulation, chemical cauterization and a cemented limited carpal fusion with satisfactory outcomes and no recurrence at 1-year postoperative follow-up.

Rhinophyma is a benign tumor of the nose. It possesses both functional and cosmetic implications. The pathophysiology of the disease is reviewed to illustrate the basis for the treatment options. Many different therapeutic modalities have been reported in the literature, each with reasonable success. A new treatment approach to this condition is developed using a combination of the Weck blade and the argon beam coagulator. This modality is found to be relatively simple and less traumatic than all the other techniques used by the senior author.

Laser-assisted tissue fusion has been investigated as a new technology to enhance the healing of soft tissues. Laser fusion of intestinal anastomoses shows promise as a method to obtain primary healing while eliminating a foreign-body reaction associated with the sutures. This paper reviews the experimental data that are available regarding laser-assisted intestinal anastomoses and summarizes our experience using the CO2, Nd:YAG, and argon lasers to form fusions in small bowel.

17 unilateral and 6 bilateral choanal atresias in children were observed in the ENT-Dept. of the University Hospital Erlangen during 1975-1982. Bilateral choanal atresia requires immediate trepanation by using the CO2 or Argon laser technique. The surgical procedure in unilateral choanal atresia is postponed until the age of 4 years. Transnasal microsurgical approach is preferred in these cases because it involves minimal damage to the developing structures. The satisfying results are reported.

A 22-year-old man was seen with the ocular histoplasmosis syndrome. This case demonstrates that spontaneous or "de novo" neovascularization without prior pigmentary changes can occasionally, although rarely, give rise to the disciform macular disease process and the potential for loss of central vision. The lesion initially responded favorably to treatment with heavy argon laser photocoagulation in the parafoveal area, including the papillomacular area, but subsequent areas of neovascularization proved intractable to laser therapy.

Clinical study of carotid artery laser endarterectomy began April 15, 1988. This report describes the first 10 cases that were performed in nine patients (five men and four women, mean age 70 years). Case report concerning a young man in whom exudative retinitis had occurred as a result of the A-V shunt of a retinal angioma, leading to sudden loss of vision. With argon laser and xenon arc photocoagulation a minor hemorrhage cleared up spontaneously, the retina remained attached and vision increased to 20/25 within 1 year. The authors believe that the combined photocoagulation insured an interruption of blood flow in feeder vessels and the breakdown of the intervening capillary bed.

While the archetypal free phosphinidene, H-P, has been studied for over a century, reports on uncomplexed, univalent phosphorus compounds are very sparse. Here we demonstrate production of HCCP in solid argon through the UV-induced rearrangement and subsequent dehydrogenation of phosphapropyne, CH3 CP. Migration of H atoms along the CCP backbone of CH3 CP resulted in production of the previously unobserved species 1-phosphapropadiene, CH2 =C=PH, followed by ethynylphosphine, HCCPH2 .

BACKGROUND: Multiple glomus tumors are uncommon cutaneous neoplasms. Therapeutic destructive alternatives include excision, argon or CO2 laser treatment, and sclerotherapy with sodium tetradecyl sulphate.
OBJECTIVE: A case report is presented using a previously unreported technique of therapy, specifically hypertonic saline.
METHODS: 23.4% NaCl was injected intraluminally in four sessions over a 6-month period.
CONCLUSION: Serial hypertonic saline injections should be added to the list of effective treatment alternatives for multiple glomus tumors.

We report a case of HELLP syndrome with bilateral decreased vision at 25 weeks' gestation. Fundus examination revealed serous retinal detachment involving the macula. Systemic steroid and oral dorzolamide therapy was initiated and visual acuity improved. At 2 months, peripheral localized tractional retinal detachment was present in the left eye and argon laser photocoagulation was performed. Macular elevation did not resolve; therefore, in the right eye intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide injection was performed.

Subretinal neovascularization associated with retinochoroidal coloboma is a rare finding. Only two other cases have been reported in the literature, neither of which were treated with photocoagulation. Here, the author reports a case of subretinal neovascular net associated with a retinochoroidal coloboma, which was treated with laser photocoagulation. The patient's vision improved from 20/200 to 20/30-1 following two argon green laser treatments, with a 33-month follow-up since the initial treatment.

Gastropleural fistula (GPF) is a rare disease characterized by fistulous tract between gastric and pleural cavities via the diaphragm. The authors present diagnosis and comprehensive treatment of a patient with GPF. Endoscopic closure of gastric wall defect using the Apollo OverStitch device for intraluminal suturing followed by video-assisted argon plasma coagulation (VAP) of cavity walls through thoracostomy and placement of vacuum aspiration system resulted in a positive clinical outcome in a patient with delayed postoperative complication.

Argon blue-green or diode laser indirect ophthalmoscope photocoagulation, performed through the transparent wall of an incubator, was used to treat threshold retinopathy of prematurity in two premature infants who were in poor systemic condition and could not be treated out of the incubator. Despite technical difficulties posed in one or both cases by their lateral position, small pupils, persistent tunica vasculosa lentis, and hazy cornea, there were no systemic complications and the retinopathy regressed in both cases.
