[Analysis of mortality and leading causes of death in Chinese children under 5-year-old between 2010 and 2016].

We collected death data of children under 5-year-old in China from the national child mortality surveillance system from 2010 to 2016. The change of mortality rate and causes of death were described. The mortality rate of Chinese children under 5-year-old decreased from 16.4‰ to 10.2‰ in all areas between 2010 and 2016, from 20.1‰ to 12.4 ‰ in rural areas and from 7.3‰ to 5.2‰ in urban areas, respectively, with a greater average annual decreasing rate in rural areas than urban area. During these years, in addition to traffic accidents and sepsis, other 8 cause-specific mortality rates showed a

Effects of epinephrine on hemodynamic changes during cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a neonatal piglet model.

BackgroundAsphyxia is the most common reason for newborns to fail to make a successful fetal-to-neonatal transition. There is currently a lack of data evaluating hemodynamic effects of epinephrine during neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.MethodsTwenty-four newborn piglets were exposed to asphyxia. Thereafter, positive pressure ventilation was commenced for 30 s, followed by chest compressions (CC). Piglets were randomized into three experimental groups: 3:1 compression:ventilation ratio; CC during sustained inflation (SI) at a rate of 90 CC per minute, or CC during SI at a rate of 120 CC

Identifying Genetic Susceptibility in Neonates With Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy: A Retrospective Case Series.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a clinical phenomenon that often results from perinatal asphyxia. To mitigate secondary neurologic injury, prompt initial assessment and diagnosis is needed to identify patients eligible for therapeutic hypothermia. However, occasionally neonates present with a clinical picture of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy without significant risk factors for perinatal asphyxia. We hypothesized that in patients with genetic abnormalities, the clinical manifestation of those abnormalities may overlap with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy criteria, potentially con

The effect of gestational age, low birth weight and parity on birth asphyxia among neonates in sub-Saharan Africa: systematic review and meta-analysis: 2021.

BACKGROUND: Despite simple and proven cost-effective measures were available to prevent birth asphyxia; studies suggested that there has been limited progress in preventing birth asphyxia even in healthy full-term neonates. In Sub-Saharan Africa, Inconsistency of magnitude of birth asphyxia and its association gestational age, Low birth Weight and Parity among different studies has been observed through time. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the Pooled magnitude of birth asphyxia and its association with gestational age, Low birth Weight and Parity among Neonates in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Causes of Neonatal Acute Renal Injury during Critical Illnesses.

The aim of the study was to assess acute kidney injury (AKI) and its contributing risk factors among neonates to reduce morbidity and mortality. The study included 310 neonates who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Serum creatinine (SCr) was elevated at admission, after 48 h, and before discharge or death. AKI was defined by either an acute rise in SCr of at least 0.3 mg/dL within 48 h or an increasing or persistently high level of SCr >1.5 mg/dL after 48-72 h of life. The patients who developed AKI were studied regarding the most common risk factors and outcomes. The p

Perinatal asphyxia and associated factors among neonates admitted to a specialized public hospital in South Central Ethiopia: A retrospective cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal asphyxia continues to be a significant clinical concern around the world as the consequences can be devastating. World Health Organization data indicates perinatal asphyxia is encountered amongst 6-10 newborns per 1000 live full-term birth, and the figures are higher for low and middle-income countries. Nevertheless, studies on the prevalence of asphyxia and the extent of the problem in poorly resourced southern Ethiopian regions are limited. This study aimed to determine the magnitude of perinatal asphyxia and its associated factors. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sec

The effects of fetal and perinatal asphyxia on neuronal cytokine levels and ceramide metabolism in adulthood.

In a rat model of global fetal and perinatal asphyxia, we investigated if asphyxia and long-lasting brain tolerance to asphyxia (preconditioning) are mediated by modifications in inflammatory cytokines and ceramide metabolism genes in prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and caudate-putamen at the age of 8months. Most significant changes were found in prefrontal cortex, with reduced LAG1 homolog ceramide synthase 1 expression after both types of asphyxia. Additionally, sphingosine kinase 1 was upregulated in those animals that experienced the combination of fetal and perinatal asphyxia (precondition

The Association of Birth Defects or Birth Asphyxia with the Risk of Mortality and Morbidity in Premature Infants.

Introduction: Preterm birth is a leading international health issue with morbidity and mortality risks. Premature infants frequently present with congenital anomalies or perinatal asphyxia, both of which contribute to prolonged hospitalization and greater need for respiratory support. This research investigates the effects of birth defects or asphyxia among premature infants on survival and recovery. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was carried out in an NICU in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. We examined 120 medical records of premature infants diagnosed with birth defects or birth asphyxia to d

Metabolomics in Context of Alpha-Ketoglutarate and Lactate in Neonates with Birth Asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal birth/perinatal asphyxia is a critical condition that can adversely affect many different bodily tissues, particularly the brain; depending on duration and severity of asphyxia, leading to difficulties and lifelong disabilities. These can be avoided by early detection of the biochemical derangements and prompt intervention. Serum alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG) and cord blood lactate have been found to be associated with birth asphyxia and may have potential to act as biomarkers for birth asphyxia. METHODS: Serum levels of α-KG and cord blood lactate were estimated in 34 birth

Neonatal therapeutic hypothermia in a regional swedish cohort: Adherence to guidelines, transport and outcomes.

AIM: Swedish guidelines for therapeutic hypothermia (TH) after perinatal asphyxia were established in 2007, following several randomised studies that demonstrated improved outcomes. We assessed the implementation of hypothermia treatment in a mid-Swedish region with a sizeable proportion of outborn infants. METHOD: A population-based TH cohort from 2007 to 2015 was scrutinised for adherence to national guidelines, interhospital transport, including the use of a cooling mattress made of phase change material for thermal management, and outcomes. RESULTS: Of 136 admitted infants, 99 (73 %) wer

Outcome of infants with 10 min Apgar scores of 0-1 in a low-resource setting.

BACKGROUND: In high-resource settings, postponing the interruption of cardiopulmonary resuscitation from 10 to 20 min after birth has been recently suggested, but data from low-resource settings are lacking. We investigated the outcome of newborns with Apgar scores of 0-1 at 10 min of resuscitative efforts in a low-resource setting. METHODS: This observational substudy from the NeoSupra trial included all 49 late preterm/full-term newborns with Apgar scores of 0-1 at 10 min of resuscitation. The study was carried out at Mulago National Referral Hospital (Kampala, Uganda) between May 2018 and
