Mother-son interactions in families of boys with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder with and without oppositional behavior.

Parenting responsiveness and over-reactivity were assessed among 25 mothers of 7-9-year-old sons with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and oppositional behavior (Oppositional Defiant, OD), 24 mothers of sons with ADHD only, and 38 mothers of nonproblem sons. Responsiveness was observed during mother-son play and clean-up interactions and over-reactivity was assessed using self-reports of parenting in discipline situations. Mothers of sons with ADHD/OD were less responsive and more over-reactive than mothers of nonproblem sons, and mothers of sons with ADHD only did not differ fr

Effects of pimozide on cognition in children with Tourette syndrome: interaction with comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Pimozide, a dopamine receptor antagonist, dopamine uptake inhibitor and L-type calcium channel blocker, is used in children suffering from Tourette syndrome (TS), but its effect on frequently comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is unknown. We have characterized the cognitive effects of pimozide and haloperidol in TS in relation to comorbid ADHD. Sixty-six consecutive outpatients with TS (DSM-III-R), ages 7-16, were randomly assigned to pimozide, haloperidol or medication-free clinical treatment and evaluated cognitively after 6 weeks. Continuous performance task (CPT) and

Overlaps and differences in the core symptoms of patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) show symptomatic overlaps. They both suffer from deficits in emotional regulation, are impulsive and have problems with their self-concept. Therefore, a precise diagnostic differentiation is of great importance. The aim of this study was to find symptom overlaps and differences in patients with ADHD and BPD. METHODS: 80 patients with ADHD, 55 patients with BPD and 55 healthy controls were examined regarding their ADHD and BPD symptoms and their degree of emot

The Presence of Childhood Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder May Be Associated With Interpersonal Sensitivity in Patients With Social Anxiety Disorder.

The goal of this study was to evaluate a possible association between childhood attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and interpersonal sensitivity in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). The study involved 125 adult outpatients with a primary diagnosis of SAD. To evaluate childhood ADHD, the ADHD module of the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SADS-PL) was used. Clinical and sociodemographic data were collected and clinical rating scales were completed. Mean total scores on the Interpersonal Sensitivity

Methylphenidate combined with aripiprazole in children and adolescents with bipolar disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a randomized crossover trial.

In clinical samples, juvenile bipolar disorder (JBPD) is frequently accompanied by co-morbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Clinical trials assessing combined psychopharmacological interventions in this population are scarce, and methylphenidate (MPH) may worsen manic symptoms. We conducted a randomized crossover trial with MPH and placebo (2 weeks each) combined with aripiprazole in children and adolescents (n = 16; 8-17 years old) with JBPD and ADHD who had a significant response in manic symptoms with aripiprazole but still presented clinically significant symptoms of ADHD

New and emerging therapeutics and molecular targets for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Attention‑deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is defined by persistent, impairing, and developmentally inappropriate patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity. ADHD is a multifactorial, partially heritable and polygenic disorder, involving multiple biological pathways and implicating many potential therapeutic targets. AREA COVERED: This opinion paper summarizes the evolution of ADHD diagnostic criteria and pharmacotherapy. The development of alpha‑2 adrenergic agonists, psychostimulants, and other dopamine/ norepinephrine transporter blockers, which all have sh

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Traits in Childhood and Physical Health in Midlife.

IMPORTANCE: Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with various health risks, most research has focused on children and young adults, leaving long-term physical health outcomes of ADHD traits underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between childhood ADHD traits and physical health outcomes in midlife and the role health risk factors play in this association. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included data from the nationally representative, population-based 1970 British Cohort Study. The cohort included people born in

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and snuff use prior to and early in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder linked to impulsivity and self-regulation difficulties. While the association between ADHD and nicotine dependence is well-established, less is known about the association with smokeless tobacco use, such as snuff. Given the adverse health effects of nicotine during pregnancy, this study examines whether women diagnosed with ADHD are more likely to use snuff prior to and early in pregnancy, and whether they persist in use between these periods. This study also explores the associations between ADHD and snuff use in the presence of common psychi

Association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and bruxism: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition characterized by symptoms of inattention, disorganization, and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Bruxism, defined as repetitive masticatory muscle activity involving clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or forceful mandibular movements, has been associated with several physiological and psychosocial factors. Considering the neurobehavioral profile of individuals with ADHD, a possible association between ADHD and bruxism has been hypothesized. AIMS: To determine whether an association exists b

Age at First Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis and Educational Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Early diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is often recommended, but it is unknown whether age at diagnosis is associated with educational outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To estimate whether age at ADHD diagnosis is associated with school performance, completed degrees, educational enrollment, and school dropout. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used national registry data for individuals born in Finland between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 1999, followed up until age 20 years. Individuals were born without a diagnosis of int

Can attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder be considered a form of cerebellar dysfunction?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogenous disorder, commonly described for presenting difficulties in sustained attention, response inhibition, and organizing goal-oriented behaviors. However, along with its traditionally described executive dysfunction, more than half of the children diagnosed with ADHD have been reported to show difficulties with gross and fine motor skills, albeit motor impairments in ADHD continue to be a neglected area of clinical attention. The rapidly growing field of the clinical cognitive neuroscience of the cerebellum has begun to relate cereb

CFTR acts as a potential therapeutic target for attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder.

The prevalence of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms among individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) is significantly elevated compared to the general population. Given that the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is the causative gene for cystic fibrosis, this raises the possibility of CFTR playing a crucial role in ADHD. In our study, three heterozygous missense variants (p.E217G, p.F316L, and p.T1220I) were detected in the CFTR gene, which co-segregate with ADHD in two consanguineous families, impacting a total of six family members. Through the util

Longitudinal patterns of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder children in Shanghai, China.

This study aimed to assess dynamic changes in emotional and behavioral problems among children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Shanghai, China. Using a longitudinal design, school-aged children with ADHD were enrolled and followed, with emotional and behavioral measures repeatedly assessed. Due to varying COVID-19 measures and changing epidemics, and no intervention was admitted, an event-based longitudinal design was adopted, using calendar time from the enrollment of the first participant. Data collection spanned various pandemic control stages, including the Shanghai

Nonstimulant Medications for Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children and Adolescents.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common pediatric psychiatric disorders and is frequently diagnosed and treated by pediatricians. Stimulant medications are the first-line treatment for ADHD but may not be a good fit for many patients due to side effects, inadequate treatment response, or family preference. Non-stimulant ADHD medications provide a useful alternative for patients that cannot tolerate stimulants, have an incomplete treatment response to stimulants, are at risk for stimulant diversion, or whose family prefers to avoid stimulants. Nonstimulant ADHD

Subclinical attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and unhealthy lifestyle behaviours.

BACKGROUND: Literature emphasises the importance of identifying and intervening in the adoption of unhealthy lifestyle behaviours (ULBs) during adolescence at an early stage, to mitigate their long-term detrimental effects. Among the possible associated factors contributing to ULBs, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been shown to play an important role. However, little is known about ADHD subclinical manifestations. AIMS: The present study aimed to bridge the gap in the literature and shed light on the relationship between subclinical ADHD and early adoption of ULBs during a

Practice Pearls for Stimulant Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Youth.

Over half of youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have co-occurring psychiatric or medical conditions that present treatment challenges. Stimulants are the most effective pharmacologic treatment of ADHD for preschoolers to adults but questions about safety with co-occurring conditions frequently arise. In addition, stigma surrounding diagnosis and treatment can negatively impact care. This manuscript presents evidence-based practice pearls to guide treatment decisions for youth with ADHD and common coexisting psychiatric and medical conditions. Recommendations address spe
