Effects of acute hypoxic exposure on multiple-object tracking ability of flight trainees.

INTRODUCTION: Acute hypoxic exposure can threaten flight safety by impairing the cognitive function of civil aviation pilots. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute moderate hypoxia on pilots' dynamic visual attention using a multiple-object tracking (MOT) paradigm. METHODS: Twenty-nine male flight trainees were recruited to perform the MOT task while exposed to a simulated hypoxic environment. Their reaction time and accuracy in each trial were recorded. RESULTS: When tracking four target disks, participants' accuracy was significantly lower under hypoxic conditions compared w…

Expanding the horizon of bio-naphtha beyond gasoline blend: property characterization and conversion opportunity assessment through techno-economic and life-cycle analyses.

Bio-naphtha, a common by-product of biorefineries, is expected to experience substantial growth in supply due to increasing demands for renewable diesel and synthetic aviation fuel (SAF). However, demand for bio-naphtha itself as a gasoline blendstock is limited because of the electrification of light-duty vehicles. Although various bio‑naphtha upgrading routes have been explored, a systematic techno-economic and life-cycle comparison across different bio‑naphtha types and upgrading pathways remains missing. This work integrated detailed processing modeling, techno-economic and life-cycle anal…

Acetazolamide alleviates motion sickness by inhibiting inner ear carbonic anhydrase 2 and reducing endolymph volume.

Motion sickness is common in aerospace, aviation and maritime operations, and travel by vehicles or ships. Existing preventive and therapeutic drugs for motion sickness induce central nervous system (CNS)-related side effects; therefore, there is an urgent need to find new anti-motion sickness targets and to develop novel drugs with reduced adverse effects. In this study, we found that rotational stimulation significantly upregulated carbonic anhydrase 2 (CA2) expression in the inner ears of guinea pigs and mice. Pretreatment with acetazolamide (AZ), an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase, effecti…

Intercomparison of in-well, depth profile and online soil gas measurements for estimating petroleum natural source zone depletion rates: Will in-well gas samples suffice?

Natural Source Zone Deletion (NSZD) is a viable long-term management option for sites impacted by petroleum hydrocarbon fuels. NSZD rate estimation methods for petroleum mass losses often use soil gas gradients of oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane or vapour concentrations through the vadose zone. Seeking greater efficiencies, we investigated if existing short-screened wells are reliable for representative sampling of soil gases in a vadose zone undergoing NSZD. At gasoline, diesel, aviation-gasoline, crude oil and background locations, we compared soil gas compositions from three methods: (i) mu…

Major products and their formation and transformation mechanism through degrading UDMH wastewater via DBD low temperature plasma.

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) is a liquid propellant widely used in aviation and aerospace. It produces a large amount of dimethyl hydrazine wastewater during long-term storage, testing, and reinjection. Traditional treatments produce numerous secondary contaminants such as residual high carcinogens, including N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and formaldehyde dimethylhydrazone (FDMH). In this paper, the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) low temperature plasma technology is used to degrade the dimethyl hydrazine wastewater. Aiming at the problem of secondary pollutants in the degradation…

Emergency Manuals Improved Novice Physician Performance During Simulated ICU Emergencies.

BACKGROUND: Emergency manuals, which are safety essentials in non-medical high-reliability organizations (e.g., aviation), have recently gained acceptance in critical medical environments. Of the existing emergency manuals in anesthesiology, most are geared towards intraoperative settings. Additionally, most evidence supporting their efficacy focuses on the study of physicians with at least some meaningful experience as a physician. Our aim was to evaluate whether an emergency manual would improve the performance of novice physicians (post-graduate year [PGY] 1 or first year resident) in manag…

A comparison of some effects of three antimotion sickness drugs on nystagmic responses to angular accelerations and to optokinetic stimuli.

While the basic efficacy of antimotion sickness drugs is rooted in the reduction of motion sickness symptoms, adverse side effects are important practical considerations of their usage in aviation. This study examined the influence of three established antimotion sickness drugs on nystagmic eye movement responses to angular acceleration (whole-body movement) with vision either permitted or denied, and to optokinetic stimulation (visual field movement). Dimenhydrinate and promethazine hydrochloride, particularly at higher dose levels, reduced optokinetic nystagmus, thereby making less accurate …

Rough Auditory Alarms Mitigate Inattentional Deafness During Piloting-Like Task.

ObjectiveTo assess the efficiency of rough auditory alarms in capturing attention during a piloting-like task under high mental workload that may induce inattentional deafness.BackgroundUnder high mental workload and stress, pilots may experience inattentional deafness, leading them to miss critical auditory warnings. This results from early inhibition of the primary auditory cortex by prefrontal areas, shifting auditory processing oscillations from gamma to alpha frequencies. Recent studies suggest that roughness-an auditory perceptual feature of natural alarm signals generated by amplitude-m

Hot Air Balloon: An Unusual Cause of Multicasualty Trauma Incident.

Hot air balloon incidents are few and far between compared with the total number of flights. Nevertheless, hot air balloon incidents may produce severe trauma involving several patients and are linked to significant mortality. The prehospital management of injured patients starts after having secured potential surrounding dangers, such as fire or explosion. In the context of a rescue by helicopter, close attention must be paid to potential obstacles, like trees or electrical wires, and the risk of aspiration of the balloon envelope into the rotor. Patients involved in such incidents are often

Timing of surgery in thoracolumbar trauma: is early intervention safe?

The understanding of the optimal surgical timing for stabilization in thoracolumbar fractures is severely limited. Thoracolumbar spine fractures can be devastating injuries and are often associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The role of early surgical stabilization (within 48-72 hours of injury) as a vehicle to improve outcomes in these patients has generated significant interest. Goals of early stabilization include improved neurological recovery, faster pulmonary recovery, improved pain control, and decreased health care costs. Opponents cite the potential for increased bleedi
