Human Vocal Fold Tissue Modifications Related to Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The vocal fold tissue modifications and related dysphonia caused by laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD) remain a controversial topic in laryngology. Investigation of human vocal fold tissue exposed to reflux content can provide valuable insights. This systematic review aimed to summarize the current knowledge about LPRD-induced human vocal fold tissue modifications to better understand LPRD pathophysiology and LPRD-related voice disorders. METHODS: A PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science database search was carried out by two investigators for studies investigating human laryngea

A retrospective analysis of hepatic injury in horses with proximal enteritis (1984-2002).

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that horses with proximal enteritis (PE) are predisposed to hepatic injury. We also determined whether the presence of liver injury in horses with PE was associated with other clinicopathologic abnormalities or affected outcome. The medical records of all horses admitted for evaluation of colic and gastric reflux between 1984 and 2002 were reviewed. Horses were considered to have PE if the diagnosis was made at surgery or postmortem examination or if they had clinical findings consistent with PE. Horses with a small intestinal strangulating

Association Between Cholecystectomy and Gastroesophageal Inflammatory Findings After Sleeve Gastrectomy: Endoscopic and Metabolic Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is associated with the development or worsening of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Cholecystectomy following SG - the standard treatment for cholelithiasis resulting from rapid weight loss - may influence GERD pathophysiology by enhancing enterohepatic bile circulation and increasing alkaline reflux. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the longitudinal development of endoscopic and histologic esophageal and gastric mucosal findings, alongside systemic metabolic profiles, across defined pre- and post-cholecystectomy intervals in individuals previously manage

Vulnerability to acid reflux of the airway epithelium in severe asthma.

BACKGROUND: Severe asthma is associated with multiple comorbidities, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), which can contribute to exacerbation frequency and poor quality of life. Since epithelial dysfunction is an important feature in asthma, we hypothesised that in severe asthma the bronchial epithelium is more susceptible to the effects of acid reflux. METHODS: We developed an in vitro model of GORD using differentiated bronchial epithelial cells (BECs) from normal or severe asthmatic donors exposed to a combination of pepsin, acid pH and bile acids using a multiple challenge

Telomere length of gallbladder epithelium is shortened in patients with congenital biliary dilatation: measurement by quantitative fluorescence in situ hybridization.

BACKGROUND: Congenital biliary dilatation (CBD) is a congenital malformation involving both dilatation of the extrahepatic bile duct and pancreaticobiliary maljunction. Persistent reflux of pancreatic juice injures the biliary tract mucosa, resulting in chronic inflammation and higher rates of carcinogenesis in the biliary tract, including the gallbladder. Telomeres are repetitive DNA sequences located at the ends of chromosomes. Chromosomal instability due to telomere dysfunction plays an important role in the carcinogenesis of many organs. This study was performed to determine whether excess

Current status of function-preserving surgery for gastric cancer.

Recent advances in diagnostic techniques have allowed the diagnosis of gastric cancer (GC) at an early stage. Due to the low incidence of lymph node metastasis and favorable prognosis in early GC, function-preserving surgery which improves postoperative quality of life may be possible. Pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG) is one such function-preserving procedure, which is expected to offer advantages with regards to dumping syndrome, bile reflux gastritis, and the frequency of flatus, although PPG may induce delayed gastric emptying. Proximal gastrectomy (PG) is another function-preserving pr…

DNA damage levels are raised in Barrett's oesophageal mucosa relative to the squamous epithelium of the oesophagus.

Barrett's oesophagus (BE) is a pre-malignant metaplastic tissue predisposing to oesophageal adenocarcinoma (EC), and gastro-oesophageal reflux is a risk factor for both conditions. Reflux of acid and bile can cause mucosal injury and initiate chronic inflammation. These processes can induce DNA damage, possibly via an oxidative stress mechanism, thus increasing the likelihood of progression from Barrett's metaplasia to dysplasia and finally carcinoma. The comet assay was optimized for the detection of DNA damage (strand breaks and alkali-labile sites) in oesophageal biopsies, including incorpo

Postoperative evaluation of pylorus-preserving procedures compared with conventional distal gastrectomy for early gastric cancer.

We evaluated postoperative function in 98 patients who underwent surgery for early gastric cancer between 1995 and 1998 to compare the resul … and PPG than after B-I. There was also less evidence of gastritis after EMR, Local, and PPG, and of bile reflux after EMR, Local, and PPG, than after B-I. These findings indicate that pylorus-preserving procedures may result in a better postoperative quality of life for selected patients with early gastric cancer.

WITHDRAWN: Medical treatments for the maintenance therapy of reflux oesophagitis and endoscopic negative reflux disease.

BACKGROUND: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) - reflux of stomach contents +/- bile into the oesophagus causing symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux - is a common relapsing and remitting disease which often requires long-term maintenance therapy. Patients with GORD may have oesophagitis (inflammation of the oesophagus) or a normal endoscopy (endoscopy negative reflux disease or ENRD). OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of continuous maintenance therapy in adults with GORD (both ENRD and healed oesophagitis). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Tri

Pancreaticobiliary Maljunctions in European Patients with Bile Duct Cysts: Results of the Multicenter Study of the French Surgical Association (AFC).

BACKGROUND: Pancreaticobiliary maljunctions (PBMs) are congenital anomalies of the junction between pancreatic and bile ducts, frequently associated with bile duct cyst (BDC). BDC is congenital biliary tree diseases that are characterized by distinctive dilatation types of the extra- and/or intrahepatic bile ducts. Todani's types I and IVa, in which dilatation involves principally the main bile duct, are the most frequent. PBM induces pancreatic juice reflux into the biliary tract that is supposed to be one of the main factors of biliary cancer degeneration, although the diagnostic criteria of

Cancers of the pancreas and biliary tract: epidemiological considerations.

The epidemiological patterns for pancreatic and biliary cancers reveal more differences than similarities. Pancreatic carcinoma is common in western countries, although 2 Polynesian groups (New Zealand Maoris and native Hawaiians) have the highest rates internationally. In the United States the disease is rising in frequency, predominating in males and in blacks. The rates are elevated in urban areas, but geographic analysis uncovered no clustering of contiguous counties except in southern Louisiana. The origin of pancreatic cancer is obsure, but a twofold increased risk has been documented fo
