Biotic and abiotic processes contribute to successful anaerobic degradation of cyanide by UASB reactor biomass treating brewery waste water.

In contrast to the general aerobic detoxification of industrial effluents containing cyanide, anaerobic cyanide degradation is not well understood, including the microbial communities involved. To address this knowledge gap, this study measured anaerobic cyanide degradation and the rearrangements in bacterial and archaeal microbial communities in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor biomass treating brewery waste water using bio-methane potential assays, molecular profiling, sequencing and microarray approaches. Successful biogas formation and cyanide removal without inhibition we…

Pilot-scale experience with biological nutrient removal and biomass yield reduction in a liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed bioreactor.

A pilot-scale liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed (LSCFB) bioreactor was developed at the Adelaide Pollution Control Plant, London, Ontario, Canada, to study its commercial viability for biological nutrient removal. Lava rock particles of 600 microm were used as a biomass carrier media. The LSCFB removed approximately 90% organic, 80% nitrogen, and 70% phosphorus at loading rates of 4.12 kg COD/m3 x d, 0.26 kg N/m3 x d, and 0.052 kg P/m3 x d, and an empty bed contact time of 1.5 hours. Effluent characterized by < 1.0 mg NH4-N/L, < 5.0 mg NO3-N/ L, < 1.0 mg PO4-P/L, < 10 mg TN/L, < 10 mg SBO…

Effectiveness of an alternating aerobic, anoxic/anaerobic strategy for maintaining biomass activity of BNR sludge during long-term starvation.

The effectiveness of an aerobic, anoxic/anaerobic strategy for maintaining the activity of activated sludge performing biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal during long-term starvation is investigated. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating abattoir wastewater and achieving high-levels (>95%) of nitrogen, phosphorus and COD removal was used. The reactor was put twice into a so-called "sleeping mode" for a period of 5-6 weeks when the abattoir, where the wastewater was sourced, was closed down for annual maintenance. The "sleeping mode" operation consisted of 15 min aeration i

Global partitioning of NOx sources using satellite observations: relative roles of fossil fuel combustion, biomass burning and soil emissions.

We use space-based observations of NO2 columns from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) to derive monthly top-down NOx emissions for 2000 via inverse modeling with the GEOS-CHEM chemical transport model. Top-down NOx sources are partitioned among fuel combustion (fossil fuel and biofuel), biomass burning and soils by exploiting the spatio-temporal distribution of remotely sensed fires and a priori information on the location of regions dominated by fuel combustion. The top-down inventory is combined with an a priori inventory to obtain an optimized a posteriori estimate of the relati…

The effect of lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment by-products on the fermentation activity of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, measured using indices of toxic stress.

The use of lignocellulosic biomass as a renewable raw material for the production of cellulosic ethanol requires pretreatment. Unfortunately, this process can generate numerous by-products that have a toxic effect on yeasts. Understanding the response of yeast is crucial if measures are to be developed that allow adaptation under multifactorial stress conditions. The study objective was to determine the effect that inhibitors in the form of by-products of lignocellulose pretreatment have on yeast fermentation activity. The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae was fermented in liquid media containing…

Assembly of a self-powered electrochemical sensor with a biomass-derived bioanode and an abiotic cathode based on an enzyme inhibition detection strategy.

Herein, a self-powered biosensor (SPB) was constructed using a biomass-derived bioanode and a Zn/Fe zeolitic imidazole framework (Zn/Fe-ZIF) derived-abiotic cathode. Specifically, a natural plant biomass (Juncus effuses) was carbonized to prepare a three-dimensional hierarchical carbon scaffold named as CJE, on which carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were grown under the catalysis of Co, Ni, and Co/Ni catalysts, respectively. The length, diameter and coverage of CNTs on CJE were regulated via adjusting the type and mass proportion of the metal catalysts. The optimum signal output (3.61 μW cm-2) is achie…

Evaluating hydrogel efficacy on biomass and survival of Casuarina equisetifolia L. and Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. ex R. Br. seedlings.

Dryland afforestation in Ethiopia is frequently hindered by high seedling mortality during drought, leading to the proposal of hydrogels as a mitigation tool. However, the physiological trade-offs between biomass gain and survival longevity at low dosages remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the efficacy of a 3.5 g/pot application of Stockosorb® 400 K on the growth and survival of Casuarina equisetifolia and Grevillea robusta using a 2 × 2 factorial Randomized Complete Block Design. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a sandy loam substrate (bulk density 1.31 g/cm³; or…

Design of experiments based optimization of pH and carbon dioxide to hydrogen ratio for enhanced acetate and biomass formation by Clostridium ljungdahlii.

In gas fermentation processes, pH value, and gas composition represent key parameters determining efficiency and product formation. This study focuses on optimizing these cultivation parameters using a multivariate framework to increase biomass and acetate formation of fermentations using the model acetogen Clostridium ljungdahlii and carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen (H2) as sole gaseous substrates. A design of experiments (DoE) approach with the two main influencing factors spanning a design space of pH 5.0-6.5 and CO2:H2 of 1:1-1:3 was applied to build a predictive regression model. This mo…

Optimization of pyrolysis parameters for enhanced biochar production from agricultural biomass: A study on energy efficiency and carbon sequestration potential.

Biomass pyrolysis presents an attractive opportunity for sustainable energy generation while also sequestering carbon, but efforts to systematically optimize it in consideration of feedstock variability, process parameters, and energy efficiency are still in their infancy. This research assesses the pyrolysis characteristics of five types of agricultural wastes, including rice husk, corn stalk, palm kernel shell, coconut shell, and wheat straw, at a fixed-bed reactor, with temperature (300 to 700 °C), heating rate (5-20 °C/min), and residence time (30 to 120 min). All biomass materials underwe…

Metal oxides-based catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomasses for bio-oil development: a comparative assessment on process optimization and characterization.

This study investigated the conventional fixed-bed catalytic pyrolysis using metal oxides (CaO, Fe₂O₃, and TiO₂) to enhance bio-oil yield from three lignocellulosic biomasses: safflower press cake (SPC), coconut press cake (CPC), and coconut shell (CS). The primary characterization, using ultimate, proximate, and compositional analyses, as well as TGA-DTG-DSC, was carried out in the experiment. SPC biomass had a high hemicellulose content (50.8 ± 0.11%), which is suited for bio-oil applications. An initial non-catalytic pyrolysis experiment was conducted at 550 °C with a heating rate of 25 °C/…

A bimetallic (Cu-Zn) doping platform for enhancement of CO2 capture and separation by a cost-effective biomass-based activated carbon.

This study presents an efficient method for CO2 capture and separation using low-cost corncob-based activated carbon/metal nanoparticles (MNPs/AC) composites. Initially, the optimization of AC synthesis was conducted by varying activating agent/precursor ratios and activation temperature. Subsequently, the highly porous AC was modified using a polyol method with a single and binary mixture of Cu2+ and Zn2+ metals. The raw AC, Cu/AC, Zn/AC, and Cu-Zn/AC composites were extensively characterized through BET, FESEM-EDX, FT-IR, TGA, and Boehm's titration analyses. Gas adsorption results revealed t

Comparative assessment of biomass, carbon storage and soil CO2 fluxes in degraded mangroves in the major estuarine gradients of the sundarban, India.

Mangroves provide critical ecosystem services, including coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. However, global degradation reduces their carbon sequestration capacity and increases carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Therefore, to quantify the biomass, carbon storage potential of mangrove species, soil CO2 fluxes, and total carbon stock in the degraded mangrove systems of Sundarban, India, nine different sites were selected based on degradation status and estuarine types. Sites were categorized based on proximity to human habitation: very close (<500 m), close (5…

Assessment of interfering/synergistic effects in the adsorption between polar and non-polar VOCs on a commercial biomass-based microporous carbon.

This research has been carried out to investigate unique relationships in adsorption behavior between polar and non-polar volatile organic compounds (VOCs: formaldehyde (FA) versus toluene) using commercial macadamia nutshell (MNS)-based microporous activated carbon (i.e., Procarb-900: namely, P900). The breakthrough (BT) volume, adsorption capacity, and partition coefficient of P900 are estimated for 100 ppm FA as a single component and as a binary phase with 100 ppm toluene. The contrasting features of adsorption (such as interfering/synergistic relationships) for VOC mixtures with different

Evidence for cytotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction in human lung cells exposed to biomass burning aerosol constituents: Levoglucosan and 4-nitrocatechol.

Biomass burning (BB) emissions are one of the largest sources of carbonaceous aerosol, posing a significant risk as an airway irritant. Important BB markers include wood pyrolysis emissions, such as levoglucosan (LG) that is an anhydrous sugar bearing a six-carbon ring structure (i.e., 1,6-anhydro-β-D-glucopyranose). Atmospheric chemical aging of BB-derived aerosol (BBA) in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) can yield nitro-aromatic compounds, including 4-nitrocatechol (4NC). There is building evidence that NOx-mediated chemical aging of BBA poses a more serious exposure effect than primary…
