Zoonotic myiasis in Egypt: with reference to nosocomial or hospital-acquired myiasis.

The most important insects from medical point of view are the blood suckers or the insect- borne diseases. Still others, almost non-blood>suckers, but may attack man and animal to depos it their eggs or larvae of myiasis producing flies in skin, nose, eye, lung, ear, anus, vagina, and oral cavity as well as accidental gastrointestinal ones causing pathogenic condition known as myiasis causing different pathogenic conditions. Nosocomial myiasis must be noted carefully, especially in case of hospitalized patients. Myiasis is a real welfare problem and many myiasis . producers are zoonotic parasi

Tick infestation and molecular detection of causative agents of anaplasmosis in small ruminants from eastern Tanzania.

Anaplasma ovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are tick-borne pathogens that cause significant economic loss in small ruminants. Despite having larger population of small ruminants, Tanzania has limited information about the presence and distribution of these bacteria and their vectors. This study investigated ticks’ prevalence, control methods, and infection rates of A. ovis and A. phagocytophilum in small ruminants from Eastern Tanzania. Out of 223 animals sampled, 87.6% were infested by ticks, and the prevalence did not vary significantly among sheep (86.9%, n = 53) and goats (90.1%, n = 146)

Cross-Sectional Analysis of Serologic Response to Arthropod-Borne and Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses in Ghanaian Livestock Herders.

Zoonotic diseases account for more than 60% of emerging infectious diseases, and they are the leading cause of pandemics. As humans and livestock become increasingly transient and the environment and climate change, disease vectors expand into previously untouched geographical regions, spreading pathogens. In this study, we assessed the seroprevalence of arthropod-borne and hemorrhagic fever viruses of similar clinical presentation and endemicity in high-risk populations in Ghana (animal handlers). Using a microneutralization assay, we compared total IgG prevalence with live virus neutralizing

Making sense of flavivirus non-strctural protein 1 in innate immune evasion and inducing tissue-specific damage.

Flaviviruses include medically important mosquito-borne pathogens, such as Zika virus (ZIKV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), dengue virus (DENV) and West Nile virus (WNV), that cause hundreds of millions of infections each year. Currently, there are no approved effect therapies against mosquito-borne flaviviruses. The flaviviruses encoded nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) is a secreted glycoprotein widely involved in viral replication, immune evasion, and directly causing tissue-specific damage during flaviviruses infection. Upon viral infection of host cell, NS1 can be found in multiple oligo

Apicomplexans in small mammals from Chile, with the first report of the Babesia microti group in South American rodents.

Small mammals play an essential role as disseminators of pathogens because they reach high population densities and have ubiquitous distributions. In the Northern Hemisphere rodents are well recognized as reservoirs for tick-borne bacteria of the Anaplasmataceae family and also apicomplexan protozoans. In contrast, South American rodents hosting these microorganisms have been rarely identified. In this study, we collected blood from rodents and marsupials in northern Chile and screened for Anaplasmataceae bacteria and apicomplexan protozoa. Overall, 14.7% of the samples were positive for Babes

Seroprevalence of tick-borne infections in military working dogs in the Republic of Korea.

In this study we endeavored to determine the seroprevalence of tick-borne infections in the military working dog (MWD) population in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Our sample population consisted of 182 serum samples from MWDs for 3 different years (1996, 2002, and 2007). In addition, 63 whole blood samples from 2007 were available for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Serum samples were evaluated by a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for Ehrlichia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and by ELISA only for Borrelia burgdorferi. Globalization and blood safety.

Globalization may be viewed as the growing interdependence of countries worldwide through the increasing volume and variety of cross-border transactions in goods and services, and also through the more rapid and widespread diffusion of technology. Globalization is not just an economic phenomenon, although it is frequently described as such, but includes commerce, disease and travel, and immigration, and as such it affects blood safety and supply in various ways. The relatively short travel times offered by modern aviation can result in the rapid spread of blood-borne pathogens before measures …

Rickettsia typhi, Bartonella henselae, and related zoonotic agents in fleas from domestic cats (Felis catus) from the Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

BACKGROUND: Flea-borne rickettsiosis and bartonellosis are emerging diseases in humans and animals. There is increasing concern for the emergence of Rickettsia typhi (agent of murine typhus or flea-borne typhus) in humans of southern USA, for which cats are key reservoirs and cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) serve as the vector. Similarly, multiple species of Bartonella have cats as natural hosts and fleas as vectors, leading to varied disease outcomes in humans, including cat scratch disease and neurobartonellosis. METHODS: To investigate the ecology of Rickettsia and Bartonella pathogens,

Molecular analysis of vector-borne pathogens in Eurasian badgers (Meles meles) from continental Europe.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) are increasing in significance in veterinary medicine and public health settings, with wildlife playing a potentially crucial role in their transmission. Eurasian badgers (Meles meles) are widely distributed across Europe. However, information currently available on the prevalence of VBPs in badgers is limited. The objective of the current study was to investigate the occurrence of Anaplasmataceae, Bartonella spp., Mycoplasma spp., Rickettsia spp., Piroplasmida, Trypanosomatida and Filarioidea in badgers and subsequently, based on the results, assess t

Vector-borne pathogens of zoonotic concern in hunting dogs of southern Italy.

Dogs are commonly exposed to vector-borne pathogens (VBPs), yet few data are available on hunting dogs, which are often at high risk of infection due to their involvement in field activities. To investigate the occurrence of VBPs and evaluate the relative performance of different diagnostic tools, blood and serum samples were collected from hunting dogs (n = 1,433) in rural areas of southern Italy. All samples were tested by Knott's technique for filarioids, serologically (SNAP® 4Dx® Plus) for Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Dirofilaria immitis and Ehrlichia spp. and molecular

Occurrence of tick-transmitted pathogens in dogs in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Canine babesiosis caused by Babesia rossi, transmitted by Haemaphysalis elliptica in South Africa, has also been reported from Nigeria. Although H. leachi (sensu lato) is widespread in sub-Saharan Africa, published literature on the occurrence of canine babesiosis is meagre. It has been postulated that the genotype of Babesia rossi Erythrocyte Membrane Antigen 1 (BrEMA1) may be linked to virulence of the specific isolate. The primary objective of this study was to detect and characterise tick-borne pathogens in dogs presented to a veterinary hospital using molecular techniques. In

Molecular detection of Rickettsia spp., Borrelia spp., Bartonella spp. and Yersinia pestis in ectoparasites of endemic and domestic animals in southwest Madagascar.

Little is known about the presence of vector-borne bacteria in southwest Madagascar. Anthropogenic alteration of natural habitats represents an important driver for the emergence of new diseases. Especially the involvement of livestock and the involuntary maintaining of invasive synanthropic animals (particularly rats) facilitate disease transmission from wildlife to humans and associated animals and vice versa. The dissemination or acquisition of ectoparasites is most likely in regions where human/wildlife contact is increasing. Little is known about the presence of vector-borne bacteria in s

Canine vector-borne protozoa: Molecular and serological investigation for Leishmania spp., Trypanosoma spp., Babesia spp., and Hepatozoon spp. in dogs from Northern Algeria.

Dogs are competent reservoirs/hosts of several protozoan pathogens transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods. Throughout their long history of domestication, they have served as a link for the exchange of parasites among livestock, wildlife, and humans and therefore remain an important source of emerging and re-emerging diseases. In Algeria, while canine leishmaniosis (CanL) is well known to be endemic, no data are available on other vector-borne protozoans. Here, we investigate the occurrence and diversity of trypanosomes, piroplasms and Hepatozoon spp. and update the epidemiological status of
