Computed tomography of the spine: an update and review.

Computed tomography (CT) has proven to be an important diagnostic imaging technique for the evaluation of a variety of spinal disorders. The method is useful for identifying and characterizing acute fractures in traumatized patients and can accurately quantify spinal canal encroachment. Intervertebral disc disease and facet joint osteoarthritis are readily demonstrated by CT in both the cervical and lumbar regions. The technique can reliably distinguish between infection and neoplastic disease in the spine and is helpful for the guidance of percutaneous biopsy. A variety of congenital and deve

Benign bone tumours of tibial tuberosity clinically mimicking Osgood-Schlatter disease: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is a traction apophysitis of the tibial tubercle and a common cause of anterior knee pain in growing adolescents. A variety of benign neoplasms can also cause bony prominence over the tibial tubercle in adolescents that might clinically imitate OSD. Therefore, the differential diagnosis of tumours mimicking OSD is critical and considered the primary goal of this study. METHODS: Eleven patients who were referred to our orthopaedic oncology department with clinical suspicions of OSD and obscure radiographic presentation were identified. The final dia

Chiari type I malformation caused by craniometaphyseal dysplasia.

Craniometaphyseal dysplasia is a rare genetic condition characterized by progressive thickening of bones in the skull and metaphyseal abnormalities in the long bones. This disorder often causes progressively symptomatic cranial nerve compression, but in rare cases foramen magnum stenosis may lead to quadriplegia. Chiari I malformation with craniometaphyseal dysplasia is extremely rare. The authors report on a 25-year-old woman with myelopathy due to Chiari I malformation along with craniometaphyseal dysplasia. There are only four previous case reports of this condition. The authors present her

Treatment of infantile Blount disease with lateral tension band plating.

BACKGROUND: Growth manipulation has had increasing popularity in the treatment of lower extremity angular deformities in children. This paper discusses the use of growth manipulation for the treatment of infantile Blount disease as an alternative to proximal tibial osteotomy. METHODS: A retrospective chart and radiographic review was carried out for 12 children (18 limbs) who had treatment of infantile Blount disease with application of lateral proximal tibial tension band plates. Some children also had distal femoral lateral plates applied. Serial radiographs were measured to show response t

Maxillary growth following total septal resection in correction of orbital hypertelorism.

A rapid survey of eight cases with orbital hypertelorism did not reveal any evident change in maxillary displacement during facial growth following resection of nasal septum and medial displacement of orbital cavities. Accurate analysis of four cases according to the Ricketts long-term growth forecast showed a reduction of growth in the region of anterior nasal spine and only in the posteroanterior direction. This is not necessarily due to the absence of nasal septum. These patients have such severe deformities and the surgical procedure is so extensive that many factors can be responsible for

Clinical variation in dyschondrosteosis. A report on 13 individuals in 8 families.

Thirteen patients with dyschondrosteosis from eight families are reviewed and their clinical and radiographic variation noted. Inheritance is likely to be autosomal dominant but with only 50 per cent penetrance. Stature was moderately reduced, due to shortening of the bones of the leg. Radio-ulnar shortening could either involve both bones equally or the radius predominantly, in which case a typical Madelung deformity was seen. Tibio-fibular disproportion was present in half the patients, two of them having severe deformity associated with tibia varum and a long fibula. The treatment of one of

[Pathogenesis of skeletal radiation injuries to the proximal portion of the pelvic extremity in white rat embryos].

The mechanisms forming certain anomalies in the pelvic proximal part in the offspring of white rats subjected to x-ray radiation on the 12th and 13th days of gestation have been analysed. Serial sections of the embryos performed at various time after radiation and electron microscopic investigations have demonstrated that radiation lesions in the locomotor apparatus are of different pathogenesis. Defects in the femoral and pelvic bones, their fusion in the coxofemoral joint are anomalies resulted from destruction of some mesenchymal cells in the proximal part of the pelvic bud. Unwarranted intrusion of odontogenic cyst into the maxillary antrum.

During the early growth phase, every individual is involved in a prolonged series of developmental processes in the maxillofacial region. Formation of cysts associated with such three-dimensional growth of the maxillofacial skeleton as well as deciduous and permanent tooth development. The origin of cystic jaw lesions may be odontogenic or non-odontogenic, developmental, or inflammatory and they are epithelial-lined or non-epithelial-lined cysts in nature. These cysts are considered to be aggressive cysts when they tend to grow rapidly and can cause significant damage to the surrounding bone a

Impact of Somatic Development and Course of Osteogenesis Imperfecta on FGF23 Levels in Children.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare bone dysplasia that occurs with a frequency of 1/15,000-20,000 live births. It is characterized by increased susceptibility of bone fractures, skeletal deformities, low stature, and low bone mass. It results in impaired production of type I collagen. About 90% of people with OI have heterozygous mutations in the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a protein involved in the regulation of phosphate and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 metabolism on a negative feedback basis. FGF23 is secreted by osteocytes in response to increased serum

Toxicity mechanisms regulating bone differentiation and development defects following abnormal expressions of miR-30c targeted by triclosan in zebrafish.

As a ubiquitous environmental estrogen-disrupting chemical, triclosan (TCS) can induce severe osteotoxicity; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain uncertain. Herein, we evaluated the toxic effects of TCS on the development of cartilage and osteogenesis in 5-dpf zebrafish. Under TCS exposure from 62.5 to 250 μg/L, several osteodevelopmental malformations were observed, such as defect of craniofacial cartilage, pharyngeal arch cartilage dysplasia, and impairments on skeletal mineralization. Further, the morphology of mature chondrocytes became swollen and deformed, their number dec

Zebrafish endochondral growth zones as they relate to human bone size, shape and disease.

Research on the genetic mechanisms underlying human skeletal development and disease have largely relied on studies in mice. However, recently the zebrafish has emerged as a popular model for skeletal research. Despite anatomical differences such as a lack of long bones in their limbs and no hematopoietic bone marrow, both the cell types in cartilage and bone as well as the genetic pathways that regulate their development are remarkably conserved between teleost fish and humans. Here we review recent studies that highlight this conservation, focusing specifically on the cartilaginous growth zo

Vestibular Aqueduct Hypoplasia Identifies Semicircular Canal Dehiscence Patients Who Progress to Meniere's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Semicircular canal dehiscence (SCD) and vestibular aqueduct (VA) hypoplasia are developmental anomalies associated with distinct inner ear syndromes-SCD syndrome and Meniere's disease (MD). Our previous work found frequent SCD in MD patients with VA hypoplasia, suggesting a shared developmental origin. To further explore this association, we adopted a reciprocal approach by assessing VA hypoplasia prevalence in patients diagnosed with SCD. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: A total of 219 ears from 173 patients (mean age 53.5 ye

Cystic lymphangioma of the spleen mimicking hydatid disease.

Cystic lymphangioma is a very rare condition generally accepted to be the result of a developmental malformation of the lymphatic system. Usually seen in children, it occurs infrequently in adults. The neck (75%) and axillary regions (20%) are the most common locations of lymphangioma, but it can occur in the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, mesentery, omentum, colon, pelvis, groin, bone, skin, scrotum, and spleen. We present a cystic lymphangioma of the spleen with emphasis on its rarity in this site and problems of differential diagnosis with hydatid disease.
