The purpose of this cadaveric study was to compare the biomechanical properties of dual nonlocked plating and single-locked plating using matched pairs of isolated fibula specimens. Fractures were simulated in 10 matched pairs of isolated cadaveric fibulae and plated with a single lateral locking plate for right-sided specimens, or with a one-third tubular plate and a 7-hole 2.4-mm minifragment adaption plate for left-sided specimens. An external rotation torque was applied at a rate of 1°/second, and torque at 10° was measured. Each fibula specimen was evaluated using a micro computed tomogra

PURPOSE: Cysts and other intrabony lesions can grow asymptomatic until being diagnosed by occasionally done radiologic examination. Missing tooth and malposition of adjacent teeth should induce clinicians to perform X-Ray diagnostic.
METHODS: A 37-year-old, male patient was admitted with a hopeless tooth 36, to be extracted and replaced with an implant. Clinical examination revealed also missing one of lower incisors and malposition of remaining lower incisors. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed horizontally impacted lower incisor surrounded by bone defect -15 × 20 × 8 mm with the bone th

Locking Compression Plate (LCP) has the advantageous feature that screws can be locked in the plate leaving an angular stable construct. There is no need to have contact between the plate and the bone to achieve stability resulting from friction of the plate-bone-construct. Therefore the plate does not need to be contoured exactly to the bone and the healing bone's periosteal blood supply is not affected. The LCP is used as a bridging plate to gain relative stability in multi-fragmentary, diaphyseal or metaphyseal fractures. Depending on the fracture, the combination hole can also allow the LC

Understanding bone surface curvatures is crucial for the advancement of bone material design, as these curvatures play a significant role in the mechanical behavior and functionality of bone structures. Previous studies have demonstrated that bone surface curvature distributions could be used to characterize bone geometry and have been proposed as key parameters for biomimetic microstructure design and optimization. However, understanding of how bone surface curvature distributions correlate with bone microstructure and mechanical properties remains limited. This study hypothesized that bone s

BACKGROUND: Locked plating of femur fractures is associated with secondary peri-implant fractures which may be a result of stress concentrations at the proximal plate end region. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the strength of healed femoral bone-locking-compression-plate constructs can be increased by modifying the screw configurations and plate length to minimize the risks of peri-implant femur fractures.
METHODS: The detached shaft of a variable angle condylar locking compression plate (VA-LCP Condylar Plate; Johnson & Johnson MedTech) was fixed to the proximal two-third o

PURPOSE: This computer-based study used finite element analysis (FEA) to assess whether rigid fixation by resorbable polymer plates and screws can provide the required stiffness and strength for a typical mandibular angle fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two separate 3-dimensional FEA models of the mandible were generated using 8-noded hexahedral elements. The jaw segments in 1 model were fixed with titanium plates and screws as those in common use today. The jaw segments in the other model were fixed with resorbable polymer plates and screws as used in a developmental product currently in tr

Traditional tower cranes cannot meet the sustainable development goals as they use the cast-in-place concrete foundation, with large size, long construction period, and demolition after construction, resulting in waste of resources and high costs. This paper proposes a bolt-connected prefabricated cross-shaped I-steel tower crane foundation. It offers significant advantages in terms of convenient connection, low amortization cost and recyclability. The split connection point of the foundation is determined through the force analysis of the I-steel. With the ratio of the fixed cross-sectional a

Despite abundant theoretical investigations on the dynamic behavior of functionally graded (FG) structures, the study on frequency analysis of FG bio-composite structures is limited. FG bio-composite materials due to their biocompatibility potentials and good material properties can be applied in biomedical applications, especially dental implants. In this investigation, a natural frequency response of the FG bio-composite plate is analyzed within the framework of the newly developed refined higher-order shear deformation plate theory. Additionally, the imperfection impact on frequency behavio

The inner and the outer layers of the petrous part of the temporal bone (p.p.t.b.) become definitive until the sixth intrauterine month. Therefore, the growth and modelling of the p.p.t.b. are subsequently achieved by apposition of the periosteal outer layer. Periosteal apposition takes place in the form of plates appearing successively. The author identified seven such plates concentrated around the canals passing through the p.p.t.b. and describes them in fetuses, premature infants and adults. Periosteal ossification may cause compression of nerves passing through the p.p.t.b. thus inducing

Vitamin A deficiency and excess both cause abnormalities in mammalian longitudinal bone growth. Because all-trans retinoic acid (RA) is synthesized from vitamin A, we hypothesized that RA regulates growth plate chondrogenesis. Consistent with this hypothesis, a single oral dose of RA reduced the height of the rat proximal tibial growth plate. To determine whether RA acts directly on growth plate, fetal rat metatarsal bones were cultured in the presence of RA. In this system, RA inhibited longitudinal bone growth by three mechanisms: 1) decreased chondrocyte proliferation, (assessed by 3H-thymi

INTRODUCTION: Occipital-cervical (OC) fixation poses distinctive challenges due to unique craniocervical junction (CCJ) anatomy and a complex range of pathology leading to CCJ instability. There has been substantial evolution in modern OC fixation techniques since their introduction in the 1990s, each with implications on rate of fusion, range of motion, and ease of use.
AREAS COVERED: We performed a manual review of OC fixation techniques via a query of the National Library of Medicine MEDLINE database between 10 September and 1 October 2025. Categories of OC fixation included sublaminar wir

The cartilage growth plates in the bones of children enable limb lengthening but are weak relative to the bone, making them prone to fracturing when bones are overloaded. Better treatments for severely fractured growth plates are needed because the response to injury is a bony bridge that prematurely fuses the growth plate, leading to stunted and/or crooked limbs. Murine models of growth plate injury are advantageous for mechanistic studies, but are challenging because it is difficult to visualize and precisely injure the small growth plates in young mice. We describe here an improved growth p

Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures typically result from traumatic injuries, such as motor vehicle-related incidents, assaults, falls, and sports-related injuries. These fractures characteristically occur along suture lines where the zygomatic bone borders the frontal bone, maxilla, temporal bone, and sphenoid bone, resulting in a "tetrapod" fracture pattern that can be surgically fixated utilizing one, two, and three-point plate and screw fixation. However, fractures with complete loss of bone stock are less common, and standardized methods of fixation are not suitable for such compl

OBJECT: Both CT and high-frequency ultrasound have been shown to be reliable diagnostic tools used to differentiate normal cranial sutures from suture synostosis. In nonsynostotic plagiocephaly, overlapping of the bony plates and the so-called "sticky suture" is still controversial and is believed to represent a pathological fusion process. Synchrotron-microcomputed tomography (SRmCT) studies were undertaken to determine whether positional head deformities can be assumed to be true suture pathologies.
METHODS: Morphological features and growth development of 6 normal cranial sutures between t

Sixty-four New Zealand rabbits were used in this experiment. Four animals served as controls and the other 60 were plated on their left tibia with stainless steel plates. They were divided into 3 groups, from which the plates were removed 2, 3 and 4 months after implantation respectively. Four animals in each group were sacrificed immediately after plate removal and the others were killed 1, 2, 3 and 4 months later. Image analysis of microsection of the cortical bone underneath the plate was performed by an automatic image analysis instrument. Results showed that prolonged plate fixation would
