[Treatment of the lesions at anterolateral area of the brain stem via far-lateral approaches].

Based on our 12 cases of lesions located at anterolateral area of brain stem which were successful operated upon via far-lateral approaches, the study and progress of the far-lateral approaches were reviewed. In our cases, there were 4 intramedullary lesions including 3 vascular malformations, and 1 glioma. The other 8 lesions were located at extramedullary anterolateral area of brain stem including 2 large acoustic neuromas, 2 meningiomas at clivus and 2 neurofibromas at anterolateral areas of the medulla oblongata and upper spinal cord, 1 teratoma at the anterolateral area of pone-medulla an…

Analysis of auditory brain stem response with lidocaine injection into the cerebrospinal fluid in rats.

Auditory brain stem response (ABR) was recorded in 10 rats with total spinal anesthesia induced by injection of 2% lidocaine hydrochloride into the subarachnoid space through the skull. The ABR disappeared immediately (within 4 minutes) after the injection of 13.3 to 40.0 mg/kg lidocaine. The disappearance started with the later waves of the ABR. After cessation of the injection, the ABR reappeared and recovered progressively from wave I to wave IV. The effect of lidocaine on the ABR was reversible and extended in the acoustic nerve to the midbrain.

Variations in location of the arteries coursing between the brain stem and the free edge of the tentorium.

The locations of arterial branches crossing the free edge of the tentorium were studied in 16 adult cadavers. Two positional variants of the superior cerebellar artery and four variants of the posterior cerebral artery were identified. The points at risk of compression by different types of transtentorial brain herniation were defined for both the arterial branches supplying the brain stem and the arterial branches supplying the cerebral hemispheres.

The effects of brain-stem section on the breathing and behavioural response to morphine in the fetal sheep.

In the unanesthetized fetal sheep the administration of morphine causes initial apnoea followed by hyperpnoea. We thought that a section of the brain at midcollicular level might separate these two effects. Therefore we sectioned the brain stem of five fetuses at 132 +/- 1 (SEM) days of gestation and compared their responses to morphine (17 experiments) with that observed in seven intact fetuses at similar gestational ages (15 experiments). Brain stem sections were confirmed morphologically and histologically. Morphine, 1 mg/kg was injected in the fetal jugular vein during low-voltage electroc…

Effect of aortic balloon inflation on ventilation and brain stem blood flow in piglets.

Increases in brain stem blood flow (BBF) during hypoxia may decrease tissue PCO2/[H+], causing minute ventilation (VE) to decrease. To determine whether an increase in BBF, isolated from changes in arterial PO2 and PCO2, can affect respiration, we obstructed the thoracic aorta with a balloon in 31 intact and 24 peripherally chemobarodenervated, anesthetized, spontaneously breathing newborn piglets. Continuous measurements of cardiorespiratory variables were made before and during 2 min of aortic obstruction. Radiolabeled microspheres were used to measure BBF before and approximately 30 s after…

Trigemino-cervical reflex in pathology of the brain stem and of the first cervical cord segments.

The trigemino-cervical reflex (CR) sensitivity and specificity in the assessment of cervico-bulbar lesions was evaluated in eleven selected subjects (4 multiple sclerosis, 3 tumoural processes and 4 cervical cord spondilogenetic myelopathies). Results were compared with those obtained from others neurophysiological investigations (EMG and blink-reflex) and with neuroimaging findings. Significant abnormal responses of CR were found in all patients varying from absent responses, to delayed or reduced amplitude patterns. These data stress the utility of CR in the check of cervico-bulbar lesions,

[Study of local shiftings of the brain stem in increased intracranial pressure by a supratentorial balloon].

The study of the mechanism of pressure transmission is important for the treatment of rapid deterioration of a patient's condition with incr … by sensors discriminating two dimensional directions, sagittal and coronal planes, at the cerebrum. Brain stem shift was measured as displacement from the midline at the midbrain and ventro-dorsal shifting in the pons. ICP was raised by inflation of a supratentorial balloon located in the frontal lobe in one group or the temporal lobe in other group. As para …

On the effect of cross-hearing and clinical masking on the auditory brain-stem evoked response.

The effects of cross-hearing from the non-test ear were examined during the acquisition of the auditory brain-stem evoked response (ABR). Effective masking levels were derived from a normal hearing subject and the results used to obtain masked versus unmasked ABR thresholds in varying types of unilateral hearing loss. The results indicate that in the presence of a hearing loss adequate masking of the non-test ear is essential for valid ABR results.

[Vibration-induced morphological changes in the brain stem and spinal cord of the guinea pig].

Some disorders of the brain stem and spinal cord microcirculation were observed in male adult guinea pigs exposed to vertical vibration of frequency 40 Hz and amplitude 1 mm for 3 hours daily during 7, 14, 30 days. These changes after 7 days of vibration were seen as congestion with single small haemorrhages and after 14 days as diffuse spongiosis of the brain stem and spinal cord. After 30 days both congestion with haemorrhages and spongiosis were noted but the first predominated.

Myelin lipids in the developing cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem of normal and undernourished children.

The developmental lipid profiles in the human cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem are presented, with special reference to galactolipids as myelin markers to trace myelination in the three main parts of the human CNS. A group of undernourished children were also studied to test the vulnerability of myelinogenesis in the different regions of the human brain. Myelination was well advanced in the brain stem with regard to the other brain regions, a fact reflected in the much higher concentration of myelin lipids in the brain stem of the human foetus of 26 weeks of gestational age. The cerebrum, o…

Differential organization of thalamic projection cells in the brain stem trigeminal complex of the rat.

Following large injections of horseradish peroxidase into the thalamus of the adult rat, labeled neurons can be detected in the contralateral principal sensory nucleus and the subnucleus interpolaris of the spinal trigeminal nucleus. Thalamic projection neurons in the principal sensory nucleus are arranged in discrete aggregates which replicate the organization of the vibrissae and other parts of the face. This cellular organization corresponds very well with the pattern of vibrissae related afferent termination in this region of the nucleus as seen in SDH preparations. There is no such cellul

[Acute syndromes of the brain stem in newborn infants with birth injuries--case report].

The acute syndroms of the brainstem of cerebral injuried newborns by the birth trauma (casuistry). The neurologic clinical symptomatology of the acute syndroms of the brainstem are described in brief. Three cases of damaged newborn with this syndroms are particular published. Especially performed are: the possibility of repair, the changing of the symptoms, the danger of manual transformation of abnormous cephalic positions and the need of topological diagnosis in follow-up of special care.

[Characteristics of the process of brain stem compression in the acute period of cranio-cerebral injury].

Proceeding from an analysis of 520 cases of surgery for acute and subacute intracranial haematomas, the author concludes that the process of brain compression is characterized by the tempo, degree and duration that are interrelated. A slow tempo of compression may bring about a significant degree and duration of the compression, with the compression-dislocation syndrome being rather indistinct, which is not observed in cases of a fast tempo. The degree of compression is determined not only by the size of the haematoma, but also by the severity of the contusion and oedema of the brain, by the s
