Chromosome counts were performed on 1,100 cells from 17 malignant breast carcinomas and on 168 cells of four normal tissue samples after amethopterin treatment and G-banding. Karyotypes were established from 216 cells of 11 tumor-derived cultures and from 47 cells of four nonmalignant tissue-derived cultures. In a prospective study of 235 tissue masses verified histologically, we examined the diagnostic contribution of ultrasound in comparison to mammography. When the two methods were combined, 96.8% of all malignant neoplasms could be diagnosed correctly. Most (90.5%) were found by mammography alone and 4.8% were detectable by ultrasonography but not by mammography. With the introduction of the National Mammographic Breast Screening Programme the condition will be encountered more frequently. The authors analyzed the histories of 164 men with diseases of the mammary gland, examined in 1976 to 1986 in a clinic for breast diseases. Mastopathy was diagnosed most frequently (114 times), followed by mastodynia, mastitis and benign and malignant tumours. Seventy patients with histologically benign tumours were operated, a malignant tumour was revealed on biopsy seven times. Attention is drawn to hormonal factors in puberty and old age. The necessity to pay attention also to the male breast is emphasized.

Eight cases of breast carcinoma coexisting with fibroadenoma were retrieved from the files of the Division of Pathology from 1957 to 1987. In 3 patients (Group I) the lesion was within the fibroadenoma and in the remaining 5 patients, adjacent to it (Group II: synchronic carcinomas). All patients were females. This article reported the result of analysis of 96 cases with heaps of calcifications in the breast all verified by operation. The calcifications, according to the appearances on X-ray film were classified into 4 patterns: club-shaped, fine sandy, fragmented stonelike and coalescent. Breast cancer occurs at an older age in men than in women, usually presenting as a painless, central breast lump. Although male breast cancer is 100 times less common than female breast cancer, the prognosis for men is worse than that for women, probably because of delay in diagnosis. Fifteen examples of a hitherto undescribed lesion, which we have designated "collagenous spherulosis," were encountered in breast tissue from women aged 39 to 55 years. Although breast cancer is a rare event in pregnancy, the consequences of a delay in its detection and of late-stage disease are tragic for the young woman who presents in her childbearing years.
