Capillary electrophoresis (CE) is an attractive approach for the analysis of drugs in body fluids. We made a simultaneous analysis of nitrazepam, diazepam, estazolam, bromazepam, triazolam and flurazepam using CE with on-column detection at 200 nm. We obtained the best electropherograms under a condition of 5 mM phosphate-borate (pH 8.5) containing 50 mM SDS and 15% methanol. We examined the effect of the sample solvent matrix on the electropherograms obtained, indicating that increasing the methanol content in the sample solvent or the injection volume above a certain threshold limit decrease

We present a 6-month-old girl with the unusual combination of microphthalmos, facial capillary hemangioma and Dandy-Walker malformation. This is the fourth case with such an association reported in the literature. On the basis of the experience with our patient and with those previously reported, we stress the importance of performing brain-imaging studies on all infants with large facial hemangiomas, or if unusual ophthalmic findings are present.

Two cases of pyogenic granuloma recurred despite what was originally thought to be a sufficient surgical excision. The granulomas presented clinically as polypoid structures, one on the finger and one on the chin. Conjunctival, muscle, and peripheral artery biopsies were examined by light and electron microscopy in a patient with clinically diagnosed Rett syndrome. Quantitative study of the capillary density of normal dermis of 113 biopsy specimens taken from 20 body sites from 6 cadavers was carried out. Direct intravital microscopic examinations were made in nailfold capillaries in subjects with homozygous sickle cell disease (HbSS red cells). A newly developed capillary viscometer (capillary diameter 496 micron, length 10 cm) was tested and used for measurement of blood viscosity. The determination of pressure drop along the capillary during a constant flow allowed the calculation of the apparent viscosity. By changing the flow rate, the shear rate could be varied from 0.67 to 590 sec-1. A sample of 0.5 ml was sufficient for readings to be made at 10 shear rates in this range.
