Dietary supplementation with caffeine increases survival rate, reduces microbial load and protects the liver against Aeromonas hydrophila-induced hepatic damage in the grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella.

The indiscriminate use of antibiotics is a major concern for the aquaculture industry because of the increasing prevalence of bacterial resistance, including the emergence of multi-resistant strains of Aeromonas hydrophila. Therefore, alternative ecofriendly therapeutic or prophylactic approaches such as natural products have been suggested, including caffeine, a methylxanthine with potent bactericidal and antioxidant properties. The aims of this study were to evaluate whether dietary supplementation with caffeine exerted bactericidal effects against A. hydrophila, and to determine whether caf

How to become a successful invasive tapeworm: a case study of abandoned sexuality and exceptional chromosome diversification in the triploid carp parasite Atractolytocestus huronensis Anthony, 1958 (Caryophyllidea: Lytocestidae).

BACKGROUND: A cytogenetic analysis of the new local triploid population of the caryophyllidean tapeworm Atractolytocestus huronensis, a unique parthenogenetic species with the ability to colonise new regions, was performed to understand the inner structure of its chromosome complement. METHODS: A karyotype analysis was carried out using classical Giemsa staining and C-banding combined with fluorescent DAPI staining. A hypothesis that triplets are composed from three homologue chromosomes of approximately the same length and same centromere position was tested statistically for multiple depend

Redescription of Chloromyxum ellipticum Li & Nie, 1973 (Myxosporea: Chloromyxidae) infecting the gall bladder of grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idellus Valenciennes, 1844, supplemented by morphological and molecular characteristics.

The traditional taxonomy of the genus Chloromyxum Mingazzini, 1890 has been intensively challenged to be paraphyletic by recent ribosomal DNA (rDNA)-based phylogenetic analysis. Undersampling to get rich sequence data to infer more scientific phylogenetic relationships makes scientists conservatively assign all non-marine elasmobranch-infecting species as Chloromyxum sensu lato. Although complex ridge pattern on the spore surface observed by scanning electron microscopy was thought to be critical for the identification of Chloromyxum species, insufficient data also prevent this ultrastructural

Anti-carbamylated Protein Antibody Levels Correlate with Anti-Sa (Citrullinated Vimentin) Antibody Levels in Rheumatoid Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: The presence of anticitrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) indicates a breach in immune tolerance. Recent studies indicate that this breach extends to homocitrullination of lysines with the formation of anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies. We analyzed the clinical and serologic relationships of anti-CarP in 2 RA cohorts. METHODS: Circulating levels of immunoglobulin G anti-CarP antibodies were determined by ELISA in established (Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center) and early (Sherbrooke University Hospital Center) cohorts and evaluated for

YY super sperm lead to all male triploids and tetraploids.

BACKGROUND: Androgenesis is a unique and rarely encountered reproductive mode in which the offspring only inherit the paternal nuclear genome, resulting in relatively few viable individuals. RESULTS: In this study, a super male (YY) crucian carp was obtained by androgenesis with the diploid sperm of autotetraploid crucian carp (4n = 200). Flow cytometry assay confirmed the fish was diploid. The scanning electron microscopy and flow cytometry analysis results of sperm revealed that the YY crucian carp produced unreduced diploid sperm. To prove the special reproductive characteristic and homozy

Potential effects of host competence and schooling behavior on parasite transmission in a host-pathogen system: a test of the dilution effect.

High species diversity in a community may reduce the risk of infectious disease, termed the dilution effect. However, the generality of the dilution effect in different disease systems remains controversial as both host competence and behaviors of hosts may play roles in dilution or amplification of disease. Using the goldfish (Carassius auratus)-monogenean ectoparasite (Gyrodactylus kobayashii) system, effects of host competence and schooling behavior on parasite transmission were investigated while holding focal host density constant. Following competency tests of 12 fish species as potentia

Poly-arginine-18 (R18) Confers Neuroprotection through Glutamate Receptor Modulation, Intracellular Calcium Reduction, and Preservation of Mitochondrial Function.

Recent studies have highlighted that a novel class of neuroprotective peptide, known as cationic arginine-rich peptides (CARPs), have intrinsic neuroprotective properties and are particularly effective anti-excitotoxic agents. As such, the present study investigated the mechanisms underlying the anti-excitotoxic properties of CARPs, using poly-arginine-18 (R18; 18-mer of arginine) as a representative peptide. Cortical neuronal cultures subjected to glutamic acid excitotoxicity were used to assess the effects of R18 on ionotropic glutamate receptor (iGluR)-mediated intracellular calcium influx,…

Growth hormone-dependent potentiation of gonadotropin-stimulated steroid production by ovarian follicles of the goldfish.

The possible involvement of growth hormone (GH) in the regulation of ovarian function in the goldfish was investigated by determining the effects of common carp GH on steroid production by vitellogenic and preovulatory ovarian follicles incubated in vitro. Carp GH acts in a dose-dependent manner to potentiate the actions of common carp gonadotropin (GtH) on the production of 17 beta-estradiol and testosterone by vitellogenic ovarian follicles and the actions of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on testosterone production by preovulatory ovarian follicles. Carp GH alone had no effect on basal

Anti-carbamylated protein antibodies: are they useful for the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis?

OBJECTIVES: ACR/EULAR-2010 classification criteria for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rely heavily on the presence of anti-citrullinated peptide antibody (ACPA). The role of anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (anti-CarP) in this context is uncertain. We aimed to investigate the value of anti-CarP for RA classification in patients with early inflammatory arthritis. METHODS: Patients (n=402) were recruited from an early arthritis clinic and followed for 24 months. Healthy controls (n=95) were included. An anti-CarP ELISA was performed (aU/mL). Statistical analysis used regression and AUC analysis.

The specificity of anti-carbamylated protein antibodies for rheumatoid arthritis in a setting of early arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-carbamylated protein (anti-CarP) antibodies have been described in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and arthralgia patients at risk of developing RA. To what extent these autoantibodies are specific for RA is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the diagnostic performance of the presence of anti-CarP antibodies for RA in a setting of early arthritis. METHODS: Anti-CarP antibodies were detected using carbamylated fetal calf serum as substrate. Anti-CCP2 antibodies were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoglobulin M (IgM) rheumatoid factor (RF) as part of routi

Alternate-day steroids affect carpal maturation more than radius, ulna and short bones.

Radius, ulna, short bones (RUS) and carpal (CARP) bone age were assessed in 26 steroid-dependent nephrotic boys after at least 1 year of alternate-day prednisone therapy, and in 26 age- and sex-matched control subjects. No significant difference in RUS bone age was found between patients and controls. CARP bone age of patients was significantly (P = 0.01) more retarded than in controls. In patients, CARP bone age delay was related to their relative height at the time of study (P = 0.01). We conclude that CARP bones are more prone to effects of steroids than are RUS bones. Therefore, CARP bone

Anti-carbamylated protein antibodies and skin involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis: An intriguing association.

Carbamylation is a post-translational modification that mostly affects proteins with low turnover, such as dermal proteins. Carbamylated proteins accumulate in skin in an age-dependent manner, contributing to tissue alterations. As dermis is affected by systemic sclerosis (SSc) and anti-carbamylated protein antibodies (anti-CarP Ab) are found in SSc patients, we sought to evaluate the specificity of anti-CarP Ab and their relationship with clinical parameters reflecting skin involvement in SSc. This study investigated serum samples and clinical data from 124 patients with SSc. Anti-CarP Ab wer
