Disability, mortality, and incidence of cancer among Geneva painters and electricians: a historical prospective study.

The 1916 painters and the 1948 electricians who resided in the Canton of Geneva at the time of the 1970 census were identified and followed up to 1984. During the study period 121 disability pensions were awarded to painters and 59 to electricians. Age standardised incidence of disability per 1000 man-years at risk was higher among painters than among electricians for all neuropsychiatric causes (1.23/1000 and 0.68/1000, respectively) and for all other causes (5.50/1000 and 3.41/1000, respectively). No case of presenile dementia was diagnosed among painters. There was inadequate evidence to in

Historical Redlining, Contemporary Gentrification, and Severe Maternal Morbidity in California, 2005-2018.

IMPORTANCE: Historically redlined neighborhoods may experience disinvestment, influencing their likelihood of gentrification, a process of neighborhood (re-)development that unequally distributes harms and benefits by race and class. Understanding the combined outcomes of redlining and gentrification informs how the mutually constitutive systems of structural racism and racial capitalism affect pregnancy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine if historical redlining and contemporary gentrification is associated with increased severe maternal morbidity (SMM) odds. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:

Prenatal Exposure to Air Pollution and Autism Spectrum Disorder: Sensitive Windows of Exposure and Sex Differences.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that air pollution exposures during pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, and the risk appears to be greater for boys. However, studies assessing gestational windows of susceptibility have been mostly limited by trimesters. OBJECTIVE: We identified sensitive windows of exposure to regional air pollution and risk of ASD and examined sex differences in a large birth cohort. METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study included 294,937 mother-child pairs with singleton deliveries in Kaiser Perma

Impact of Socioeconomic Status, Race and Ethnicity, and Geography on Prenatal Detection of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and Transposition of the Great Arteries.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal detection (PND) has benefits for infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and transposition of the great arteries (TGA), but associations between sociodemographic and geographic factors with PND have not been sufficiently explored. This study evaluated whether socioeconomic quartile (SEQ), public insurance, race and ethnicity, rural residence, and distance of residence (distance and driving time from a cardiac surgical center) are associated with the PND or timing of PND, with a secondary aim to analyze differences between the United States and Canada. METHODS:

Geospatial analysis of preterm and small-for-gestational age births in Washington D.C.

BACKGROUND: This study is based on the recognition that adverse pregnancy outcomes significantly affect maternal and infant health, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. These outcomes are shaped by a complex interplay of individual-level factors—like maternal age and education—and community-level influences, including socio-economic status and access to healthcare. Understanding these determinants is crucial for developing effective public health strategies, especially for marginalized populations, by identifying high-risk areas and informing targeted interventions that address both i

Ambient Trichloroethylene Exposure and Parkinson Disease Risk in Medicare Beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Trichloroethylene (TCE) is an important environmental contaminant in the United States due to widespread use industrially. Epidemiologic studies suggest that occupational exposure to TCE and TCE-contaminated drinking water may increase the risk of Parkinson disease (PD). The aim of this study was to investigate the nationwide relationship between ambient TCE and PD risk. METHODS: We performed a nationwide, population-based, case-control study to investigate the association between incident PD in US Medicare beneficiaries aged 67 years and older in 2016-2018 and thei

Estimated Indirect Cost Savings of Using Telehealth Among Nonelderly Patients With Cancer.

IMPORTANCE: Patients with cancer typically have greater financial hardships and time costs than individuals without cancer. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this, while posing substantial challenges to delivering cancer care and resulting in important changes in care-delivery models, including the rapid adoption of telehealth. OBJECTIVE: To estimate patient travel, time, and cost savings associated with telehealth for cancer care delivery. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: An economic evaluation of cost savings from completed telehealth visits from April 1, 2020, to June 30, 2021, in a

Food Desert Residence Is Not Associated With Dietary Adherence or Complication Rates in Patients With Isolated Mandibular Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Mandible fracture management requires postoperative dietary modifications to promote healing. Over 20 million Americans live in food deserts, low-income neighborhoods over one mile from a grocery store. The relationship between food desert residence (FDR) and adherence to postoperative dietary instructions remains unexplored. PURPOSE: This study's purpose is to evaluate the relationships between FDR, known risk factors, dietary adherence, and complications among patients with isolated mandible fractures. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This retrospective cohort study was conducted

Identifying urban hotspots of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika transmission in Mexico to support risk stratification efforts: a spatial analysis.

BACKGROUND: Effective Aedes aegypti control is limited, in part, by the difficulty in achieving sufficient intervention coverage. To maximise the effect of vector control, areas with persistently high numbers of Aedes-borne disease cases could be identified and prioritised for preventive interventions. We aimed to identify persistent Aedes-borne disease hotspots in cities across southern Mexico. METHODS: In this spatial analysis, geocoded cases of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika from nine endemic Mexican cities were aggregated at the census-tract level. We included cities that were located in s

Air pollution and mortality in a large, representative U.S. cohort: multiple-pollutant analyses, and spatial and temporal decompositions.

BACKGROUND: Cohort studies have documented associations between fine particulate matter air pollution (PM2.5) and mortality risk. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the contribution of co-pollutants and the stability of pollution-mortality associations in models that include multiple air pollutants. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the PM2.5-mortality relationship varies spatially, when exposures are decomposed according to scale of spatial variability, or temporally, when effect estimates are allowed to change between years. METHODS: A cohort of 635,539 individuals was compiled u

Cocaine use and other suspected risk factors for obsessive-compulsive disorder: a prospective study with data from the Epidemiologic Catchment Area surveys.

Using prospectively gathered epidemiologic data, we sought to estimate the degree to which the risk of obsessive-compulsive disorder might be elevated among adults actively using cocaine, with and without illicit use of marijuana or other controlled substances. Study subjects were selected in 1980-84 by taking probability samples of adult household residents at five sites of the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Program: New Haven, Connecticut; Baltimore, Maryland; St. Louis, Missouri; Durham-Piedmont, North Carolina; Los Angeles, California. Soon after sampling at baseline, a total of 18,572

The association between natural environments and childhood mental health and development: A systematic review and assessment of different exposure measurements.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have assessed the relationship between exposure to natural environments (NEs) and childhood mental health and development. In most cases, a positive association has been found, but results are inconsistent, and the strength of association is unclear. This inconsistency may reflect the heterogeneity in measurements used to assess NE. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to identify the most common NE metrics used in childhood mental health and development research. Our second aim is to identify the metrics that are most consistently associated with health and ass

Geosocial-networking App Use Among Men who Have Sex with Men in High HIV Community Viral Load Areas of Baltimore City.

Geosocial networking applications (GSN apps) are important tools for HIV/sexually transmitted infection prevention among men who have sex with men (MSM). Strategies for identifying high transmission and acquisition among GSN app users are needed to prioritize public health response. Community viral load (CVL) is associated with HIV transmission and can be used to identify populations with behaviors/environment associated with HIV/STI risk. We sought to determine user profile characteristics and utilization patterns associated with GSN app use in high CVL census tracts (CT). We used routine HIV

All I need is the air that I breath: outdoor air quality and asthma.

In recent years, developing insight into the pathophysiology of asthma and advances in asthma management have been substantial. Despite these advancements, asthma remains a significant health problem in the paediatric population. In the USA, the prevalence of asthma in children under 18 years of age is estimated at 7% [US Environmental Health Protection Agency. Publication # EPA-100-r-018. Washington, DC, 2000]. Prevalence rates in various subpopulations, particularly African and Hispanic Americans, are much higher. Certain inner-city census tracts have estimated prevalence rates of 20 to 25%
