Structural Integrity of Anterior Ceramic Resin-Bonded Fixed Partial Denture: A Finite Element Analysis Study.

This study was conducted as a means to evaluate the stress distribution patterns of anterior ceramic resin-bonded fixed partial dentures derived from different materials and numerous connector designs that had various loading conditions imposed onto them through the utilization of the finite element method. A finite element model was established on the basis of the cone beam computed tomography image of a cantilevered resin-bonded fixed partial denture with a central incisor as an abutment and a lateral incisor as a pontic. Sixteen finite element models representing different conditions were s

Mechanical Properties, Crack Width, and Propagation of Waste Ceramic Concrete Subjected to Elevated Temperatures: A Comprehensive Study.

Waste ceramic concrete (WOC) made from waste ceramic floor tiles has several economic and environmental benefits. Fire is one of the most common disasters in buildings, and WOC is a brittle construction material; therefore, the mechanical properties of WOC structures under high temperatures should be considered. According to previous studies, hybrid fiber can further reduce damage to concrete under high temperatures. Meanwhile, crack width and propagation are among the key characteristics of concrete materials that need to be considered, but few studies have focused on their behavior when subj

Porous Ceramic Sternal Prosthesis Implantation in a 13-Year-Old Patient Presenting with Metastatic Ewing's Sarcoma.

Ewing's sarcoma is the second most frequent primary malignant bone tumor in adolescents and young adults. Locations on the thoracic wall represent up to 20% of primary and secondary locations. We present the case of a 13-year-old patient treated with the use of a radiolucency porous bioceramic prosthesis as a sternal replacement for a wide tumor resection in an oncologic context. Focal radiation therapy was not possible due to the high risk of severe myocardial injuries caused by the sternal location of the tumor. The sternum CERAMIL® (I.CERAM, Limoges, France), in porous alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) h

Effect of fine bubbles for washing of monolith type porous ceramic membranes treating oil-in-water emulsions.

Produced water generated in the recovery of crude oil contains oil and high concentrations of salts, organic matter, and suspended solids and must therefore be treated appropriately prior to disposal. Monolithic ceramic membranes have high oil removal rates and have the advantage of being compact, having a long life, and withstanding chemicals, heat, and high cleaning pressures. Membrane fouling, however, is a significant drawback to membrane filtration. Scrubbing using air bubbles generated by a diffuser is generally used to physically clean membranes. However, monolithic ceramic membranes ca

The Role of the Morphological Characterization of Multilayer Hydrophobized Ceramic Membranes on the Prediction of Sweeping Gas Membrane Distillation Performances.

This paper shows which morphological characterization method is most appropriate to simulating membrane performance in sweeping gas membrane distillation in the case of multilayer hydrophobized ceramic membranes. As a case study, capillary four-layer hydrophobic carbon-based titania membranes arranged in bundles in a shell-and-tube configuration were tested with NaCl-water solutions using air as sweeping gas, operating at temperatures from 40 to 110 °C and at pressures up to 5.3 bar. Contrary to what is generally performed for polymeric membranes and also suggested by other authors for ceramic

Evaluating the Bond Strength of a Polymer Infiltrated Ceramic Network to Zirconia Using the Crossbeam Push-Off Method.

Porcelains and glass-ceramics have been used to produce CAD-milled veneers and crowns for zirconia copings and implant-abutments. This study evaluated the bondstrength of a polymer-infiltrated-ceramic-network to zirconia using two adhesive cement systems: Panavia 21 and Multilink Automix. Lithium disilicate and feldspathic porcelain were also tested as reference CAD-On materials. Long beams (3x6x40 mm³) of zirconia and short beams (3x6x15 mm³) of the CAD-On materials were prepared. Zirconia and each CAD-On material were bonded in a crossbeam arrangement and subjected to a modified tensile bond…

Fracture resistance of Ceramic-Polymer hybrid materials using microscopic finite element analysis and experimental validation.

The objective of this paper is to elucidate the response to contact stresses of Polymer Infiltrated Ceramic Network (PICN) using the microscopic viscoplastic finite elements, validated by clinically relevant in vitro tests. A feldspathic ceramic material, namely Vita Mark II, is an interconnected structure infiltrated with the polymer (PMMA). Axisymmetric finite element microstructure models are reconstructed from two-dimensional images of a PICN microstructure. Viscoplastic finite element analysis (FEA) with various degrees of microscopic damages occurring over contact is performed. The force

CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic crowns: Effect of occlusal thickness on fracture resistance and fractographic analysis.

This study uses fracture tests and fractographical analysis to compare computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) lithium disilicate molar crowns with the previous occlusal thickness recommendation of 1.5-mm, the new recommendation of 1.0-mm, and a less invasive thickness of 0.8-mm. After fatigue application, fracture tests and fractographic analysis were conducted. The fracture resistance of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate molar crowns was different depending on the occlusal thickness of the restoration, and decreased with lower the thickness. However, the fracture resistance

Stress-Induced Microcracking and Fracture Characterization for Ultra-High-Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites at High Temperatures.

In this paper, we estimated the temperature-dependent critical inclusion size for microcracking under residual stress and applied stress for particulate-reinforced ultra-high-temperature ceramic matrix composites. The critical flaw size and applied stress for the stable growth of radial cracks under different temperatures were also estimated. It was found that under a lower applied stress, the critical inclusion size was sensitive to the temperature. Under higher applied stresses, the sensitivity became smaller. For ceramic materials with pre-existing microcracks, the crack resistance could be

Ceramic femoral head in highly cross-linked polyethylene cup. 5 year results of a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Although few methods are used to estimate polyethylene liner wear from radiographs of total hip replacements, there is no consensus with regard to the accuracy of these methods. Highly cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is reported to have low rates of linear wear in the literature. However, there are not reports about wear rate of ceramic head in hxple cup at 5 years postoperatively, evaluated by Dorr method. We evaluated the wear rate of HXPLE, within the first five years after implantation using manual techniques of Dorr. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We evaluated 143 patients (93 males

Long-term Follow-up of 254 Ceramic Coated Implant (CCI) Evolution Total Ankle Replacements.

BACKGROUND: The ceramic coated implant (CCI) Evolution was a third-generation implant design used in approximately 2000 total ankle replacements (TARs) between 2003 and 2016. Because this implant was abandoned, long-term follow-up studies are lacking. METHODS: All patients undergoing TAR using a CCI prosthesis between 2004 and 2012 were included for analysis. Preoperatively the tibiotalar alignment was measured, and postoperatively the patients were followed up clinically, with radiographs and by questionnaire. The primary outcome was implant survival at 10 years of follow-up. Implant surviva

[Evaluation of fracture strength of two kinds of zirconia all-ceramic crowns with different edge compensation angles].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of different edge compensation angles on the fracture strength of multilayer zirconia all-ceramic crowns and traditional uniform zirconia all-ceramic crowns. METHODS: The resin tooth preparation specimen of the mandibular first molar with a knife-edge was fabricated. A 3D digital model of the specimen was obtained by scanning it with a 3D dental model scanner. The 3D digital model was imported into computer aided design (CAD) software, and three 3D digital models of the full crown with the same surface shape are designed with the edge compensation angles of

Polyethylene Wear With Ceramic and Metal Femoral Heads at 5 Years: A Randomized Controlled Trial With Radiostereometric Analysis.

BACKGROUND: A common bearing combination in total hip arthroplasty today is a metal femoral head articulating with polyethylene in the cup. Ceramic heads are thought to be more resistant to third-body damage, and have better wettability and decreased surface roughness, which taken together have been suggested to result in less polyethylene wear. The purpose of this study is to compare the initial creep deformation and follow wear pattern, using radiostereometric analysis, of ceramic and metal femoral heads that articulate with a modern highly cross-linked polyethylene cup liner. METHODS: Fift
