The role of soft tissue mobilization in reducing orofacial and general complaints in a patient with Kimmerle anomaly and temporomandibular joint disorder: A case report.

Background: Kimmerle anomaly belongs to the anatomic varieties of the first cervical vertebra. The clinical pattern is dominated by vascular- and neurogenic-type headaches, dizziness, decreased postural muscle tension, and vegetative symptoms. Clinical Presentation: A 37-year-old woman who suffered from headache and pain in the left temporomandibular joint underwent clinical examination, electromyography of masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joint vibration analysis, cone beam computed tomography, and soft tissue mobilization. Radiologic examination revealed Kimmerle anomaly on the right s

Tetrapod-like axial regionalization in an early ray-finned fish.

Tetrapods possess up to five morphologically distinct vertebral series: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and caudal. The evolution of axial regionalization has been linked to derived Hox expression patterns during development and the demands of weight-bearing and walking on land. These evolutionary and functional explanations are supported by an absence of similar traits in fishes, living and extinct. Here, I show that, Tarrasius problematicus, a marine ray-finned fish from the Mississippian (Early Carboniferous; 359-318 Ma) of Scotland, is the first non-tetrapod known to possess tetrapod-li

Comparative analysis of skin microbiome across 10 sites in Koreans for forensic applications: a pilot study.

Various microorganisms have a symbiotic relationship with human skin cells, influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The composition of the human microbiome varies based on the skin site. To investigate the microbial characteristics of different skin sites in Koreans, microbiome samples were collected from the scalp, forehead, cheek, retroauricular crease, cervical vertebrae, axilla, palm, lateral finger, femur, and plantar skin. The concentrations of human and bacterial DNA were quantified, and QIIME2 and MicrobiomeAnalyst platforms were used for microbial analysis. Forehead and cheek m…

Multiple Clay Shoveler's Fractures of the Thoracic Spine.

Typically, a clay shoveler's fracture is a stress-type avulsion fracture involving the spinous processes of the lower cervical or upper thoracic vertebrae. Even though C7 and T1 are the most commonly involved spinal levels, these avulsion fractures can occur at any lower cervical or upper thoracic level, either as solitary or multiple fractures. This fracture used to be common in workers who shovel heavy loads of clay for long periods, hence its name. It does not cause any structural, functional, or neurological impairments and is therefore considered a stable fracture. Management is mostly co

Spinal tuberculosis in a developed country. A review of 26 cases with special emphasis on abscesses and neurologic complications.

A retrospective study of 26 cases was analyzed to review the sometimes unfamiliar clinical appearance and outcome of Pott's disease. Swiss nationals (46%) were older than patients from Mediterranean or developing countries (mean age, 69 versus 29 years). The number of vertebrae initially involved was 2.2. Localization was lumbar in ten cases, thoracic and lumbar in two, and thoracic or cervical in 14. Abscesses were present in 15 (57%) subjects and appeared during treatment in 20% of these cases. They were twice as frequent in non-Swiss patients. Three patients had surgery because of progressi

Covariation in the Craniocervical Junction of Carnivora.

The craniocervical junction is the transition between the skull and the vertebral column that provides mobility while maintaining sufficient stability (i.e., protection of the brainstem and the spinal cord). The key elements involved are the occiput, the first cervical vertebra (CV1, atlas) and the second cervical vertebra (CV2, axis). The two vertebrae forming the atlas-axis complex are distinct in their morphology and differences in form have been linked to differences in ecological function in mammals. Here, we quantified the morphological diversity of the cranium, CV1 and CV2 in a sample o

[Surgical treatment of spinal metastases by stabilization using posterior plates screwed into the vertebral pedicles].

Ninety spinal metastases were treated by plating using a posterior approach. Fifty were thoracic or thoraco-lumbar, 11 in the upper cervical spine, 14 in the lower cervical spine and fifteen in the lumbar spine. Surgical fixation was followed by radiotherapy, chemotherapy or hormone therapy, when indicated. In the upper cervical region a special plate was screwed into the occiput. In the lower cervical spine fixation was accompanied by anterior vertebrectomy at the same procedure. In the entire series good stability was obtained in nine out of ten cases. Mortality during the first post-operati

Absence of scalenus anterior muscle.

A rare anomaly of the scalenus muscles is described. In this case, the right scalenus anterior muscle was absent. As a substitute for this muscle, some aberrant muscle slips arose from the lower vertebrae and descended in front of the ventral rami of the lower cervical nerves. These aberrant slips then ran between the ventral rami of the the eighth cervical and first thoracic nerves, and were fused with the right scalenus medius muscle. Thus, the subclavian artery and vein ran in front of the aberrant slips, together with the ventral ramus of the first thoracic nerve. The aberrant muscle slips

Surgical Technique for the Implantation of a Biomimetic Artificial Intervertebral Disc in a Goat Animal Model.

Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) has emerged as a surgical solution for patients with degenerative compressive cervical myelopathy but faces limitations, particularly in achieving stable integration. One of the primary challenges with current artificial discs is the risk of migration and dislocation due to insufficient osseointegration with the adjacent vertebrae. While CDA is an established treatment in human medicine, dogs with cervical myelopathy are routinely treated with decompressive surgeries. In veterinary medicine, there is particular interest in innovative therapies, such as disc art

Biomechanical effect of C5-C6 intervertebral disc degeneration on the human lower cervical spine (C3-C7): a finite element study.

The biomechanical effects of intervertebral discs and facet joints degeneration on the cervical spine are essential to understanding the mechanisms of spinal disorders to improve pathological and clinical treatment. In this study, the biomechanical effects of a progressively degenerated C5-C6 segment on the human lower cervical spine are determined by a detailed simulation of intervertebral disc degeneration. A detailed asymmetric three-dimension intact finite element model was developed using computed tomography scan data of the human lower cervical spine (C3-C7). The intact finite element mo
