A patient with Turner's syndrome and untreated diabetes mellitus presented with a blind, painful, glaucomatous eye and progressive unilateral proptosis. Choroidal osteomas are rare, benign, ossifying tumors of the choroid that are either flat or slightly elevated, located juxtapapillary, and usually have a well-defined geographic border. We describe a case of choroidal osteoma in a young male with atypical features, including a high elevation of the lesion, blurred margins, and a location away from the optic disc. We also describe the role of multimodal imaging, which allowed us to distinguish an atypical variant of choroidal osteoma from other choroidal mass lesions.

PURPOSE: To report a case of "posterior scleral melanocytosis," a pigmented lesion of the posterior sclera that clinically resembles a flat choroidal nevus.
METHODS: Case report of a patient with posterior scleral melanocytosis. A 52-year-old man sought treatment for decreased vision in his right eye for 3 weeks. Visual acuity was 20/120. Examination revealed an elevated choroidal nevus at the posterior pole. Fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographies disclosed fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachment extending under the fovea. The patient was treated by two sessions of photodynamic therapy with verteporfin. Visual acuity improved to 20/40. The fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachment area diminished and the fovea is clear of lesion. Seven months after the last treatment, visual acuity remains stable. Photo

PURPOSE: To seek out correlations between preoperative electro-oculogram (EOG) recordings with different types of uveal melanomas, after surgery.

A large survey was conducted to identify patients with choroidal and ciliary body melanomas in whom preoperative evaluation for the presence of metastases was performed. Twenty-nine (2.47%) of 1,214 patients were found to have metastases prior to surgical manipulation of the globe. Liver function enzymes combined with liver-spleen scanning is the most effective means for screening for the presence of metastases in these patients and should be performed in all cases in which surgical manipulation of the globe is anticipated.
