Vibrio and Bacterial Communities Across a Pollution Gradient in the Bay of Bengal: Unraveling Their Biogeochemical Drivers.

The highly populated coasts of the Bay of Bengal are particularly vulnerable to water-borne diseases, pollution and climatic extremes. The environmental factors behind bacterial community composition and Vibrio distribution were investigated in an estuarine system of a cholera-endemic region in the coastline of Bangladesh. Higher temperatures and sewage pollution were important drivers of the abundance of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae. A closer relation between non-culturable Vibrio and particulate organic matter (POM) was inferred during the post-monsoon. The distribution of operational taxonomic

High-Resolution Ecological Niche Modeling of Ixodes scapularis Ticks Based on Passive Surveillance Data at the Northern Frontier of Lyme Disease Emergence in North America.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is a bacterial infection transmitted by the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in eastern North America. It is an emerging disease in Canada due to the expanding range of its tick vector. Environmental risk maps for LD, based on the distribution of the black-legged tick, have focused on coarse determinants such as climate. However, climatic factors vary little within individual health units, the level at which local public health decision-making takes place. We hypothesize that high-resolution environmental data and routinely collected passive surveillance data

Lifting options for stratospheric aerosol geoengineering: advantages of tethered balloon systems.

The Royal Society report 'Geoengineering the Climate' identified solar radiation management using albedo-enhancing aerosols injected into the stratosphere as the most affordable and effective option for geoengineering, but did not consider in any detail the options for delivery. This paper provides outline engineering analyses of the options, both for batch-delivery processes, following up on previous work for artillery shells, missiles, aircraft and free-flying balloons, as well as a more lengthy analysis of continuous-delivery systems that require a pipe connected to the ground and supported

Food safety in the 21st century.

The global importance of food safety is not fully appreciated by many public health authorities despite a constant increase in the prevalence of foodborne illness. Numerous devastating outbreaks of salmonellosis, cholera, enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli infections, hepatitis A and other diseases have occurred in both industrialized and developing countries. In addition, many of the re-emerging or newly recognized pathogens are foodborne or have the potential of being transmitted by food and/or drinking water. More foodborne pathogens can be expected because of changing production methods,

Tree Species Diversity, Canopy Height, and Soil Nutrient Availability Shape Leaf Insect Herbivory in Zhoushan Archipelago, China.

Plant-insect interactions regulate ecosystem processes and productivity. Most studies have focused on the effect of plant diversity on insect herbivory in grasslands, croplands, and natural forests. However, the direction of this effect remains controversial. Unlike these ecosystems, island ecosystems possess distinct geographical features and provide natural experimental settings for studying trophic interactions. Nevertheless, the effects of plant diversity, island characteristics, and their interactions on insect herbivory in such environments have scarcely been explored. To test the relati

Significant sunlight-driven methane production at the wetland sediment-water interface.

Anthropogenic and natural wetlands are key contributors to global emissions of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas influencing Earth's climate. Wetland CH4 emissions are typically attributed to anaerobic microbial respiration; however, biotic sources alone do not account for the full extent of CH4 emissions observed in wetlands, leaving a substantial gap in understanding wetland CH4 emission sources. Here, we reveal that abiotic sunlight-driven processes efficiently drive CH4 production in wetlands with shallow water table. This is facilitated by rapid photochemical reactive oxygen species

Exploring the flavor profiles of blue foods: Mechanistic insights, factor analysis, and assessment strategies.

This chapter systematically explores the flavor profiles of blue foods (aquatic foods), covering formation mechanisms, influencing factors, and assessment strategies. As a core global resource for nutrition and food security, blue food flavor research faces challenges including extreme complexity, high variability, and rapid deterioration. Flavors originate from dynamic interactions between volatile and nonvolatile compounds, with proteins regulating flavor release through binding, conformational changes, and reaction sites, while lipid oxidation and Maillard reactions represent key formation

Distinct Roles of NO2 versus NO and Synergisms with SO2 in Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from β-Myrcene Photooxidation.

Elucidating the impacts of gaseous pollutants on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation mechanisms is critical for developing effective PM2.5 mitigation strategies. However, the combined effects of NOx (NOx = NO2 + NO) and SO2 on SOA compositions under complex photochemical conditions remain mechanistically unresolved. Here, we investigated the individual roles of NO2/NO and their combined effects with SO2 on β-myrcene photooxidation. Our results showed that NO2 enhanced the SOA yield and the O:C ratio through oxidant amplification, whereas NO suppressed nucleation and oxidation states of p

Posttraumatic Growth as a Pathway to Wellness for Individuals and Organizations.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) offers an alternative understanding of trauma response, contrasting with traditional perspectives focused solely on symptom development and resilience. In the PTG model, individuals and groups report positive changes in life philosophy, self-understanding, and interpersonal relationships because of successfully navigating the struggles involved with experiencing adversity. This narrative review includes the evolution of PTG theory, highlighting the disruption of core beliefs, the role of rumination, and the reconstruction of a life narrative as central mechanisms of

Beyond carbonate biomineralization: why prokaryote-driven CO2 sequestration demands holistic evaluation.

Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) offers a promising biological approach to sequester atmospheric CO2 as stable mineral carbonates, mitigating climate change impacts. This perspective highlights the complexity underpinning prokaryote-driven biomineralization processes, emphasizing the necessity for holistic evaluation beyond simple carbonate formation. Key metabolic pathways such as carbonic anhydrase-mediated CO2 hydration, ureolysis, photosynthesis, and sulfate reduction contribute variably to mineral precipitation and the carbon footprint. Furthermore, calcium carbonate pol

Continuing benefits of the Montreal Protocol and protection of the stratospheric ozone layer for human health and the environment.

The protection of Earth's stratospheric ozone (O3) is an ongoing process under the auspices of the universally ratified Montreal Protocol and its Amendments and adjustments. A critical part of this process is the assessment of the environmental issues related to changes in O3. The United Nations Environment Programme's Environmental Effects Assessment Panel provides annual scientific evaluations of some of the key issues arising in the recent collective knowledge base. This current update includes a comprehensive assessment of the incidence rates of skin cancer, cataract and other skin and eye

Power distance and migrant nurses: The liminality of acculturation.

A dearth of literature focuses on the relationship between acculturation, power distance and liminality for migrant nurses entering foreign workplaces. Expectations are for migrant nurses to be practice-ready swiftly. However, this aspiration is naïve given the complex shifts that occur in deeply held cultural beliefs and practices and is dependent on an organisational climate of reciprocal willingness to adapt and learn. This exploratory study identified that although a plethora of literature addresses challenges migrant nurses face, there are limited data that link these transitional process

A mechanistic hydro-epidemiological model of liver fluke risk.

The majority of existing models for predicting disease risk in response to climate change are empirical. These models exploit correlations between historical data, rather than explicitly describing relationships between cause and response variables. Therefore, they are unsuitable for capturing impacts beyond historically observed variability and have limited ability to guide interventions. In this study, we integrate environmental and epidemiological processes into a new mechanistic model, taking the widespread parasitic disease of fasciolosis as an example. The model simulates environmental s

Combustion in the future: The importance of chemistry.

Combustion involves chemical reactions that are often highly exothermic. Combustion systems utilize the energy of chemical compounds released during this reactive process for transportation, to generate electric power, or to provide heat for various applications. Chemistry and combustion are interlinked in several ways. The outcome of a combustion process in terms of its energy and material balance, regarding the delivery of useful work as well as the generation of harmful emissions, depends sensitively on the molecular nature of the respective fuel. The design of efficient, low-emission combu

Disaster recovery funding: Enhanced understanding for improved outcomes.

The complexities of post-disaster recovery funding present significant challenges to state and local communities, particularly with the increase in frequency and intensity of disasters triggered by climate change. This paper explores the disaster recovery funding process for which there is limited existing research. A concurrent triangulation method was utilized as the strategy of inquiry. This mixed methods approach consisted of a content review of the related literature, an analysis of the New Jersey (NJ) Transit damage from Hurricane Sandy, a case study examining NJ Transit's unmet recovery

Regulation of the Emissions of the Greenhouse Gas Nitrous Oxide by the Soybean Endosymbiont Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens.

The greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) has strong potential to drive climate change. Soils are a major source of N2O, with microbial nitrification and denitrification being the primary processes involved in such emissions. The soybean endosymbiont Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens is a model microorganism to study denitrification, a process that depends on a set of reductases, encoded by the napEDABC, nirK, norCBQD, and nosRZDYFLX genes, which sequentially reduce nitrate (NO3-) to nitrite (NO2-), nitric oxide (NO), N2O, and dinitrogen (N2). In this bacterium, the regulatory network and environment

Algal Bloom Expansion Increases Cyanotoxin Risk in Food.

As advances in global transportation infrastructure make it possible for out of season foods to be available year-round, the need for assessing the risks associated with the food production and expanded distribution are even more important. Risks for foodborne illness are associated with contamination by bacteria, viruses, mold, parasites, natural and synthetic toxins, chemical residues, and conditions that lead to contamination. An increase in the popularity of natural alternatives to pharmaceuticals, herbal remedies and the desire for consuming "super foods" is leading to a change in the die

Net ecosystem productivity of grasslands: A chamber-based global database.

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of global grasslands-one of the largest and most variable components of the terrestrial carbon budget-provides critical insight into the magnitude and dynamics of the global carbon balance. Extensive field measurements have been derived from static-chamber techniques; however, these data have remained fragmented at individual sites or regions and have seldom been synthesized into a consistent global product. Here, chamber-based NEP measurements from 221 publications (1992-2023) in global grasslands were obtained, critically filtered, and condensed in a comprehe

Spatial and depth structuring predominate over temporal variation in Mediterranean climate grassland soil viral communities.

Viruses have the potential to influence microbial community structure and elemental cycling in soils, but it remains unclear how these communities are distributed across space and time, which can shape how they respond to environmental change and impact ecosystem processes. Mediterranean climate ecosystems, with their pronounced seasonal moisture fluctuations, offer an ideal system to examine viral biogeography. While previous studies hint at spatial structuring and moisture controls on viral communities, temporal responses to seasonal moisture shifts have not been comprehensively investigated
