We investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility of Trueperella pyogenes isolates from cattle and pigs diagnosed with septicemia at slaughter. The strains investigated in this study were found to be susceptible to ampicillin, cefazolin, gentamicin, and levofloxacin. Two previously healthy men who presented with hypotension, constitutional symptoms, and targetoid and discrete spotty erythematous plaques were diagnosed with toxic shock syndrome based on histopathological findings. Isolates of 390 Staphylococcus aureus were tested against 13 different antibiotics by a disc diffusion method as recommended by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). The patient responded promptly to therapy with iv clindamycin. We discuss the association of TSS with staphylococcal laryngotracheitis and the role of clindamycin in the treatment of TSS. To our knowledge, there are no previous reports of TSS complicating laryngotracheitis in adults.
