Craniofacial Asymmetric Patterns in Congenital Muscular Torticollis: A Computed Tomography-Based Visual Classification and Cluster Analysis With Clinical Implications.

Congenital muscular torticollis (CMT) is a common postural disorder in infants, frequently accompanied by craniofacial asymmetry. Despite its prevalence, detailed characterization of the 3-dimensional (3D) craniofacial morphology in CMT remains limited. This study aimed to explore the craniofacial patterns in children with CMT using 3D computed tomography scan reconstruction and assess their relationship with clinical classifications. Forty-four children aged 5 to 92 months were included in this study. Ten craniofacial parameters were visually assessed by multiple raters, including medical and

Social inclusion profiles in first episode psychosis and their links to social cognition and symptoms: A cluster analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Many young people with first episode psychosis (FEP) experience challenges in key areas of social inclusion, including housing, finances, employment or education, and social relationships. However, there is diversity in these challenges, and it is unclear how social inclusion relates to potentially modifiable treatment factors such as social cognition. Here we aimed to identify distinct social inclusion profiles using cluster analysis and examine their associations with social cognition and other clinical factors. METHODS: 145 young people (aged 15-25) who had experienced a FEP co…

Exploring Subtypes Based on Depression and Anxiety in Preoperative Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Two-Step Cluster Analysis.

Background Although a growing body of literature supports the importance of depression and anxiety, the assessment of these modifiable factors has not been considered in recent clinical practice guidelines for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This study aimed to classify patients with CTS into preoperative subgroups using cluster analysis based on the Japanese versions of the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Pain Anxiety Symptom Scale-20 (PASS-20). Outcome measures were also compared for each cluster. Methods Data from 65 patients with CTS were analyzed. The SDS and PASS-20 ps…

A machine learning approach using gait parameters to cluster TKA subjects into stable and unstable joints for discovery analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported joint instability after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is difficult to quantify objectively. Here, we apply machine learning to cluster TKA subjects using nine literature-proposed gait parameters as knee instability predictors and explore cluster reliability and consistency with self-organizing map (SOM) and k-means computation. METHODS: Subjects with TKA were retrieved from a data repository, supplemented by TKA patients with self-reported knee instability. Healthy elderly subjects, serving as control group for gait features, were added as well. All subjects have

Analysis of a logical regulatory network reveals how Fe-S cluster biogenesis is controlled in the face of stress.

Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are important cofactors conserved in all domains of life, yet their synthesis and stability are compromised in stressful conditions such as iron deprivation or oxidative stress. Two conserved machineries, Isc and Suf, assemble and transfer Fe-S clusters to client proteins. The model bacterium Escherichia coli possesses both Isc and Suf, and in this bacterium utilization of these machineries is under the control of a complex regulatory network. To better understand the dynamics behind Fe-S cluster biogenesis in E. coli, we here built a logical model describing its re

Analysis of Corynebacterium silvaticum genomes from Portugal reveals a single cluster and a clade suggested to produce diphtheria toxin.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium silvaticum is a pathogenic, gram-positive bacterial species that causes caseous lymphadenitis in wild boars, domestic pigs and roe deer in Western Europe. It can affect animal production and cause zoonosis. Genome analysis has suggested that one strain from Portugal and one from Austria could probably produce the diphtheria toxin (DT), which inhibits protein synthesis and can cause death. METHODS: To further investigate the species genetic diversity and probable production of DT by Portuguese strains, eight isolates from this country were sequenced and compared to

The psychological features of distinct somatic syndromes: A cluster analysis according to population-based somatic symptom profiles in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Functional somatic syndromes (such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome) are often comorbid. Whether these syndromes are distinct constructs and whether they have different psychological features are interesting questions. We perform a cluster analysis based on a nationwide survey in Taiwan to answer these questions. METHODS: A score of at least 5 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15, measuring somatic symptoms) indicated somatic syndromes and the data of 550 subjects were included. According to the gastrointestinal, pain-fatigue and cardio…

Diagnostic performance of classification trees and hematological functions in hematologic disorders: an application of multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several hematological indices have been already proposed to discriminate between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and β-thalassemia trait (βTT). This study compared the diagnostic performance of different hematological discrimination indices with decision trees and support vector machines, so as to discriminate IDA from βTT using multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis. In addition, decision trees were used to determine the diagnostic classification scheme of patients. METHODS: Consisting of 1178 patients with hypochromic microcytic anemia (708 patients with βTT and 470 patients…
