Verbal auditory agnosia in a patient with traumatic brain injury: A case report.

RATIONALE: Verbal auditory agnosia is the selective inability to recognize verbal sounds. Patients with this disorder lose the ability to understand language, write from dictation, and repeat words with reserved ability to identify nonverbal sounds. However, to the best of our knowledge, there was no report about verbal auditory agnosia in adult patient with traumatic brain injury. PATIENT CONCERNS: He was able to clearly distinguish between language and nonverbal sounds, and he did not have any difficulty in identifying the environmental sounds. However, he did not follow oral commands and c

Association Between Smoking and Cholinergic Basal Forebrain Volume in Healthy Aging and Prodromal and Dementia Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Smoking has been found associated with decreased cerebral volumes in healthy adults and in various neuropsychiatric disorders. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether chronic nicotine exposure through smoking is associated with reduced volume of cortically projecting cholinergic basal forebrain nuclei in healthy aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and dementia stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: We retrieved cross-sectional data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database including 179 cognitively normal elderly subjects, 270 subjects with e

[Predementia Alzheimer's disease. Benefits of early diagnosis].

Given population aging and the rise in the number of persons with Alzheimer's disease, measures that aim not only to delay but also to preve … iting for clinical manifestations to appear. Such an approach is essential in patients with greater cognitive reserve, in whom the lesions are usually more severe at diagnosis and treatment is less effective. To identify disease-modifying therapies to delay the onset of the clinical symptoms of Alzheimer's disease in cognitively intact persons at high risk, biomark …

Intrinsic capacity in Lewy body dementia: a review.

Frailty is a clinical syndrome characterized by diminished physiological reserves and increased vulnerability to stressors. While frailty has been largely studied in Alzheimer's disease, few study focused on Lewy body dementia (LBD). Beyond frailty, the World Health Organization recently highlights the concept of intrinsic capacity (IC), offering a promising framework for the early identification and intervention to mitigate the risk of frailty and disability in older adults. IC refers to an individual's physical and mental abilities (including five dimensions: sensory, psychology, locomotion,

Predictive Strategies to Reduce the Risk of Rehospitalization with a Focus on Frail Older Adults: A Narrative Review.

Frailty is a geriatric syndrome that has physical, cognitive, psychological, social, and environmental components and is characterized by a decrease in physiological reserves. Frailty is associated with several adverse health outcomes such as an increase in rehospitalization rates, falls, delirium, incontinence, dependency on daily living activities, morbidity, and mortality. Older adults may become frailer with each hospitalization; thus, it is beneficial to develop and implement preventive strategies. The present review aims to highlight the epidemiological importance of frailty in rehospita

Neural correlates of mindful disengagement from worry.

Uncontrollable worry is a hallmark of generalized anxiety disorder and a transdiagnostic feature of psychopathology. Mindfulness-based strategies show promise for treating worry, but it is unknown which specific strategies are most beneficial, and how these skills might operate on a neurobiological level. We recruited 40 participants with clinically significant worry to undergo functional magnetic resonance imaging while engaging in real-time, idiographic worry and instructed disengagement using two mindfulness strategies (focused attention, acceptance) and one comparison strategy (suppression

Normative data and clinical validity of verb and phonemic fluency tasks in Turkish-speaking older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Verbal fluency tasks are commonly used in clinical neuropsychology to assess language and executive functions. Verb fluency and phonemic fluency are sensitive to age-related cognitive decline and neurodegenerative conditions such as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, normative data for these tasks remain limited in Turkish-speaking populations, especially when culturally adapted phonemic fluency measures are employed. This study aimed to (a) provide normative data for verb fluency and Turkish-adapted K-A-S phonemic fluency tasks in healthy middle-

Evidence that anuran foot flagging displays function to exploit perceptual systems that mediate predator recognition.

Animal perceptual systems can shape the evolution of communication signals that help individuals negotiate social interactions. Here, we study this concept by exploring how conserved object recognition systems in anuran amphibians relate to evolutionary innovations in visual signaling behavior. We focus specifically on Bornean rock frogs (Staurois parvus), given that males of this species wave at each other with their hindlimbs (foot flag) to compete for access to mates. Past work shows that males who see this signal freeze as though they saw a predator; thus, we test whether perceptual system

The role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies on posttraumatic stress symptoms and alcohol use problems among individuals experiencing intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation is central to the etiology, course, and treatment of both posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and alcohol use disorder. Therefore, it is critical to investigate emotion regulation among populations susceptible to more severe and prolonged PTSS and alcohol use problems, such as those with intimate partner violence. Cognitive emotion regulation strategies are used to modify emotional information and include both presumed adaptive (i.e., acceptance, planning, positive refocusing, reappraisal, putting into perspective) and maladaptive (i.e., self-blame, other-blame,

Advancing the network theory of mental disorders: A computational model of panic disorder.

The network theory of psychopathology posits that mental disorders are systems of mutually reinforcing symptoms. This framework has proven highly generative but does not specify precisely how any specific mental disorder operates as such a system. Cognitive behavioral theories of mental disorders provide considerable insight into how these systems may operate. However, the development of cognitive behavioral theories has itself been stagnant in recent years. In this article, we advance both theoretical frameworks by developing a network theory of panic disorder rooted in cognitive behavioral t

Parasympathetic regulation and support from family and friends predict prosocial development in U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents.

Both parasympathetic nervous system regulation and receipt of social support from close relationships contribute to prosocial development, although few studies have examined their combined influences in adolescence and particularly within racially and ethnically minoritized populations. In this longitudinal study of 229 U.S. Mexican-origin adolescents (48% female-identifying), youths reported on receipt of social support from family and friends from 10 to 16 years, had their baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) measured at 17 years, reported their prosocial behavior and completed the Mi

Understanding nonliteral language abilities in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) is a genetic syndrome that affects cognitive, behavioral, and social development. Nonliteral language (NLL) comprehension has not been examined in children with NF1. This study examined NLL comprehension in children with NF1 and associated neuropsychological correlates. METHOD: NLL comprehension was examined in children with NF1 (n = 49) and typically developing (TD) controls (n = 27) aged 4-12 years using a novel NLL task. The task assessed comprehension of sarcasm, metaphor, simile, and literal language. Cognitive (Wechsler Scales Composites or the

Caffeine selectively mitigates cognitive deficits caused by sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation impairs a wide range of cognitive processes, but the precise mechanism underlying these deficits is unclear. One prominent proposal is that sleep deprivation impairs vigilant attention, and that impairments in vigilant attention cause impairments in cognitive tasks that require attention. Here, we test this theory by studying the effects of caffeine on visual vigilant attention and on placekeeping, a cognitive control process that plays a role in procedural performance, problem solving, and other higher order tasks. In the evening, participants (N = 276) completed a placekeep

Mindfulness training for emotion dysregulation in multiple sclerosis: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) report greater emotion dysregulation, which is associated with increased symptoms of depression and anxiety, and reduced quality of life. Given the transdiagnostic significance of emotion dysregulation, the current study was designed to assess the feasibility and treatment effects of mindfulness meditation in reducing emotion dysregulation for PwMS. METHOD: Sixty-one PwMS were randomized to 1 of 3 groups: 4-week mindfulness-based training (MBT), 4-week adaptive cognitive training (aCT), or a waitlist control group. Using self-report and behavio

Towards a Multidimensional Model of Neurocognitive Disorders (MOND Model): Integrating Evidence from a Critical Review into a Model for Future Research.

The main purpose of this work is to critically review the literature on neurocognitive disorders (ND) diagnosis. A critical review was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses focusing on ND diagnosis were included. The selected studies were critically analyzed and conceptually integrated to identify relevant dimensions for the diagnosis of ND. The review included 88 studies. Most studies focused on Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. The literature remained predominantly centred on isolated diagnostic domains, and important limitations were c

Maintaining and regaining episodic memory in Alzheimer disease: a circuit-based perspective.

Losing track of personal experiences is a defining feature of Alzheimer disease (AD), arising from the spread of AD pathology through the br … d hyperactive synaptic dysfunction, reduction of maladaptive processes and enhancement of brain and cognitive reserve. The circuit utilization framework is grounded in circuit-specific hypotheses that link the component processes of episodic memory to clinical symptoms of memory impairment and AD progression. Its overarching aim is to guide the development of inter …

Beyond Frailty Scores: Unmet Needs and Tailored Treatment Strategies in Patients With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Aged ≥ 80 Years.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in patients aged ≥ 80 years represents a growing and clinically distinct population that remains underrepresented in clinical trials. Consequently, treatment decisions are often extrapolated from younger or "fit" cohorts, limiting their applicability in routine practice. While targeted therapies (i.e., novel agents such as Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors [BTKi] and BCL2 inhibitors) have substantially improved outcomes compared with chemoimmunotherapy, their use in very elderly patients is associated with higher rates of treatment discontinuation, dose reduc

Vascular Instability and Neurological Morbidity in Sickle Cell Disease: An Integrative Framework.

It is well-established that patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at substantial risk of neurological complications, including overt and silent stroke, microstructural injury, and cognitive difficulties. Yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood, partly because findings have largely been considered in isolation. Here, we review mechanistic pathways for which there is accumulating evidence and propose an integrative systems-biology framework for understanding neurological risk. Drawing upon work from other vascular beds in SCD, as well as the wider stroke literature, we propo
