Sustained cognitive and functional effects of pro-cognitive interventions for bipolar disorder: A systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

A substantial proportion of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) experience considerable cognitive deficits. Existing systematic reviews have evaluated the efficacy of pro-cognitive interventions in BD, but have not established whether any cognitive benefits translate into functional improvements, with evidence for sustained functional effects remaining limited. A systematic search was conducted on MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO and Cochrane Library from inception until 21 May 2026. Eligible studies were randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in BD reporting cognitive or functional outcomes at three

Resistance Exercise-Induced Responses in Physiological Factors Linked with Cognitive Health.

The global population is aging at an unprecedented rate giving rise to a greater prevalence of age-related illnesses such as dementia and vascular disease. Dementia affects approximately 47 million individuals globally with projections of 130 million by the year 2050. Late-onset Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, accounting for approximately 75% of all cases and is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function, memory, and cerebral volume. The pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease is poorly understood; however, aging, genetics, and an individual's diet and li

INCOG 2.0 Guidelines for Cognitive Rehabilitation Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Part IV: Cognitive-Communication and Social Cognition Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Moderate to severe traumatic brain injury causes significant cognitive impairments, including impairments in social cognition, the ability to recognize others' emotions, and infer others' thoughts. These cognitive impairments can have profound negative effects on communication functions, resulting in a cognitive-communication disorder. Cognitive-communication disorders can significantly limit a person's ability to socialize, work, and study, and thus are critical targets for intervention. This article presents the updated INCOG 2.0 recommendations for management of cognitive-comm

Promoting Resilience in Youth through Mindfulness mEditation (PRYME): Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of mindfulness training as add-on to care-as-usual on internalizing problems, mental illness development, and associated brain and cognitive processes in help-seeking youth.

BACKGROUND: Internalizing problems, such as worrying, anxiety and low mood, are increasingly common in youth and may constitute an early stage of mental illness development. There is thus an urgent need for effective measures to address mental health complaints as they develop and to prevent progression into more serious mental illness. Enhanced understanding of early-stage mental illness development, associated cognitive and brain processes, and their amenability to early intervention is crucial to this effort. Mindfulness-based interventions offer an accessible intervention option with demon

Evaluating the effects of inhibitory control training as a universal prevention strategy for internalizing complaints in middle childhood.

Internalizing complaints or inwardly directed psychological difficulties such as anxiety, worry and low mood can significantly affect childr … cess itself. These findings highlight important considerations regarding the design and delivery of cognitive training interventions to universal samples, including the calibration of task demands and the conditions required to support cognitive transfer. Future research should investigate whether stronger transfer effects can be achieved through adaptive training t …

A meta-analysis suggests that tACS improves cognition in healthy, aging, and psychiatric populations.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has attracted interest as a technique for causal investigations into how rhythmic fluctuations in brain neural activity influence cognition and for promoting cognitive rehabilitation. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of tACS on cognitive function across 102 published studies, which included 2893 individuals in healthy, aging, and neuropsychiatric populations. A total of 304 effects were extracted from these 102 studies. We found modest to moderate improvements in cognitive function with tACS treatment that wer

Assessment and Management of Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment.

Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is common and multifactorial in nature with the cancer itself, various treatment modalities, as well as socioenvironmental, biobehavioral, and lifestyle factors all potentially contributing to cognitive impairment in cancer survivors. Estimates of CRCI prevalence vary widely depending on cancer type and the cognitive assessment tools used, but range from 25% to 75%. CRCI typically affects memory, processing speed, attention, and executive function. Diagnosis can be challenging because of a poor association between self-reported cognitive symptoms and

Effects of resistance exercise on cognitive function, neurotrophic factors, brain structure, and brain function in older adults: A narrative review.

Cognitive decline is age-specific or related to dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD), which poses great concern to older adults. Exercise contributes to cognitive gains, with aerobic exercise (AE) being the most commonly studied type. However, other types, such as resistance exercise (RE), have received less attention in exercise-cognition research. This narrative review aims to synthesize evidence addressing the effects of RE, including the influence of its various parameters on cognitive function in older adults. It also examines the adaptations of neurotrophic factors, brain structure, and

Working Memory Training in Norwegian Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) Show Minimal Evidence of Near and No Far Transfer Effects.

In children with cerebral palsy (CP), learning disabilities are well documented, and impairments in executive functions, such as attention, inhibition, shifting and working memory, represent significant burdens on patients, their families and the society. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether Cogmed RM working memory training could improve working memory in children with CP and investigate whether increased working memory capacity would generalize to other cognitive functions. Twenty-eight children completed the training and the results were compared to a waitlist control group (n = 32

The role of cognitive elements plays in physical activity interventions among individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: A systematic review of brain evidence.

Physical activity (PA) with cognitive elements has received significant attention in recent years because it has been shown to have a large effect on increasing executive function in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the mechanisms underpinning these effects are poorly understood. Therefore, this study systematically reviewed and summarized the brain outcomes of individuals with ADHD who completed either traditional intervention—PA alone, cognitive training (CT)-alone—or their combination in two forms—dual task of CT and PA (CT-PA) and cognitive-engaged…

Dorsolateral Prefrontal Functional Connectivity Predicts Working Memory Training Gains.

Background: Normal aging is associated with working memory decline. A decrease in working memory performance is associated with age-related changes in functional activation patterns in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Cognitive training can improve cognitive performance in healthy older adults. We implemented a cognitive training study to assess determinants of generalization of training gains to untrained tasks, a key indicator for the effectiveness of cognitive training. We aimed to investigate the association of resting-state functional connectivity (FC) of DLPFC with working mem…
