BACKGROUND: The term "mesenteric inflammatory veno-occlusive disease (MIVOD)" is used to describe an ischemic injury resulting from phlebitis or venulitis that affects the bowel or mesentery in the absence of arteritis. MIVOD is difficult to diagnose because of its rarity and frequent confusion with other diseases. The incidence and etiology of MIVOD remain unclear; only a few cases have been reported. The aim of this study was to describe the technique and report our single center experience of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) open surgical repair over the last 17 years. From 1993 to 2010, a total of 4347 open surgical procedures for repair of AAA were performed in our center. The details of 3857 (88.7%) patients undergoing infrarenal AAA open repair were analyzed; mean age at the time of surgery was 71.8 years ranging from 58 to 89 years. The beneficial effects of open surgical abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair via a left retroperitoneal approach have been established. We compared the short-term outcome of infrarenal AAA repair via an endovascular approach with that of an open retroperitoneal approach. From October 2001 to April 2003, patients with infrarenal AAA >5 cm were offered repair via an endovascular approach (group I) with a variety of industry-made stent grafts or with an open retroperitoneal surgical approach (group II). Data were prospectively collected in the vascular registry and complications were analyzed.
