Sera from patients with giant cell arteritis and/or polymyalgia rheumatica have been found to contain increased levels of circulating immune complexes (IC). Results with the polyethyleneglycol precipitation complement consumption (PEG-CC) assay have been correlated with disease activity. 44% of samples from an active untreated group (21 patients) had increased levels of ICs compared with 23% from an inactive treated group (49 patients). Further analysis of circulating ICs was performed by 125I-Clq binding, the PEG-C4 test, and 125I-conglutinin binding assays. Although we did not find a high co

Q fever is endemic throughout much of Australia and is most frequently seen in abattoir workers, farmers and veterinarians. Initially, there is a febrile, influenza-like illness. The infection is usually self-limited within several weeks, but rarely patients may develop infective endocarditis or hepatitis. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by finding risings titres of antibodies specific for C. burneti. The infection is not very responsive to treatment, but if tetracycline is administered early, the duration of fever is shortened.

A 57-year-old man with left T8-9 cutaneous Herpes Zoster lesions and subsequent development of flaccid paralysis of both lower limbs is reported. Viral studies strongly supported a diagnosis of Herpes Zoster. No other cause for the paralysis was found. The time interval between the cutaneous lesions and the motor weakness, the clinical course and good recovery suggest a causal relationship. The dermatomal and myotomal dissociation has been well-documented on the ipsilateral side, but involvement of the contralateral side is rare. This would appear to be unusual in that there was bilateral weak
