Dental restorative procedures remain a cornerstone of dental practice, and for many decades, dental amalgam was the most frequently employed material. However, its use is declining, mainly driven by its poor aesthetics and by the development of tooth-coloured adhesive materials. Furthermore, the Minamata Convention agreed on a phase-down on the use of dental amalgam. This concise review is based on a FDI Policy Statement which provides guidance on the selection of direct restorative materials as alternatives to amalgam. The Policy Statement was informed by current literature, identified mainly

Pit and fissure sealants play an essential role in preventive dentistry. This study evaluates the microleakage levels of a new and colored flowable composite applied as a sealant after three preparation techniques. A total of 24 non-carious mandibular permanent molars with deep pits and fissures were included in the study. Pit and fissures were prepared with 37% phosphoric acid, tungsten carbide bur and fissurotomy burs (SS WHITE Dental, New Jersey, USA) using conventional, enameloplasty and fissurotomy techniques. All samples were thermocycled following the placement of Rainbow Flow (PPH CERK

The development of high-performance flame-retardant materials with favorable thermal insulation properties is crucial for mitigating fire hazards and energy consumption in applications such as packaging and modern buildings. In this study, flame-retardant microcapsules (VUMF-APP) were synthesized via microencapsulation and electrostatic self-assembly with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as the core, urea-melamine-formaldehyde (UMF) resin as the shell, and thermoelectric-responsive VO2 (M) as the functional outer layer. These microcapsules were incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) to enhance the com

INTRODUCTION: The interaction of soft tissues with resin-based restorations is not well understood. Understanding such interplay is essential when restoring root surface lesions close to the gingiva as it can impact the clinical outcome. This study examined cellular interactions with a novel resin-based material and compared these with contemporary materials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) (Fuji II), resin composites (G-aenial/Bioactiva) and a novel strontium-substituted bioglass (Sr-BG) filled resin were assessed. A range of bulk and leachate characterisations wer

The diffusion of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) from light cured bonding resin-composite resin restorations through human carious dentin was investigated. Extracted human molar teeth with different degrees of caries were obtained from consenting donors. Teeth were classified into three groups according to caries severity (mild, moderate and severe) using subjective criteria. The outer carious lesions were then removed guided by a proprietary caries detector dye. Teeth with exposure of the pulp space after caries removal were excluded from the s

Functionalized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers were used in the present investigation to enhance the fracture behavior of carbon epoxy composite in order to prevent delamination if any crack propagates in the resin rich area. The main intent of this investigation was to analyze the efficiency of PAN nanofiber as a reinforcing agent for the carbon fiber-based epoxy structural composite. The composites were fabricated with stacked unidirectional carbon fibers and the PAN powder was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and then used as reinforcement. The fabricated composites' fract

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fractures of anterior teeth are a highly prevalent form of dental trauma. Among the various treatment options, reattachment of the fractured part to the remaining tooth has a lot of advantages. The aim of this study was to compare different bevel preparation techniques when reattaching fractured fragments to maxillary central incisors.
METHODS: This study was performed on 52 maxillary central incisors that were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups and 1 control group. In the control group, the repair was done by attaching the fractured fragment using bonding and compos

OBJECTIVES: There is concern that the integrity of fiberglass dental posts may be affected by chairside trimming during treatment. We hypothesize that hard X-ray methods of phase contrast-enhanced micro-CT (PCE-CT) and synchrotron based X-ray refraction (SXRR) can reliably identify and help characterize the extent of damage.
METHODS: Fiberglass posts were imaged both as manufactured and following trimming with a diamond bur. Each of the posts was imaged by SXRR and by PCE-CT. Datasets from PCE-CT were used to visualize and quantify 2D and 3D morphological characteristics of intact and of dama
