Patients with chronic migraine (CM) have high frequence of psychiatric comorbidity or psychological distress. The presence of depression, anxiety, panic or obsessive disorders in these patients contributes to poor quality of life and can influence prognosis and treatment. A systematic investigation of psychiatric comorbidity is needed in patients with CM especially in those with medication overuse (MO), in order to reach a more comprehensive clinical management. We assessed the psychological profile of 50 patients, 40 women and 10 men suffering from CM with MO. The Spectrum Project, a compleme

Personality disorders (PDs) in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) are conceptualized as distinct clinical syndromes. However, debate persists about the clinical utility of this categorical model, with many researchers supporting a dimensional model that focuses on pathological personality traits and personality dysfunction. This model was published in Section III of DSM-5 and named the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). This study evaluated the AMPD by examining relationships between traits and dysfunction with traditional categorical PD construct

INTRODUCTION: Type 1 myotonic dystrophy (MD-1) or Steinert disease is a multisystemic progressive disorder. Studies have shown cognitive deficits, depressive symptoms and a high incidence of anxiety personality traits that compromise both the functionality and the quality of life of these patients.
AIM: To describe the cognitive and psychopathological profile of a sample of patients with the adult variant of MD-1.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A sample of 27 patients diagnosed with MD-1 was selected from those being followed up in the neurology service of the Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra. Eligib

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting approximately 5-8% of females in this group. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism, abnormal periods (rare periods or amenorrhea) and polycystic ovaries visualized through ultrasonography. The etiopathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome has not been elucidated in detail. There are numerous hypotheses on this subject which tend to complement one another. The most widely recognized hypothesis is that the development of PCOS is due to insulin resistance and hyperinsulinem

BACKGROUND: Abnormal performance monitoring is a possible transdiagnostic marker of psychopathology. Research on neural indices of performance monitoring, including the error-related negativity (ERN), typically examines group and interindividual (between-person) differences in mean/average scores. Intraindividual (within-person) variability in activity captures the capacity to dynamically adjust from moment to moment, and excessive variability appears maladaptive. Intraindividual variability in ERN represents a unique and largely unexamined dimension that might impact functioning. We tested wh

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in adults is challenging due to its heterogeneity and symptom overlap with other conditions. Making an accurate diagnosis can be difficult and overwhelming but is vital for proper accommodations and interventions while avoiding unproductive or harmful treatments.
AREAS COVERED: The authors have based their review on a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar to identify relevant recommendations, diagnostic tools, and common differential diagnoses for adults with ASD. A clinical framework is provided base

The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) plays a pivotal role in integrating sensory, emotional, and cognitive signals to support flexible, goal-directed behavior. This review synthesizes converging evidence from lesion studies, neuroimaging, intracranial recordings and stimulations to elucidate the OFC's contribution to emotional regulation, social behavior, and value-based decision making. Lesions in the OFC are associated with affective disturbances, social disinhibition, and impaired behavioral adaptation to feedback. The OFC evaluates the hedonic valence of stimuli across sensory modalities-visual,

Background: In the literature, female anorgasmia (AO) is closely related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), but no publication has explored the role of individual obsessive traits that may also be typical of other disorders, assuming that repetitive thoughts and compulsions must necessarily correspond to an obsessive-type neurotic profile. It is worth investigating and assessing the specific weight of other morbid conditions involved, beyond OCD. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted during 2022-2023 by selecting 208 Italian clinical patients from private databases. They submitt

We aim to systematically review and meta-analyze the effectiveness and safety of psychedelics [psilocybin, ayahuasca (active component DMT), LSD and MDMA] in treating symptoms of various mental disorders. Web of Science, Embase, EBSCO, and PubMed were searched up to February 2024 and 126 articles were finally included. Results showed that psilocybin has the largest number of articles on treating mood disorders (N = 28), followed by ayahuasca (N = 7) and LSD (N = 6). Overall, psychedelics have therapeutic effects on mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Specifically, psilocybin (Hedg

BACKGROUND: Levels of mental health stigma experienced can vary as a function of the presenting mental health problem (e.g. diagnosis and symptoms). However, these studies are limited because they exclusively use pairwise comparisons. A more comprehensive examination of diagnosis-specific stigma is needed.
AIMS: The aim of our study was to determine how levels of mental health stigma vary in relation to a number of psychiatric diagnoses, and identify what attributions predict levels of diagnosis-specific stigma.
METHOD: We conducted an online survey with members of the public. Participants w

Grazing is a clinically relevant eating behaviour, especially when it presents with a sense of loss of control (compulsive grazing). There is evidence that other disordered eating patterns are associated with problematic substance use and impulsivity-related conditions, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This overlap contributes to higher psychopathology and treatment complications. Less is known about grazing, and most information originates in high-income countries. Hence, we sought to investigate relationships between grazing, tobacco and alcohol use, ADHD, and impulsi

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) frequently co-occurs with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the prevalence and clinical correlates of this comorbidity remain incompletely understood.
METHODS: We examined a clinical sample of 603 patients with a primary diagnosis of OCD, of whom 149 (24.7%) presented with comorbid ASD. Sociodemographic variables, clinical characteristics, comorbidities, and obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions were compared between patients with and without ASD.
RESULTS: Patients with OCD + ASD reported an earlier onset of both obsessive-compulsive sympto

BACKGROUND: Different craving typologies (i.e., reward, relief, obsessive) have been identified in alcohol use disorder (AUD) but have been less investigated in specific populations like AUD patients with polysubstance use (PSU). The role of dysfunctional personality traits and reward pathways has been reported in both AUD and PSU. We hypothesized that patients with AUD-PSU might show a prevalent reward craving, alongside specific sociodemographic, clinical, and personality features, and aimed at investigating differences in 423 severe AUD outpatients with and without PSU.

Systematic knowledge about patient characteristics that predict the duration of long-term psychotherapy is largely absent. We examined predictors of attrition, retention, and duration of long-term dynamic psychotherapy to delineate the naturalistic history of psychotherapy, specifically focusing on childhood emotional neglect and abuse, adult diagnosis, personality, and functioning as predictors. Fifty-three adults with depressive, anxiety, and/or personality disorders (PDs) were offered at least 3 years of long-term dynamic psychotherapy. The median duration of therapy for the study group was

In the management of patients it is often important to combine physical and psychotherapeutic treatment methods according to the individual patient's needs. In analytically oriented psychotherapy more attention can usefully be paid to the patient's bodily attitudes and behavior than has been customary. A psychosomatic approach which can be applied to the psychotherapeutic process is described, and theoretical considerations are discussed.

A large proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) respond unsatisfactorily to pharmacological and psychological treatments. An alternative novel treatment for these patients is repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). This study aimed to investigate the underlying neural mechanism of rTMS treatment in OCD patients. A total of 37 patients with OCD were randomized to receive real or sham 1-Hz rTMS (14 days, 30 min/day) over the right pre-supplementary motor area (preSMA). Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected before and after rT

UNLABELLED: Theory/calculation: Movement disorders such as disturbances of coordination, clumsiness, and hand-related stereotypies are a frequent phenomenon in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Obsessive-compulsive symptoms are also common in persons with ID. Our aim was to investigate hand motor dysfunction in persons with ID with and without OCD, using a digitizing tablet and the kinematic analysis of handwriting and drawing movements.
METHODS: We examinedthe hand motor performance of 23 individuals (12 males, 11 females, 42.6 ± 13.7 years old) with ID of heterogeneous aetiol

We here review Babylonian descriptions of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, stroke, psychoses, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, psychopathic behaviour, depression and anxiety. Most of these accounts date from the first Babylonian dynasty of the first half of the second millennium BC, within a millennium and a half of the origin of writing. The Babylonians were remarkably acute and objective observers of medical disorders and human behaviour. Their detailed descriptions are surprisingly similar to modern 19th and 20th century AD textbook accounts, with the excep
