INTRODUCTION: Recent nationally representative data documenting event-level condom use have included samples that are predominantly heterosexual, resulting in limited information on rates of condom use for penile-anal intercourse (PAI) among men who have sex with men (MSM).
AIM: This study sought to document the demographic and event-specific situational factors associated with condom use during most recent PAI among MSM.
METHODS: Data were collected via an Internet survey from 14,750 MSM (ages 18-87 years) from 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Measures in

Cervical cancer is an infection-related cancer caused primarily by the human papilloma virus. Sexual behavior is a primary risk factor for contracting the genital type of the HPV. While studies have shown that vertical transmission, horizontal transmission, and transmission of the HPV following contact with infected secretions without sexual intercourse are possible, they are not common. The incidence of cervical cancer in the Caribbean is the third highest in the world. This report describes the outcomes of a cross-sectional, mixed methods, exploratory study undertaken to examine questions an

OBJECTIVES: We examined correlates of condom use among a national random probability sample of sexually experienced young adults aged 15 to 24 years (n = 7686) in South Africa.
METHODS: Using data from the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit National Youth Survey, we conducted gender-stratified bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to determine predictors of whether respondents had used a condom during their most recent sexual intercourse.
RESULTS: Condom use at sexual debut and talking with one's first sexual partner about condoms were the most significant predictors…

Condom use remains important for sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention. This analysis examined the prevalence of problems with condoms among 1,152 participants who completed a supplemental questionnaire as part of Project RESPECT, a counseling intervention trial conducted at five publicly funded STD clinics between 1993 and 1997. Altogether, 336 participants (41%, 95% confidence interval: 38, 45) reporting condom use indicated that condoms broke, slipped off, leaked, or were not used throughout intercourse in the previous 3 months. Correspondingly, 8.9% (95% confidence interval: 7.0, 9…

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the long-term impact of condom promotion programmes for vaginal and oral sex among female brothel-based sex workers in Singapore.
DESIGN: A pre-test/post-test comparison group followed by a time series design was used to compare trends in condom use for vaginal sex and cervical gonorrhoea incidence from 1990 to 2002 across cross-sectional samples of sex workers before and after programme implementation in 1995. The subsequent condom promotion programme for oral sex was evaluated using the interrupted time series with a retrospective pre-test to post-test matched contro

BACKGROUND: Prostitution is the most important source of transmission of AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases in Asia. We developed and evaluated the sustainability of an intervention to increase condom use and reduce gonorrhea among brothel-based sex workers in Singapore. The intervention focused on developing sex workers' negotiation skills, educating clients, and mobilizing support from peers and health staff in promoting condom use.
METHODS: A pretest-posttest design with one intervention site (n = 124) and another comparable control site (n = 122) was maintained for 5 months followed b

Alcohol use increases the likelihood of condomless sex, which is prevalent among college students and associated with detrimental health consequences. Both theoretical and empirical evidence have suggested that the perceived effects of alcohol on sex (i.e. sex-related alcohol expectancies [AE]) play a role in the association between alcohol and condomless sex; however, this association among college students has been inconsistent. Therefore, this focus group study aimed to provide in-depth evidence regarding the sex- and condom use-related AE college men held, and how those AE might influence

BACKGROUND: Low-cost and scalable behavioural interventions to prevent HIV among young people in Africa are needed. As access to smartphones grows, digital interventions will become increasingly viable. We assessed the efficacy of an interactive narrative-based smartphone game (Tumaini) designed to increase age and condom use at first sex.
METHODS: In this two-arm, non-blinded, individually randomised trial, participants aged 12-14 years were recruited at community level in Kisumu, Kenya. Sex-stratified block randomisation (1:1; block size of 10) was undertaken by study staff with no contact

INTRODUCTION: Consensual sexual choking has become prevalent among young United States (US) adults. In sex between women and men, women are overwhelmingly the ones choked, perhaps reproducing traditional heteronormative power dynamics. No research has examined the relationship between being choked during consensual sex and the use of external condoms and other contraceptives.
METHODS: We administered a cross-sectional campus-representative survey to 4989 undergraduate students at a large public Midwestern US university.
RESULTS: Half of respondents (n = 1803) had ever been choked during sex.…

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) are the most important bridge population for HIV transmission. Condom use plays an important role for HIV infection. However the predictors for condom ues with females are not well characterized.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Participants were enrolled by four community-based organizations (CBOs) by offline (bathrooms, bars), and online (gay applications, chat room) from April to December 2019. Electronic questionnare was fulfilled after a face-to-face training led by CBOs. We identified predictors of inconsistent condom use

BACKGROUND: Perceiving a personal risk for HIV infection is considered important for engaging in HIV prevention behaviour and often targeted in HIV prevention interventions. However, there is limited evidence for assumed causal relationships between risk perception and prevention behaviour and the degree to which change in behaviour is attributable to change in risk perception is poorly understood. This study examines longitudinal relationships between changes in HIV risk perception and in condom use and the public health importance of changing risk perception.

BACKGROUND: Low-fee female sex workers (FSW) lack power to effectively negotiate male condom use with clients. Female condoms (FCs) may provide an alternative strategy. This study was conducted to assess the acceptability of FC use among low-fee FSWs, and to identify appropriate candidates for future FC promotion.
METHODS: A one-month follow-up study was conducted. At entry into the study, eligible participants completed a baseline questionnaire and were given 10 FCs. At the one-month follow up encounter, the number of used FC packages were counted and each participant completed a follow-up q…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors within the social-ecological framework associated with most or moderately effective contraception, condom and dual method use at last coitus among young, HIV-infected women in Atlanta.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted from November, 2013 until August, 2015 at the Grady Infectious Disease Clinic in Atlanta, Georgia. We recruited perinatally and horizontally HIV-infected women of ages 14-30 years to complete an audio computer-assisted self-interview. We evaluated factors within a social-ecological framework associated with most or moderately effe
