Incidence of adenoviral and chlamydial coinfection in acute follicular conjunctivitis.

PURPOSE/METHODS: After we studied a case of chlamydial and adenoviral coinfection in a 20-year-old woman, we determined the incidence of chlamydial infection in patients with acute adenoviral conjunctivitis. In a randomized retrospective study, we evaluated 100 specimens of patients with culture-proven adenoviral conjunctivitis. RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Three of 100 (3%) specimens tested positive for chlamydial DNA using polymerase chain reaction. Adenoviral and chlamydial coinfection is rare, yet should be considered in patients with prolonged follicular keratoconjunctivitis.

Bartonella henselae associated with Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome.

Bartonella henselae was recovered from the conjunctival scraping of a 38-year-old woman who presented with a 2-week history of tender preauricular lymphadenopathy and a 1-day history of a red left eye. Dry adherent colonies were observed on agar plates at 21 days of incubation, and the isolate was identified through conventional and molecular tests. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of a specific region of the 16S rRNA gene and confirmation by a separate PCR reaction with hybridization of the product with a B. henselae-specific probe confirmed the isolate as B. henselae. This is th

Capnocytophaga ochracea chronic blepharoconjunctivitis.

A 70-year-old woman presented with a 10-month history of chronic blepharoconjunctivitis that had been unresponsive to multiple methods of treatment. The patient was not immunocompromised and had no history of corneal disease, ocular trauma, or lacrimal duct obstruction. Gram and Giemsa staining of conjunctival smears resulted in visualization of slender, fusiform bacilli. Culture of conjunctival scrapings led to the recovery of a fastidious isolate identified as Capnocytophaga ochracea. The same microorganism was also recovered from cultures of the patient's gingiva. The blepharoconjunctivitis

Bacteria in surface infections of neonates.

A bacteriological work on surface infections was done among live births (study group I) and neonates admitted in hospital (study group II). Out of 134 cases of conjunctivitis in group I Gram-negative bacilli predominated (48.5%) with Escherichia coli accounting for 29 (14.9%) cases, Klebsiella species 15 (11.2%) cases, Citrobacter freundii 3 (2.2%) cases, Pseudomons aeruginosa 18 (13.4%) cases and Aeromonas hydrophila 3 (2.2%) amongst pure isolates (73.9%). Gonococcus was noted in 2 (1.5%) cases. In group II, 41.7% were Staphylococcus aureus in pure growth (75%), compared to only 9.0% in group

Chlamydia-specific lymphocytes in conjunctiva during ocular infection: limiting dilution analysis.

The immunopathogenesis of ocular infection with Chlamydia trachomatis can be investigated in the cynomolgus monkey model of trachoma. During ocular infection, both follicles (germinal centers) containing primarily B lymphocytes and a heavy perifollicular T cell infiltrate are observed. Limiting dilution analyses were performed on conjunctival and peripheral blood lymphocytes to quantify the proportion of antigen-specific cells elicited by ocular C. trachomatis infection. The frequencies of chlamydia-specific cells were 10-100 times higher in conjunctiva than in peripheral blood. Similar freque

Spatially Organized DNA-Templated Silver Nanoclusters as Potent Antimicrobial Agents for ESKAPE Infections.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria cause more than one million deaths annually worldwide. The rapid evolution and horizontal gene transfer among pathogens frequently render newly developed antibiotics ineffective shortly after their introduction, underscoring the urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. Nanoscale silver is well known for its innate antimicrobial activity but typically requires high concentrations for efficacy that causes toxicities and limits broader clinical applications. To overcome these limitations, we introduce programmable, self-assembling DNA scaffolds that templa

Efficacy of a bacterial fluorescence imaging device in an outpatient wound care clinic: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Subsurface bacterial burden can be missed during standard wound examination protocols. The real-time bacterial fluorescence imaging device, MolecuLight i:X, visualises the presence of potentially harmful levels of bacteria through endogenous autofluorescence, without the need for contrast agents or contact with the patient. The intended use of the imaging device is to assist with the management of patients with wounds by enabling real-time visualisation of potentially harmful bacteria. The aim of this study was to establish the accuracy of the wound imaging device at detecting patho

Immune mechanisms and the impact of the disrupted lung microbiome in chronic bacterial lung infection and bronchiectasis.

Recent studies analysing immunogenetics and immune mechanisms controlling susceptibility to chronic bacterial infection in bronchiectasis implicate dysregulated immunity in conjunction with chronic bacterial infection. Bronchiectasis is a structural pathological end-point with many causes and disease associations. In about half of cases it is termed idiopathic, because it is of unknown aetiology. Bronchiectasis is proposed to result from a 'vicious cycle' of chronic bacterial infection and dysregulated inflammation. Paradoxically, both immune deficiency and excess immunity, either in the form

Transcriptome of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi within macrophages revealed through the selective capture of transcribed sequences.

The cDNA obtained by selective capture of transcribed sequences is a complex mixture that can be used in conjunction with microarrays to determine global gene expression by a pathogen during infection. We used this method to study genes expressed by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, the etiological agent of typhoid fever, within human macrophages. Global expression profiles of Typhi grown in vitro and within macrophages at different time points were obtained and compared. Known virulence factors, such as the SPI-1- and SPI-2-encoded type III secretion systems, were found to be expressed as pr

Myocardial infarction due to non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis in a patient with oligodendroglioma: an unusual presentation and diagnostic challenge-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) represents a manifestation of thrombotic endocarditis characterized by the formation of thrombus on the heart valve leaflet. While neurological events are the most frequent initial presentation of NBTE, myocardial infarction also stands out as a major clinical manifestation among NBTE patients. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old female with no history of cardiovascular disease or episodes of chest pain suffered a left main trunk ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) after craniotomy for the treatment of oligodendroglioma. Investigating the in situ degradation of atrazine in groundwater.

This study focused on whether or not atrazine could be degraded by indigenous groundwater bacteria as part of an in situ remediation approach. Groundwater was taken from an unconfined middle upper chalk site where concentrations of atrazine and nitrate were typically in the ranges 0.02-0.2 microg litre-1 and 11.6-25.1 mg NO3-N litre-1 respectively. Sacrificial batch studies were performed using this groundwater spiked with atrazine at a concentration of 10 microg litre-1 in conjunction with a minimal mineral salts liquid (Glu-MMSL) medium which contained glucose as the sole carbon source. Trea

The molecular network in bacteria responsible for the mitigation of salinity stress.

The World’s major abiotic stress is salinity stress, which affects over 833 million hectares of agricultural lands and risks food security by reducing crop yields and interfering with plant physiological systems. It has been predicted that salinity stress will affect about 50% of crops by 2050. Through a variety of molecular mechanisms, PGPR (plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) have evolved as bioinoculants that enhance plant tolerance to salinity stress. Bacterial molecular mechanisms include the biosynthesis of suitable key osmolytes, ion transporters, modulation of hormones via ACC deamin

Interleukin-6 overexpression and elevated granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio indicate hepatic stress in experimental group a Streptococcus sepsis.

Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a pathogen that is capable of colonizing various infection sites and can potentially elicit an inadequate immune response that will lead to sepsis. The processes underlying this misdirected immune reaction remain poorly understood, and reliable biomarkers for indicating impending organ failure during sepsis are still missing. The present study aims to identify parameters that can predict the onset of end-organ damage in the course of sepsis. To that extent, we investigated key aspects of the immune response in early-phase sepsis following infection of different t

LC-MS metabolomics and lipidomics in cerebrospinal fluid from viral and bacterial CNS infections: a review.

There is compelling evidence that a dysregulated immune inflammatory response in neuroinfectious diseases results in modifications in metabolic processes and altered metabolites, directly or indirectly influencing lipid metabolism within the central nervous system (CNS). The challenges in differential diagnosis and the provision of effective treatment in many neuroinfectious diseases are, in part, due to limited understanding of the pathophysiology underlying the disease. Although there are numerous metabolomics studies, there remains a deficit in neurolipidomics research to provide a comprehe

Severe radiation dermatitis is related to Staphylococcus aureus.

Acute radiation dermatitis commonly occurs following local radiation therapy for various cancers and, when severe, may necessitate disruption of treatment. Intense inflammatory reaction may result in a breakdown of the skin's barrier function and accompanying bacterial colonization. Bacterial superantigens may exacerbate inflammation through activation of T-cells and subsequent cytokine release. We report six cases of severe radiation dermatitis in cancer patients. Four of the six grew pathogenic bacteria, and three had psoriasiform or eczematous reactions at distant sites. Both the radiation
