Structural integrity of corpus callosum in patients with migraine: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

The aim of this study was to compare structural changes of corpus callosum (CC), which is the largest collection of white matter in the brain, among migraineurs and healthy controls (HC). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) method which provides information about microscopic organization of the cell, especially white matter was used for this purpose. Fifty-one patients who were diagnosed with migraine and 44 age- and sex-matched HC were included in the study. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were noted. Fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC…

Corpus Callosum Infarct in the Background of Varicella-Zoster Infection: A Report of a Rare Case.

Infarctions of the corpus callosum are rare due to a rich blood supply. Corpus callosum derives its blood supply from four vessels from the anterior and posterior circulation and for this reason, they have a rare, atypical presentation. There is scarce literature regarding this pathology. Corpus callosum infarcts usually present with non-specific signs and symptoms. Here, we describe a case of corpus callosum infarction in a 5-year-old boy who was a known case of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. He presented with disseminated varicella infection and developed tonic-clonic seizures. MRI brain was…

Social Inferences in Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum and Autism: Semantic Analysis and Topic Modeling.

Impoverished capacity for social inference is one of several symptoms that are common to both agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This research compared the ability of 14 adults with AgCC, 13 high-functioning adults with ASD and 14 neurotypical controls to accurately attribute social meaning to the interactions of animated triangles. Descriptions of the animations were analyzed in three ways: subjective ratings, Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count, and topic modeling (Latent Dirichlet Allocation). Although subjective ratings indicated that all groups made s…

Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum in children: Etiology, clinical and radiological features, and prognosis.

OBJECTIVES: Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCCs) are secondary lesions associated with entities like infection manifested by restricted diffusion on diffusion-weighted cranial magnetic resonance imaging. Our objectives are to evaluate the clinic-radiological spectrum of pediatric patients with cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CC). METHODS: Children (0-18 years) admitted between February 2017 and May 2020 with splenial lesions showing diffusion restriction on MRI, either isolated or within involvement of other parts of the brain, were included retrospectively. The primary…

Increased Notching of the Corpus Callosum in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: A Callosal Misunderstanding?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In the medicolegal literature, notching of the corpus callosum has been reported to be associated with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Our purpose was to analyze the prevalence of notching of the corpus callosum in a fetal alcohol spectrum disorders group and a healthy population to determine whether notching occurs with increased frequency in the fetal alcohol spectrum disorders population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a multicenter search for cases of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and included all patients who had a sagittal T1-weighted brain MR imaging. …

Anterior and posterior commissures in agenesis of the corpus callosum: Alternative pathways for attention processes?

Developmental absence (agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital brain malformation resulting from disruption of corpus callosum formation, a structure that is crucial for the transfer and integration of information, including attention processes, across the brain. This study aimed to investigate previously proposed candidates for alternative inter-hemispheric pathways in AgCC by examining (1) white matter volume and microstructure of the anterior and posterior commissures in children with AgCC compared to typically developing controls (TDC), and (2) in children with AgCC, examin…

Prevalence and associated factors for agenesis of corpus callosum in Emilia Romagna (1981-2015).

Agenesis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum (ACC and HCC) are heterogeneous group with a large variation in published prevalence based on few population based studies. The aim of this work is to describe prevalence, associated factors and other malformations present in cases with either agenesis or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, using a population-based database of all malformations diagnosed in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, (the Emilia-Romagna Registry on Congenital Malformations, IMER). This registry links and integrates hospital discharge records, birth certificates with cases reported by r…

White Matter Changes in Corpus Callosum in a Patient with Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (INPH) is characterized by the clinical triad of gait and cognitive dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is often required for treatment. Review of literature shows few case reports discussing benign magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2 hyperintense changes in the corpus callosum of NPH patients after shunting due to mechanical compression of the middle and posterior regions of the body against falx cerebri leading to ischemic demyelination. These changes can be a delayed phenomenon and may interfere with clinical eval…

Prenatal and postnatal presentations of corpus callosum agenesis with polymicrogyria caused by EGP5 mutation.

EPG5-related Vici syndrome is a rare multisystem autosomal recessive disorder characterized by corpus callosum agenesis (ACC), hypopigmentation, cataracts, acquired microcephaly, failure to thrive, cardiomyopathy and profound developmental delay, and immunodeficiency. We report here the first case of prenatally diagnosed Vici syndrome with delayed gyration associated with ACC. Trio based exome sequencing allowed the identification of a compound heterozygous mutation in the EPG5 gene. Our patient subsequently demonstrated severe developmental delay, hypopigmentation, progressive microcephaly, a…

Interhemispheric cortical connections and time perception: A case study with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

In daily life, we sometimes select temporal cues of one sort while suppressing others. This study investigated the mechanism of suppression by examining a split-brain patient's perception of target intervals while ignoring distractor intervals. A patient with agenesis of corpus callosum and five age- and sex-matched control subjects participated in reproduction of target intervals while ignoring distractors displayed in the visual field either ipsilateral or contralateral to target. In the patient, the distractor interfered with reproduction performance more strongly when contralateral rather …

A homozygous deleterious CDK10 mutation in a patient with agenesis of corpus callosum, retinopathy, and deafness.

The primary cilium is a key organelle in numerous physiological and developmental processes. Genetic defects in the formation of this non-motile structure, in its maintenance and function, underlie a wide array of ciliopathies in human, including craniofacial, brain and heart malformations, and retinal and hearing defects. We used exome sequencing to study the molecular basis of disease in an 11-year-old female patient who suffered from growth retardation, global developmental delay with absent speech acquisition, agenesis of corpus callosum and paucity of white matter, sensorineural deafness,…

Isolated astasia manifested by acute infarct of the anterior corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus.

Astasia, the inability to stand and walk, in the absence of weakness or ataxia, is uncommon and unique. This syndrome is easy to misdiagnose … imaging at 3days after onset demonstrated an acute infarct in the anterior part of the right-sided corpus callosum and cingulate gyrus. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed an occlusion of the right anterior cerebral artery. We discuss the possible mechanisms of astasia due to anterior callosal and cingulate infarction.

Clinical, genetic and neuropathological findings in a series of 138 fetuses with a corpus callosum malformation.

BACKGROUND: Corpus callosum malformation (CCM) is the most frequent brain malformation observed at birth. Because CCM is a highly heterogeneous condition, the prognosis of fetuses diagnosed prenatally remains uncertain, making prenatal counseling difficult. METHODS AND RESULTS: We evaluated retrospectively a total of 138 fetuses, 117 with CCM observed on prenatal imaging examination, and 21 after postmortem autopsy. On ultrasound and/or magnetic resonance imaging, CCM was either isolated (N = 40) or associated with other neurological (N = 57) or extra cerebral findings (N = 21/20, respectivel…

[An approach to screen fetal agenesis of the corpus callosum at 11-13(+6) weeks].

OBJECTIVE: To detect structural changes in the brain in fetuses with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and holoprosencephaly (HPE) in the first trimester. METHODS: The ultrasound data were analyzed retrospectively in 620 normal singleton fetuses between 11 and 13(+6) gestational weeks, 5 fetuses diagnosed to have ACC, and 13 fetuses with HPE. The midbrain diameter (MD) and falx diameter (FD) were measured and their ratio (MD/FD) was calculated for comparative analysis. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in the MD, FD, and MD/FD ratio between fetuses with ACC and HPE (P>0.05). C…

Posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy 3 is associated with agenesis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum.

Posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy (PPCD) is a dominantly inherited disorder of the corneal endothelium that has been associated with mutations in the zinc-finger E-box binding homeobox 1 gene (ZEB1) gene in approximately one-third of affected families. While the corneal dystrophies have traditionally been considered isolated disorders of the corneal endothelium, we have recently identified two cases of maldevelopment of the corpus callosum in unrelated individuals with PPCD. The proband of the first family was diagnosed shortly after birth with agenesis of the corpus callosum and severa…

Corpus callosum thickness in children: an MR pattern-recognition approach on the midsagittal image.

Thickening of the corpus callosum is an important feature of development, whereas thinning of the corpus callosum can be the result of a number of diseases that affect development or cause destruction of the corpus callosum. Corpus callosum thickness reflects the volume of the hemispheres and responds to changes through direct effects or through Wallerian degeneration. It is therefore not only important to evaluate the morphology of the corpus callosum for congenital anomalies but also to evaluate the thickness of specific components or the whole corpus callosum in association with other findi…

Resting-state networks and the functional connectome of the human brain in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

The corpus callosum is the largest white matter fiber bundle connecting the two cerebral hemispheres. In this work, we investigate the effect of callosal dysgenesis on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) resting-state networks and the functional connectome. Since alternate commissural routes between the cerebral hemispheres exist, we hypothesize that bilateral cortical networks can still be maintained in partial or even complete agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC). However, since these commissural routes are frequently indirect, requiring polysynaptic pathways, we hypothesize that …
