Discovery of 3-Carboxyl-4-pyrazolamides as Promising Herbicidal Scaffolds Targeting Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase.

Enhancing innovation in herbicide discovery is imperative to combat weed resistance and safeguard global food security. To develop novel herbicide targeting dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH), a series of 3-carboxy-4-pyrazole amide lead scaffold bearing ester or acid substituents were designed and synthesized. Bioassay evaluation revealed that compound II-12 achieved an 81% growth inhibition activity against Setaria viridis at 135 g ai/ha in postemergence greenhouse assays, with herbicidal efficacy comparable or higher than that of several commercial products. Moreover, II-12 exhibited favor

Biosynthesis, enzymatic basis, and transcriptional regulation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloids in medicinal plants.

Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) are a class of structurally diverse secondary metabolites, with over 2,500 identified variants classified into seven major categories based on their core skeletons. These compounds exhibit significant pharmacological activities - including antitumor, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects - and serve as important sources of clinical drugs such as morphine, berberine, and magnoflorine. Currently, BIAs are primarily obtained through plant cultivation and extraction. However, factors such as low in-planta content, seasonal constraints, and environmental v

SlJMJ12 overexpression confers improved cadmium tolerance in Arabidopsis and tomato.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal threatening ecosystems and crop production. The functions of histone demethylases in plant Cd tolerance remain poorly understood. We functionally characterized the tomato histone demethylase SlJMJ12 using Arabidopsis and tomato. Cd rapidly induces leaf-expressed SlJMJ12, with peak expression at 3 h post-treatment. Compared with the wild type, SlJMJ12 loss-of-function mutants show Cd sensitivity in both Arabidopsis and tomato, with reduced biomass, higher plant Cd and ROS levels, and decreased antioxidant enzyme activities, whereas overexpression improves Cd …

Flavonoids as Antimicrobial Pesticides: Mechanisms of Action, Formulation Strategies, and Perspectives for Pre- and Postharvest Disease Management.

The global spread and incidence of microbial phytopathogens are expected to increase due to climate change and the intensification of international food trade, threatening crop productivity. While pesticides remain essential for managing disease severity, European regulations and initiatives, such as the Green Deal, have emphasized the urgent need to reduce their indiscriminate use, which has contributed to pest resistance, environmental contamination, and human health issues. Botanical pesticides, particularly flavonoids, represent promising complements to traditional pesticides because of th

Applying Liebig's law of the minimum for variable rate soybean seeding based on CEC-nutrient fertility index.

This study investigated the impact of spatial variability in soil Cation Exchange Capacity and key macronutrients on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) population establishment and yield across two distinct fields. Field A presented Magnesium as the primary concern due to low inherent levels and potential antagonism from high Calcium and Potassium concentrations. Field B was characterized by a significant Calcium deficiency. Recognizing these site-specific limiting nutrients, a variable rate seeding approach was implemented in both fields. A fertility index, derived by multiplying soil CEC valu

Nutrient limitations on photosynthesis: from individual to combinational stresses.

Liebig's law of the minimum states that increasing photosynthetic productivity on nutrient-impoverished soils depends on addressing the most limiting nutrient. Research has identified the roles of different mineral nutrients in photosynthetic processes. However, diffusional and biochemical regulation of photosynthesis both feature patterns of cumulative effects that jointly determine photosynthetic capacity. More importantly, responses to multiple nutrient stresses are not simply additive and require a comprehensive understanding of how these stresses interact and impact photosynthetic perform

Role of the plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase in the regulation of organic acid exudation under aluminum toxicity and phosphorus deficiency.

Aluminum (Al) toxicity and phosphorus (P) deficiency are 2 major limiting factors for plant growth and crop production in acidic soils. Organic acids exuded from roots have been generally regarded as a major resistance mechanism to Al toxicity and P deficiency. The exudation of organic acids is mediated by membrane-localized OA transporters, such as ALMT (Al-activated malate transporter) and MATE (multidrug and toxic compound extrusion). Beside on up-regulation expression of organic acids transporter gene, transcriptional, translational and post-translational regulation of the plasma membrane …

Cropland type shapes arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) population density and species diversity in Northwest Ethiopia.

AMF play critical function in soil fertility and plant nutrition, especially in absorption and translocation of immobile nutrients. Farm and soil fertility management activities enhance crop yield; however, they either positively or negatively impact the AMF population and diversity. This study was aimed at assessing effects of farm and soil fertility management activities on AMF population density, species diversity and richness in North West Ethiopia. Soil samples were obtained from teff (Eragrostis tef) and maize (Zea mays) croplands. AMF spores were extracted, quantified, and identified. A

Alleviation of CO2-Induced Reductions in Tomato Photosynthesis Under Deficit Irrigation by Purple Nonsulfur Photosynthetic Bacteria.

The stimulatory effect of elevated CO2 (eCO2) on photosynthesis in most C3 crops under water deficit often declines over time due to photosynthetic acclimation. An exception occurs in plants inoculated with symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Photosynthetic bacteria (PSB), specifically anoxygenic purple nonsulfur bacteria (Rhodopseudomonas palustris in this study), a group of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, are effective in enhancing crop photosynthesis. Therefore, this study investigated the synergistic effects of PSB and eCO2 in alleviating the effects of deficit irrigation and enhancing photosynt

Fifteen-year stability of soil organic carbon in Pampas agroecosystems: evidence from georeferenced paired-site resampling using equivalent soil mass.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in the Pampas Region of Argentina declined substantially during the second half of the twentieth century, primarily due to land-use change and low-residue agricultural systems. Recent process-based simulations have suggested that the widespread adoption of no-till practices, increased crop productivity, and more diversified rotations may have halted these losses and shifted regional systems toward a new equilibrium. However, empirical validation at regional scale remains limited. We conducted a georeferenced paired-site resampling of 40 agricultural sites origi

Crop edge sampling and early life stage detection for improved monitoring of spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae), in berry crops.

In the 16 years since the initial detection of Drosophila suzukii Matsumura in the continental United States, integrated pest management programs in susceptible crops have been disrupted, resulting in unsustainable increases in insecticide sprays. Effective monitoring is critical for informing treatment decisions and to guide product selection when this pest is present. However, adult traps are difficult to process and poorly correlate with larval infestation in fruit. Recently focus has been placed on larval monitoring to document whether fruit are uninfested, starting to become infested, or

A Pesticide Decision Support Tool to guide the selection of less environmentally harmful pesticides for the sugar cane industry.

Pesticides applied to agricultural land have been shown to decrease the quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. This issue is addressed by the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan which includes a pesticide reduction target. As part of a wider educational strategy, one method that could help meet the target is to provide stakeholders with information that assists in the selection and use of pesticide active ingredients (PAIs) that pose a lower risk to aquatic environments compared to those currently used. This study developed a Pesticide Decision Support Tool (PDST) in col

2-Hydroxymelatonin mitigates cadmium stress in cucumis sativus seedlings: Modulation of antioxidant enzymes and polyamines.

Cadmium level is continuously increasing in agricultural soils mainly due to anthropogenic activities. Cadmium is one of the most phytotoxic metals in the soils. The present study investigates the possible role of 2-hydroxymelatonin (2-OHMT) in assuagement of Cd-toxicity in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants. 2-OHMT is an important metabolite produced through interaction of melatonin with oxygenated compounds. Cadmium stress decreased the activity of antioxidant enzymes and polyamines. However, exogenously applied 2-OHMT enhanced plant growth attributes including photosynthetic rate, interce
