We report a case of a ruptured cyst in a hyperstimulated ovary that was initially misinterpreted as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). A 22-year-old woman who was on oral clomiphene citrate for primary infertility presented with pain in the lower abdomen, hypotension, and tachycardia. Sonographic examination revealed multiple cysts in both ovaries and free fluid in the abdomen, and the initial diagnosis was OHSS. However, sonographically guided aspiration of free fluid revealed a hemoperitoneum, and the patient underwent emergent surgery. At laparotomy, an actively bleeding ruptured cys

The posterior mediastinum is the usual location of enteric cysts. They can be located at any part of the posterior mediastinum adjacent to the oesophagus, but communication with that structure is rare. Approximately 60 percent of the cysts occur in infants less than one year of age, and symptoms of tracheal or oesophageal obstruction are common. The cysts usually contain clear, colorless mucoid fluid. The authors describe here a successfully treated enteric cyst with an unusual, retroperitoneal location, which presented in an adult.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the degree of fluid-fluid levels on MRI in spinal tumours compared with final diagnosis, and the outcome of needle biopsy in such cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of patients with a spinal tumour that contained fluid-fluid levels. Data collected included age, sex, spinal location, and final diagnosis. The outcome of needle biopsy was investigated.
RESULTS: Forty-two patients were included (19 males; 24 females; mean age 27.5 years, range 5-80 years), the commonest diagnoses being aneurysmal bone cyst (n = 25; 59.5%) and metastasis (n = 5; 11.9%). All pa

The diagnosis of hepatic cystic echinococcosis is based on ultrasonography and confirmed by serology. However, no biological marker of cyst viability is currently available implying years-long patient follow-up, which is not always feasible in endemic areas. We characterized the performance of an immunoblotting test based on human hydatid cyst fluid with particular regard to its ability to distinguish between cyst stages. Sera from patients with cysts in different stages showed distinctive band pattern recognition. Most importantly, the test discriminated in 80% of cases CE3a from CE3b transit…

INTRODUCTION: Synovial cyst is composed by a fibrous wall; lining by a thin layer of synovial cells containing synovial fluid, the prototype of these, in the knee is the Baker's cyst, which is located abnormally in the gastrocnemius semimembranous bursa. Baker's cyst prevalence ranges from 5 - 38%. Clinical diagnosis is supported by the presence of increased volume of soft tissues located in the popliteal region.
CLINICAL CASE: A 74 year-old woman with longstanding active rheumatoid arthritis who developed a large, recurrent Baker's cyst. The Baker's cyst had two flare-ups of pain and soft ti

We present a 2.5-year-old child suffering from acute hydrocephalus. First, the child was diagnosed with aseptic viral meningitis. The PCR of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was positive for enterovirus. Subsequently, MRI revealed that the hydrocephalus was caused by a cyst in the third ventricle. During ventriculoscopy, the cyst had all aspects of an arachnoid cyst. An endoscopic fenestration and partial removal of the cyst was performed, combined with a ventriculocisternostomy. The coincidental finding of viral meningitis and a third ventricle arachnoid cyst in a patient with acute hydrocephalu

The dorsal cyst is poorly understood, although it is commonly encountered in holoprosencephaly. We endeavor to establish the role of diencephalic malformations in the formation of the dorsal cyst and speculate on the developmental factors responsible. We reviewed the imaging of 70 patients with holoprosencephaly (MRI of 50 and high-quality CT of 20). The presence or absence of a dorsal cyst, thalamic noncleavage and abnormal thalamic orientation were assessed for statistical association, using Fisher's Exact Test and logistical regression. The presence of a dorsal cyst correlated strongly with

BACKGROUND: Biodegradable anchors may lead to perianchor cyst formation or osteolysis. A new generation of anchors containing osteoconductive material was recently presented, but there is currently no solid evidence that this concept decreases cyst formation around anchors.
HYPOTHESIS: The null hypothesis was that the prevalence and severity of cyst formation around anchors would be similar for all 3 anchor types.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2.
METHODS: To evaluate differences between anchor behaviors postoperatively, this study included 2 groups of patients who underwent

A traumatic bone cyst is a pseudocyst, lacking an epithelial lining, and may contain fluid, connective tissue, or both. The pathogenesis of traumatic bone cyst remains unknown, but the most accepted explanation is the traumatic hemorrhagic theory. A traumatic bone cyst typically presents as a radiolucent lesion. However, it can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges when it manifests as a mixed entity in an unusual location. The present report describes an exceptional case of a mixed-density traumatic bone cyst involving the mandibular ramus and coronoid process of an 18-year-old man.

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association1999eng
We describe a surgical arthroscopic treatment for popliteal cyst in a series of 30 patients, with a mean follow-up of 32 months. The treatment consists of a cure for the intra-articular pathology of the knee associated with popliteal cysts, and the contemporaneous correction of the valvular mechanism responsible for the formation and reoccurrence of popliteal cyst. The popliteal cyst in adults was found to be almost invariably associated with other knee disorders. In all of the cases studied, a connection between joint space and cyst was found. Arthroscopy allowed the treatment of almost all o

This case report covers the novel use of an Nd:YAG Ultra-Q Reflex laser to treat a symptomatic vitreous cyst in a 47-year-old man. Following a single 0.3-mJ laser pulse applied to the cyst's superior pole, controlled fluid egress led to cyst collapse and inferior displacement without complications. The patient experienced immediate visual improvement, with the cyst remaining inactive in the inferior vitreous at 1-month follow-up and demonstrating no significant change in size when located in the anterior vitreous at 10 months. This laser cystotomy technique presents a safe, effective, and mini

Cardiac hydatid cysts are a rare presentation of hydatid cyst disease in the body, with a reported cardiac involvement rate of <2%. The left ventricle is the most common site of cardiac involvement. Here, we report a patient with a hydatid cyst that ruptured into the pericardium after producing an aneurysm on the right ventricular free wall, appearing as fibrinated fluid and a solid mass lesion in the pericardium. Our aim in this case report was to emphasise that the possibility of a hydatid cyst should not be overlooked in the differential diagnosis of pericardial tumours.

Echinococcus granulosus infrequently induces spinal hydatid cysts, and intradural hydatid cysts are extremely rare among these spinal hydatid cysts. We report a 30-year-old man with a history of progressive back pain caused by a previous back injury. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a spinal intradural cystic lesion. After surgical removal, histopathological diagnosis was a hydatid cyst. The patient had no other symptoms of systemic hydatid cyst disease. Diagnosis of hydatid cyst should be considered prior to surgery, especially in young patients with spinal intradural cystic lesions, as le

A 20-year-old woman suffered gradual progression of right pulsatile exophthalmos and slight headache. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated outward and downward displacement of the right globe and an arachnoid cyst in the right middle cranial fossa associated with thinned and anterior protrusion of a bony orbit. Microscopic cystocisternotomy was performed and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) inside of the cyst communicated into the carotid cistern and cistern in the posterior cranial fossa. Pulsatile exophthalmos improved immediately after surgery. Arachnoid cyst in the middle cranial fossa prese

A bronchogenic cyst was found in the abdomen, in the retroperitoneum adjacent to the superior pancreatic body. The cyst was unilocular and contained about 100 ml pale yellow mucinous fluid. Microscopic examination revealed a pseudostratified columnar ciliated or cuboidal epithelium, seromucous glands, smooth muscle and cartilage, the distinctive features of bronchogenic cysts. This aberrant location of the cyst is explicable if abnormal buds of the tracheobronchial tree are pinched off and migrate into the abdomen in an early embryonic stage before the canal linking the abdominal with the thor

We report a case of a 2-year-old girl who presented to us with complaints of pain abdomen and non-bilious vomiting. USG was suggestive of intussusception with necrotic bowel and free fluid in the left lumbar region. Operative findings were of enteric duplication cyst of the pancreas which was later confirmed on histopathology. Enteric duplication cysts can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract but duplication cyst within the pancreas is rare. The most common presentation in other reported cases is pain abdomen due to pancreatitis but in our case, we had findings of intussusception. Chil

We report an unusual case of metastatic adult granulosa cell tumor in the head of pancreas mimicking a benign pancreatic cyst in a 43-year-old female. Clinically, it was considered a benign cyst of the pancreas based on its appearance by imaging and that repeated fine-needle aspiration and cytologic examination of cystic fluid failed to identify malignant cells. The cyst in her pancreas grew slowly during the 15 months of close follow-up. Subsequent drainage and open biopsy of the cyst wall established the diagnosis of metastatic adult granulosa cell tumor that was confirmed in pancreaticoduod

A 66-year-old woman, having no complaint, admitted our clinic, because of a mass in the right superior mediastinum detected three years ago on chest X-ray. The operation was performed through the right thoracotomy in December of 1989. The thin-walled cyst located adjacent to the trachea between superior vena cava and back bones, occupied from beneath the innominate artery to the right main bronchus. The tumor (7 x 5 x 5 cm) weighing 80 grams had a smooth surface and contained watery fluid. Histological examination showed a cyst lined a monolayer of cuboidal epithelium. The cyst wall consisted

BACKGROUND: Hydatidosis, a chronic zoonotic disease, has a distribution worldwide and is caused by the larval stage of the Echinococcus helminth. The Dot-ELISA test can diagnose hydatidosis quickly and accurately. Additionally, unlike other hydatid disease tests now used, this quick and affordable enzyme immunoassay is very serum-conservative and antigen-conservative, needing just nanogram levels of parasite antigen.
METHODS: In the present cross-sectional study, crude and B antigens of hydatid cyst fluid were obtained to diagnose human hydatidosis using CIEP (Counter Immunoelectrophoresis), …

BACKGROUND: The detection of antibodies in saliva samples proved to be effective in the diagnosis of several microbial diseases. These antibodies were screened in saliva samples of patients with hydatid cysts.
METHODS: Anti-hydatid fluid antigen IgG and IgA antibodies were screened in saliva and sera of patients with hydatid cysts (n=37) as well as in healthy controls (n=30) using an in-house developed immunoenzymatic assay.
RESULTS: Salivary anti-hydatid fluid antigen IgG showed a sensitivity of 86.5% and a specificity of 80%. A positive correlation was observed between anti-hydatid fluid a
