This study reports 3 cases of acute orbital inflammation that occurred within 3 weeks of various dental procedures and offers a possible mechanism as to their cause. The charts of 3 patients were retrospectively examined. Clinical notes, laboratory testing, and imaging studies were reviewed. The cases involved a 36-year old woman, a 61-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old woman who developed acute dacryoadenitis after tooth extraction in the former case and after routine dental cleaning in the latter 2. A 22-year-old patient presented with persistent epiphora over a period of about 7 months. The clinical examination revealed a canalicular swelling in both lacrimal ducts, which postoperatively transpired to be an exophytic tumor. The histopathology result of the excised tumor showed an epithelial lesion, a partially inverted papilloma without malignancy. For tumors arising from lachrimal ducts the first-line therapy is complete tumor resection.

An autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) patient with metachronous and multiple extrapancreatic lesions is reported. Initial symptoms were proptosis, oculomotor deficits, and a visual field deficit of the left eye, and swelling of bilateral lacrimal glands. Reactive arthritis is a well-known sequel to both dysenteric and urethritic illnesses, classically occurring in combination with conjunctivitis, arthritis, and/or a variety of dermatologic conditions. Dacryoadenitis has not been previously described as part of the spectrum of reactive arthritis. The authors describe a case of biopsy-proven bilateral dacryoadenitis, which developed in the setting of chlamydial urethritis.

BACKGROUND: Affections of the lacrimal drainage system are often seen by ophthalmologists. Inspection, palpation, diagnostic rinsing and sounding can distinguish anatomical stops before or after tear sac. For final diagnostics however more apparative examinations are necessary. The ultrasonic examination with contrast media is a simple method for diagnostics of affections of the lacrimal drainage system besides the dacryocystography, the scintigraphy and other ones.

The results of 104 endoscopically controlled dacryocystorhinostomies performed in 93 patients from June 1989 to June 1993 are presented. Postoperatively, 38 patients had a hematoma, 12 a subcutaneous emphysema and three patients an intraorbital emphysema. All complications were transitory. On 89 sides (85.57%) dacryorrhea was completely cured, on ten sides (9.61%) it was eased considerably, and it was not resolved in five cases, of whom, two had been operated through an external approach previously. Dacryocystography is a standard technique for the visualization of the lacrimal pathways. In 1974, Lloyd et al. first described manual subtraction of dacryocystograms. Digital subtraction dacryocystography has definite advantages compared to the conventional dacryocystograms and manual subtraction. A 65-year-old patient with chronic leukemia underwent an uncomplicated dacryocystorhinostomy. On the first postoperative day, the eye was proptotic and chemotic with restricted movements. A CT scan revealed a medial juxtabulbar hemorrhage that blocked the surgical osteotomy. A clot was locally suctioned through the nose, and the symptoms resolved over the following weeks.

The topography and morphology of the lacrimal ducts in newborn infants was demonstrated by means of post mortem dacryocystograms and microphotograms of histologic slides. Because of bends in the course of the lower tear duct, a percentage of probings will fail to effect satisfactory perforation of the Hasner membrane. In most cases, the soft texture of this membrane requires no more than syringing under pressure, using a hollow probe as described by Bangerter (1953).

A high incidence of keratoconjunctivitis was observed in a closed colony of inbred Lewis/Wistar rats. OBJECTIVES: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is characterized by various serological abnormalities. Some patients with IgG4-RD present with hypergammaglobulinemia, hypocomplementemia, and autoantibodies recognizing rheumatoid factors and nuclear factors. However, whether IgG4-RD is an autoimmune disease remains unclear.
METHODS: Here, we used immune complexome analysis to comprehensively identify constituent antigens of circulating immune complexes isolated from 10 patients with IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and/or sialadenitis (IgG4-RDS) which is one condition associated with IgG4-RD.
