Reorganization of large-scale brain networks in deaf signing adults: The role of auditory cortex in functional reorganization following deafness.

If the brain is deprived of input from one or more senses during development, functional and structural reorganization of the deprived regio … nd superior frontal gyri, pre- and postcentral gyri, and cerebellum crus 8. These results show that deafness induces large-scale network reorganization, with the middle/superior temporal cortex as a central node of plasticity. Cross-modal reorganization may be associated with behavioral adaptations to the environment, including superior ability in some vis …

The views of people with a lived experience of deafness and the general public regarding genetic testing for deafness in the reproductive setting: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Genes associated with nonsyndromic hearing loss are commonly included in reproductive carrier screening panels, which are now routinely offered in preconception and prenatal care in many countries. However, there is debate whether hearing loss should be considered a medical condition appropriate for screening. This systematic review assessed research on opinions of those with a lived experience of deafness and the general public regarding genetic testing for deafness in the reproductive setting. METHODS: Search of 5 online databases yielded 423 articles, 20 of which met inclusion cri…

Claudin 14 knockout mice, a model for autosomal recessive deafness DFNB29, are deaf due to cochlear hair cell degeneration.

Tight junctions (TJs) create ion-selective paracellular permeability barriers between extracellular compartments. In the organ of Corti of the inner ear, TJs of the reticular lamina separate K(+)-rich endolymph and Na(+)-rich perilymph. In humans, mutations of the gene encoding claudin 14 TJ protein cause profound deafness but the underlying pathogenesis is unknown. To explore the role of claudin 14 in the inner ear and in other tissues we created a mouse model by a targeted deletion of Cldn14. In the targeted allele a lacZ cassette is expressed under the Cldn14 promoter. In Cldn14-lacZ hetero…

Identifying biomarkers of deafness-induced cerebral plasticity using MRI.

Scientific knowledge of cerebral plasticity has evolved substantially in recent decades, with findings from animal models complementing and extending human observations. Notably, invasive techniques unique to animal research have been fundamental in the domain of sensory neuroscience, granting a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamic structure and function of the mammalian brain. The purpose of this review is to explore biomarkers of deafness-induced compensatory crossmodal plasticity from a neuroimaging perspective, with a particular focus on the recent presence of animal models in t…

Long Term Voice Effects of Partial Deafness Cochlear Implantation.

Partial deafness (PD) causes a deprivation in hearing high frequencies. This leads to voice functional voice disorders. Study shows that PD is associated with changes in frequency, amplitude, noise, tremor, and voice irregularities. Partial deafness cochlear implantation (PDCI) has been proven to improve voice quality. The aim of the study was to evaluate the long-term voice effects of PDCI on voice. Voice samples of 16 adult bilaterally PD patients were analyzed 72 months after one-sided PDCI and compared to the results obtained 9 months after the procedure. Results showed that the improvemen…

Deafness and Sign Language Experience Shift Visual Category Representations.

Childhood visual experiences shape our ability to rapidly recognize faces and objects. Across development, regions processing visual categories that lose relevance, such as hands, are recycled for others. How would visual cortex accommodate a childhood in which hands maintain significance? Through functional magnetic resonance imaging, we demonstrate that high-level visual cortex in Deaf signers develops a unique topography to accommodate the learning of sign language in childhood, with distinct but significant changes observed in hearing signers who acquired sign language in adulthood. These

Understanding susceptibility to inattentional deafness in safety-critical environments.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamic occupational environments, such as construction sites, present workers with frequent changes, some of which pose serious risk. Workers are expected to detect and respond to these changes using sensory cues, including auditory warnings intentionally designed to draw attention to hazardous conditions. However, these cues often compete with high cognitive load, which can result in missed warning sounds, a phenomenon known as inattentional deafness. This study examines susceptibility to inattentional deafness during a simulated construction task. METHOD: Data were collected …

Distractor-induced deafness: ERP correlates of auditory distractor processing.

Distractor-induced deafness (DID) refers to the impaired detection of an auditory target when preceded by a rapid sequence of auditory distractors sharing the target's features. We examined whether the neural signatures underlying DID resemble those found in visual distractor-induced blindness (DIB). Participants completed a rapid serial auditory presentation (RSAP) task in which distractor number and cue-target onset asynchrony were systematically manipulated. Behaviorally, target detection declined with increasing distractor number, closely replicating the behavioral DIB effect. Event-relate…

Determination of carriers of deafness-infertility syndrome in Peru.

The prevalence of deafness-infertility syndrome (DIS) is approximately 1%. Genetic heterogeneity is one cause of homozygous copy number variants (CNVs) involving the CATSPER2 and STRC genes, which are associated with DIS and male infertility. Because the prevalence of DIS in Peru is unknown, we aimed to determine the frequency of carriers of DIS-related genes. In this descriptive crossover study, we evaluated the clinical histories and chromosomal microarray analysis results of patients at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño Breña from 2015 to 2022. All patients with CNVs involving the CA…

Early cochlear implantation for children with single sided deafness.

OBJECTIVES: Single-sided deafness (SSD) can have consequences for a child's language, educational, and social development. A cochlear implant (CI) is the only device which can restore true binaural hearing, yet they are only approved for children with (SSD) over the age of five in the United States. Reports on speech perception outcomes for children implanted at a younger age are limited. The present study aims to examine the effects of age at implantation, duration of deafness, hearing loss etiology, and presence of additional disabilities on device usage and speech perception outcomes. METH…

Functional studies of deafness-associated pendrin and prestin variants.

Pendrin and prestin are evolutionary conserved membrane proteins that are essential for normal hearing. Pendrin is an anion transporter required for normal development and maintenance of ion homeostasis in the inner ear, while prestin is a voltage-dependent motor responsible for cochlear amplification essential for high sensitivity and frequency selectivity of mammalian hearing. Dysfunction of these proteins result in hearing loss in humans, and numerous deafness-associated pendrin and prestin variants have been identified in patients. However, the pathogenic impacts of many of these variants …

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct as a cause of postneonatal deafness.

INTRODUCTION: The enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is the most frequent malformation of the inner ear associated with sensorineural hearing loss (5-15%). It exists when the diameter in imaging tests is greater than 1.5 mm at its midpoint. The association between hearing loss and EVA has been described in a syndromic and non-syndromic manner. It can appear as a familial or isolated form and the audiological profile is highly variable. The gene responsible for sensorineural hearing loss associated with EVA is located in the same region described for Pendred syndrome, where the SCL26A4 gene is

Deafness-associated tRNAPhe mutation impaired mitochondrial and cellular integrity.

Defects in mitochondrial RNA metabolism have been linked to sensorineural deafness that often occurs as a consequence of damaged or deficient inner ear hair cells. In this report, we investigated the molecular mechanism underlying a deafness-associated tRNAPhe 593T > C mutation that changed a highly conserved uracil to cytosine at position 17 of the DHU-loop. The m.593T > C mutation altered tRNAPhe structure and function, including increased melting temperature, resistance to S1 nuclease-mediated digestion, and conformational changes. The aberrant tRNA metabolism impaired mitochondrial transla…

A Japanese Patient With Progressive Word Deafness and Logoclonia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is classified into several types. However, syndromes that do not belong to these typical types of PPA have been reported, such as cases where only progressive apraxia of speech (AOS) is present in the early stages of the disease. Moreover, there have been a few case reports of patients with progressive word deafness complicated with logoclonia as a speech disorder. Herein, we report a case of degenerative disease with phonological paraphasia, AOS, impaired speech sound cognition, and logoclonia with disease progression. The written language comprehension of th…
