Cross-sectional study to evaluate variations in attached gingiva and gingival sulcus in the three periods of dentition.

The dimensional differences of the attached gingiva and gingival sulcus in the primary, mixed and permanent dentition were studied clinically in normal gingivae of 382 children, aged 4-15 years. The depth of the gingival sulcus and the width of keratinized gingiva were also measured. Shallow gingival sulcus was observed in the primary dentition as compared to that in permanent dentition. However, in the mixed dentition deeper sulcus was observed around the newly erupted teeth. This was attributed to deeper penetration of the instrument, at the time of eruption. The widest zone of attached ging…

[Radiographic study of the development of the permanent dentition of Brazilian children with a chronological age of 84 and 131 months].

With the help of orthopantomograms we analyse the tooth development beside body weight and height from Brazilian healthy boys and girls. So, their dental age were compared to their chronological age. The results of this investigation, according to the methodology employed, indicated that: 1. girls showed accelerated formation of permanent teeth and mean values of dental age higher than boys; 2. the mean values of dental age in girls were higher than their chronological age in all groups; 3. the teeth development stages were appropriate in assessment of the degree of physiological maturity of a

A retrospective radiographic study of alveolar bone loss in the primary dentition in patients with localized juvenile periodontitis.

Lately, it has been questioned whether localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) is restricted to the permanent dentition, or if it sometimes might have a prepubertal onset, involving the primary dentition. To clarify this question, 17 patients with LJP, together with 17 non-LJP matched controls, were retrospectively examined for radiographic signs of alveolar bone destruction in their primary dentitions. All LJP subjects but one showed localized marginal bone loss, whereas no bone loss was observed among the controls. The results suggest that at least some cases of LJP start in the primary denti…

[Use of cancellous bone and periosteal transplants in primary and secondary cleft palate during a change in dentition].

A group of patients that was selected jointly with orthodontists consisted of 25 subjects, aged 8-16 years, having undergone operation for the cleft of primary and secondary palate, with left jaw defect. The patients had correct bites with good cure prognosis. Cancellous bone and periosteal flap taken from the wing-like portion of ilium were grafted into their jaw defects. After 1 year the alveolar process continuity was obtained in 23 patients (92%) and in the remaining ones the resorption of the graft was recorded. Reconstruction of the alveolar process was visible in radiographs, and erupti

Structural and microanalytical changes in dentition after radiotherapy applied in cases of tumour in the oral cavity region.

Morphological observations by means of the scanning electron and optical microscopes as well as microanalytical qualitative and quantitative tests concerning content and distribution of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the teeth being in irradiation field were made in patients treated for larynx cancer by methods of radiotherapy. The teeth enamel was in some places thinner and in some others it was lacking. The characteristic defects took place in the form of notches, cracks and of superficial destruction. In X-ray microanalyser the enamel showed some features of demineralization. In denti

Function and dysfunction of the masticatory system in individuals with intact and restored dentitions. A clinical, psychological and physiological study.

In all, 125 individuals, 13-23 years old, with intact dentitions and 163 individuals, 13-20 years old, with dental fillings were included in a series of studies. The results of the studies suggest that subjects with intact dentitions have a lower prevalence and degree of signs and symptoms of mandibular dysfunction than subjects with restorations in the teeth. However, most signs and symptoms in both groups were mild and infrequent. The most common symptoms in both groups were TMJ-sounds, tiredness during chewing, and headache, and the most common clinical signs were TMJ-sounds and muscles ten…

Mandibular condylar structure and growth in Macaca fascicularis are related to skeletal rather than dentitional development.

Mandibular condyles of eight male monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), ranging in weight from 1.5 to 3.0 kg, were examined using histometric, radioautographic and stereologic techniques. The animals were classified on the basis of their dentitional and, as judged from radiographs of the hand and wrist, of their skeletal development. This allowed morphometric parameter means to be plotted as a function of four dentitional and five skeletal levels of maturation. The influence of dentitional and skeletal age on total parameter variations was examined by calculating factorial analyses of variance. Altho…

Prepubertal periodontitis affecting the deciduous and permanent dentition in a patient with cyclic neutropenia. A case report and discussion.

Neutropenia is a transient or chronic blood disorder characterized by a decrease in the number of circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Neutrophils are a major cellular defense against infection, and depletion of these cells is potentially fatal. Stomatitis and gingivitis frequently are seen in patients with neutropenia. Therefore, the diagnosis of severe oral pathoses of obscure origin must include a differential white blood cell count. The importance of the dentist's role is dramatically illustrated in the rare case reported here, since the oral condition was the reason for this p

Comprehensive oral rehabilitation of worn dentition using a facially driven digital workflow and minimally invasive adhesive restorations.

A 52-year-old male patient presented with chronic posterior maxillary pain, multiple dental wear with mild sensitivity, compromised anterior esthetics, and impaired function correlated with failed posterior restorations and occlusal disharmonies. A comprehensive rehabilitation protocol was implemented using facial and intraoral scanning, digital smile design, and staged prosthetic procedures, including endodontic retreatment, gingivectomy, and restoration delivery at an increased vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). The final phase involved digital occlusal analysis to assess and refine inte

An immediate implant approach to replace failing maxillary anterior dentition due to orthodontically induced severe root resorption.

Incomplete orthodontic therapy can lead to severe root resorption, resulting in mobile and non-restorable teeth. This clinical report presents the diagnosis, treatment planning and oral rehabilitation of a young woman with failing dentition in the anterior maxilla due to orthodontically induced root resorption. The patient's chief complaint was mobile maxillary anterior teeth 2 years after discontinuing orthodontic treatment. Radiographic and clinical evaluations revealed a missing right first premolar and left premolars and grade III mobility from the right canine to the left lateral incisor.…

Association of infant growth with emergence of permanent dentition among 12 year-aged southern Chinese school children.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to comprehensively investigate the relationship between tooth eruption and infant growth to explain the theory of tooth emergence. This study aimed to investigate the association between infant growth during the first year of life and the emergence of the permanent teeth. METHODS: A random sample of 668, 12-year-old students was recruited from a birth cohort. Erupted permanent tooth number was recorded. The association of infant growth (growth trajectories and growth rates) and permanent tooth emergence was examined through logistic regression analyses. The regress
