Perinatal death triples the prevalence of postpartum depression among women in Northern Uganda: A community-based cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Deaths during the perinatal period remain a big challenge in Africa, with 38 deaths per 1000 pregnancies in Uganda. The consequences of these deaths can be detrimental to the women; some ending up with postpartum depression. We examined the association between perinatal death and postpartum depression among women in Lira district, Northern Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study of 1,789 women. Trained research assistants screened women for postpartum depressive symptoms on day 50 postpartum using the Edinburgh postpartum depression scale (EPDS). So

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies during early gestation and the subsequent risk of first-onset postpartum depression: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During the postpartum period, women are at risk for the new onset of both auto-immune thyroid disorders and depression. The presence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-ab) during early gestation is predictive for postpartum auto-immune thyroid dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between TPO-ab status during early gestation and first-onset postpartum depression. METHODS: Prospective cohort study (n = 1075) with follow-up during pregnancy up to one year postpartum. Thyroid function and TPO-ab status were measured during early gestation. Depressiv

Risk of Mental Health Disorders Following an Initial Diagnosis of Postpartum Depression, Active Component, U.S. Armed Forces, 1998-2010.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common psychiatric conditions of the postpartum period. Several studies have found an association between PPD and other mental health disorders. The Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS) was used to identify a cohort of primiparous service women with PPD between 1998 and 2010 and match them by month of delivery to a cohort of women without PPD. During the surveillance period, there were 5,203 incident cases of PPD with a crude rate of 44.9 per 1,000 person-years. Individuals in the PPD cohort, when compared to their matched controls, were at

Development and external validation of an explainable XGBoost model with a web-based calculator for risk prediction of postpartum depressive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with severe adverse outcomes, yet timely risk stratification remains challenging. Existing machine learning models are often limited by insufficient external validation, limited interpretability, and lack of accessible clinical tools. This study aimed to develop and externally validate an explainable machine learning model with a web-based calculator for predicting postpartum depressive symptoms. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 553 women from two hospitals, comprising 403 in the development cohort and 150 in an independ

A Comparative Analysis of the Acceptability of the MATER Positive Psychology Intervention Versus Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in Women With Postpartum Depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent condition with important consequences for both mothers and infants. Although Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is considered the first-line psychological treatment, Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) have recently emerged as promising approaches by promoting well-being alongside symptom reduction. This randomized clinical trial compared the acceptability of an online Positive Psychology programme (Maternal insights for Awareness, Thriving, Emotions and Resilience [MATER]) with a CBT programme for women with PPD. A total of 136 women were rando

Prevalence and influencing factors of perinatal depression across different stages of pregnancy and postpartum: a cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression (PND) is a major public health concern, affecting both maternal and infant health. While numerous studies have examined risk factors for PND, most focused on single pregnancy stages, with limited evidence spanning the full perinatal period. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of PND across pregnancy and postpartum, and identify stage-specific influencing factors among Chinese women. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,047 participants in early pregnancy (T1: ≤ 13 weeks), 543 in mid-pregnancy (T2: 14-27 weeks), 421 in late pregnancy (T3

A Critical Review of Post-Childbirth Pain Experiences and Management in Relation to Postpartum Depression Risk for Racial and Ethnic Minorities.

PURPOSE: This critical review examines literature published between January 2020 and January 2025, focusing on overlapping pain-related factors during and after childbirth (e.g., pain experiences and management). These factors may increase vulnerability to postpartum depression, especially among racial and ethnic minorities. RECENT FINDINGS: The findings from the 23 studies reviewed indicate that several factors contribute to peripartum pain experienced by individuals giving birth. Factors influencing the birthing person's pain experiences include their mental health during pregnancy (such as

Management of Acute Onset Catatonia Postpartum in a Patient With a History of Major Depressive Disorder With Psychotic Features: A Case Report.

Catatonia is a rare but potentially life-threatening neuropsychiatric syndrome characterized by a range of motor, behavioral, and affective abnormalities. Catatonia is broadly categorized into three clinical presentations: associated with a psychiatric disorder, secondary to a medical condition, or of unspecified origin. Postpartum catatonia remains poorly understood, particularly in cases where there is no active psychiatric or medical illness at the time of onset. Most documented cases occur in the context of severe peripartum mood or psychotic episodes, highlighting the unique nature of cat
