[Taxonomy of Malassezia furfur: state of the art].

Malassezia furfur is a lipophilic yeast considered as a normal component of the human skin flora. Apart from pityriasis versicolor, M. furfur has been linked to several skin diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, folliculitis or atopic dermatitis. Moreover, these yeasts have been reported as agent of invasive human diseases including pneumonia, catheter-associated sepsis and peritonitis. The existence of morphological, serological, metabolical, biochemical and karyotipical differences has been described among isolates of these yeasts. These observations gave arguments for a possible intraspec

A comparison of postprocedural wound care treatments: do antibiotic-based ointments improve outcomes?

BACKGROUND: Topical antibiotic ointments are commonly used for the postprocedural treatment of superficial wounds created during dermatologic procedures. We propose that antibiotics may not be necessary for healing these wounds, have the potential to cause allergic contact dermatitis, and may contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance. OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the efficacy and safety of a nonantibiotic, petrolatum-based ointment (Aquaphor Healing Ointment [AHO], Beiersdorf Inc, Wilton, CT) and an antibiotic-based first-aid ointment (Polysporin [Poly/Bac], Johnson & Johnson,

Unveiling a Shared Precursor Condition for Acne Keloidalis Nuchae and Primary Cicatricial Alopecias.

PURPOSE: Small observational studies suggest subclinical disease occurrence in the normal-appearing scalp zones of several primary cicatricial alopecias. To aid patient management, we began routinely evaluating the entire scalp of patients with acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), including trichoscopy-guided biopsies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 41 patients sequentially presenting with AKN at a single clinic between June and December 2022. Primary lesions and normal-appearing scalp in the superior parietal scalp at least 5 cm away from AKN-affected zones were clinically

Parthenium dermatitis manifesting clinically as polymorphic light eruption and prurigo nodularis- like lesions with vasculitis-like picture on histopathology.

Parthenium dermatitis is a widespread and distressing dermatoses in rural and urban India caused by the air borne allergen of the Compositae … folds Other presentations include a photodermatitis (essentially a pseudo photodermatitis), atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, exfoliative dermatitis, hand dermatitis. Photosensitive lichenoid dermatitis and prurigo nodularis are rarer presentations. Uncommon presentations have been described in parthenium dermatitis. They include prurigo nodularis-like lesions …

Adult-onset infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-I. Clinical and immunopathological aspects of two cases.

Infective dermatitis associated with HTLV-I (IDH) is a chronic, infected childhood eczema. Two adult-onset cases of IDH were studied, one of which was associated with HAM/TSP. The patients were submitted to dermatological, neurological and pathological examination. Immunohistochemical studies were made using CD3, CD4, CD8, CD20, CD79a, and CD57 antibodies. Cytotoxic granules were investigated using granzyme B, perforin, and TIA. The patients presented infected erythematous, scaly lesions with mild itching and a good response to sulfamethoxazole/ trimethoprim. A differential diagnosis with atop

[Malassezia yeasts and their significance in dermatology].

Yeasts of the genus Malassezia belong to the normal microflora of the human skin. In addition they are known to cause a variety of skin diseases; the most frequent of which is pityriasis versicolor. Malassezia yeasts are also thought to be associated with seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and Malassezia folliculitis. Recently the significance of Malassezia yeasts as a trigger factor for atopic dermatitis of the head and neck region has been pointed out. The role of the Malassezia yeasts in these different diseases has been controversial in the past and remains an issue because of difficulties in

Localized crusted scabies of the scalp and feet.

An atypical case of crusted scabies in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is presented in which lesions at the time of evaluation were confined to the scalp and feet. Because of the unusual presentation, the scalp involvement (which clinically mimicked seborrheic dermatitis) was initially missed. Although both the crusted variant of scabies and scabietic involvement of the scalp are well documented to occur in immunocompromised patients, to our knowledge scabies confined to the scalp and feet has not been previously reported.

The "teepee" sign in inflammatory scalp disease.

Psoriasis and other diffuse inflammatory diseases of the scalp can cause a unique physical findings that we call the "teepee sign" because the hair forms pyramidal tufts at regular intervals that resemble an American Indian encampment. A pathological mechanism for this finding is proposed, with the description of two cases in Air Force basic trainees, one of a severe seborrheic dermatitis and the other psoriasis. The significance with regard to physical qualification for entry into military service is discussed.

Classification of High Curl Pattern Hair: A Systematic Review and Clinical Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Hair type classification is crucial for developing personalized hair care, maximizing hair health, and selecting appropriate treatment for scalp disorders, yet it remains underutilized in clinical practice. AIMS: This review aimed to address three main questions: (1) How can hair types be defined according to specific shape criteria, without referring to race/ethnicity? (2) Why does certain hair exhibit a curly pattern, and how does curly hair behave uniquely? (3) How is the classification of curly hair clinically relevant to the development of seborrheic dermatitis? METHODS: Pub

Novel inhibitor against Malassezia globosa LIP1 (SMG1), a potential anti-dandruff target.

Compelling evidence have demonstrated the role of lipase activity in the pathogenicity of Malassezia globosa toward dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD). As a representative secreted lipase from M. globosa CBS 7966, Malassezia globosa LIP1 (SMG1) is considered a potential anti-dandruff target. In this study, homology modeling, docking-based virtual screening and in vitro lipase-based assay were integrated to identify the first hit compound against SMG1, with an IC50 of 20 μM against synthetic lipase substrate, and of 0.19 μM when using natural lipase substrate. Evaluation of similar compo

[Lipophilic yeasts of the genus Malassezia and skin diseases. I. Seborrhoeic dermatitis].

Recent technological advances have revived the interest in Malassezia yeasts and their clinical role, which has long been a matter of controversy because of their fastidious nature in vitro and relative difficulty in isolation, cultivation and identification. Lipophilic yeasts of the genus Malassezia form a part of normal microbial flora of healthy human (and animal) skin, but they also have been associated with several dermatological diseases, like seborrhoeic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Our understanding of the interactions between Malassezia and the host might provide new opportunitie
