A new case of Aase-Smith syndrome has been reported with additional findings, including microcephaly, axial rotation of the kidneys, preaxial polydactyly and leukopenia. The patient had almost complete clinical remission with corticosteroid treatment. The findings in this case suggest that it is very difficult to differentiate Aase-Smith syndrome from Blackfan-Diamond and Fanconi's anemias as well as from those cases reported by Murphy and Lubin, and Jones and Thompson.

Intact teeth were obtained from three cadavers of known age 56, 67, and 76 years, respectively. Cross-sections 100-150 micrometers thick were taken from the roots using a diamond saw. Individual sections were stained, mounted on glass slides, and photographed on a light microscope. The usual number of years for the eruption of any particular tooth were added to the annulation count to determine the estimated age for that cadaver.

Electron microscopy of ultrathin osmium-fixed sections of dental calculus, cut with a diamond knife without prior decalcification, revealed densely mineralized areas entrapping many degenerating microorganisms, within which were deposited similarly electron-dense crystals. Two principal forms of crystals were found, the predominant type being of the same order of magnitude and shape as those found in bone, and showing the typical characteristics of apatite in selected area electron diffraction patterns.

The authors present an anatomical study of a small flap that may be harvested from any of the palmar intermetacarpal spaces while performing fasciectomy in Dupuytren's contracture. The flap is diamond-shaped, vascularised by two perforating branches originating from the underlying true digital arteries and may be rotated through 90 degrees to 180 degrees in either direction to provide skin cover and subcutaneous padding over the distal palm and/or the base of the finger.

A girl with Diamond-Blackfan syndrome and hypopituitarism was suspected of having pituitary haemosiderosis because of the clinical picture and the long history of blood transfusions. On T1-weighted MR images the pituitary exhibited a markedly hypointense anterior lobe (mimicking the empty sella), suggesting iron deposition, while on T2W MRI the low signal of the pituitary was surrounded by the high signal of the CSF. MR may be considered the examination of choice for detecting iron overload in the pituitary.

Superficial keratectomy (SK) is the manual dissection of the superficial corneal layers (epithelium, Bowman's layer, and sometimes superficial stroma). SK is done using a surgical blade or diamond burr. Some surgeons use intraoperative mitomycin C 0.02% or amniotic membrane transplantation to improve surgical outcomes. This literature review shows that SK remains an effective method for different indications, including tissue diagnosis, excision of corneal degenerations, dystrophies, scarring, recurrent corneal erosions, and retained corneal foreign body.

Loss of duodenal tissue around the pancreatic and common bile ducts presents a challenge to abdominal surgeons. Available methods to correct the problem include duodenojejunostomy, diamond duodenoplasty, serosal patching, mucosal pedicle patching from the ileum or jejunum, and gastric island patching. The choice of procedure must be tailored to the nature of the defect, the amount of tissue lost and the amount of peritoneal contamination. We believe that jejunal mucosal pedicle patching is a reasonable choice in most instances.

Zygomatic hypoplasia can be an exceedingly difficult proposition for the surgeon treating facial deformity. The classical approach would be a coronal access, which is time-consuming, leaves a long scar on the scalp that shows in patients with balding patterns, and carries the risk of permanent facial weakness. The Edinburgh technique presents a minimal access approach to the zygomatic osteotomy. This is performed through local incisions and a bone cut made using hand-held diamond-coated wire that mobilizes the entire zygoma.
