Bioactive Compounds from Citrus-Processing By-Products: A Narrative Review of Physical-Assisted and Conventional Extraction Technologies Plus Downstream Applications.

Citrus processing generates massive volumes of citrus-processing by-products rich in polyphenols, pectin, and essential oils, yet most of these materials are disposed of with low-value utilization, causing biomass loss and environmental pressure. Physical-assisted extraction techniques represent promising strategies for recovering high-value bioactive components from citrus-processing by-products. This narrative review assesses mainstream conventional and physical-assisted extraction routes (acid-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, microwave-assisted, and supercritical CO2 extraction) for phenolic

Comparative Analysis of Pesticide Use Determinants Among Smallholder Farmers From Costa Rica and Uganda.

Pesticides are used globally in agriculture and pose a threat to the health of farmers, communities, and the environment. Smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries have generally a low socio-economic status and educational level. Consequently, they are particularly vulnerable to negative impacts of pesticides on their health, yields, or land. In a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices study, we compared the pest management practices between a market-oriented farming system in Zarcero County, Costa Rica, and a subsistence-based farming system in Wakiso District, Uganda. We conducted

Infection Prevention and Control in Pediatric Ambulatory Settings.

Since the American Academy of Pediatrics published its statement titled "Infection Prevention and Control in Pediatric Ambulatory Settings" in 2007, there have been significant changes that prompted this updated statement. Infection prevention and control is an integral part of pediatric practice in ambulatory medical settings as well as in hospitals. Infection prevention and control practices should begin at the time the ambulatory visit is scheduled. All health care personnel should be educated regarding the routes of transmission and techniques used to prevent the transmission of infectious

Attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and practices for over-the-counter syringe sales in community pharmacies: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are an important resource for people who inject drugs (PWID) to purchase over-the-counter (OTC) syringes. Access to sterile injection equipment can reduce the transmission of blood-borne illnesses. However, pharmacists and their staff ultimately use discretion over sales. OBJECTIVE: To identify staff attitudes, beliefs, knowledge, and practices in the sale of OTC syringes in community pharmacies. METHODS: This systematic review was reported according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and registered with PROSPERO (C

Impact of pesticide exposure in childhood.

Pesticides represent a wide variety of chemicals presented as different formulations and concentrations and used in different settings: agriculture, animal sanitary bath, domestic use, and vector control. Lack of awareness, poor agricultural practices, and inappropriate disposal of containers will increase the exposure and risk of health effects during childhood. The concern about children's exposure to pesticides is based on their toxic properties and the special vulnerability to the exposure, which may occur in different stages, from the prenatal period to infancy. Pesticide related diseases

Pathogen elimination and prevention within a regulated, Designated Pathogen Free, closed pig herd for long-term breeding and production of xenotransplantation materials.

BACKGROUND: We established a Source Animal (barrier) Facility (SAF) for generating designated pathogen-free (DPF) pigs to serve as donors of viable organs, tissues, or cells for xenotransplantation into clinical patients. This facility was populated with caesarian derived, colostrum deprived (CDCD) piglets, from sows of conventional-specific (or specified) pathogen-free (SPF) health status in six cohorts over a 10-month period. In all cases, CDCD piglets fulfilled DPF status including negativity for porcine circovirus (PCV), a particularly environmentally robust and difficult to inactivate vir

["Standard precautions" practices among nurses in a university hospital in Western Algeria].

Health care workers are exposed daily to blood borne injury and infection with a high risk of hepatitis B or C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. In the 1980s, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed a set of protocols and guidelines known as standard precautions (SP) to prevent accidental transmission of pathogens. The SP should be followed for each intervention or delivery of care in order to protect health care workers from risks associated with contact with blood and other biological liquids. A survey was conducted in a Western Algerian universit

Risks of keratitis and patterns of use with disposable contact lenses.

Disposable soft contact lenses have been marketed as a safer alternative to conventional soft lenses. We undertook a case-control study of patients attending the casualty unit of an eye hospital to quantify the relative risk of keratitis in disposable lens wear and to establish associated patterns of use. All eligible contact lens users were identified and asked to complete a questionnaire (n=242). Keratitis, microbial or sterile, was the most common complication in disposable lens users, occurring in 16 of 41 subjects. The relative risks for all lens types were estimated by comparison with ri

The use of CDA best management practices and amalgam separators to improve the management of dental wastewater.

Concerns over the persistence and effects of mercury in the environment, particularly in wastewater, have increased significantly over the past decade. Because mercury is a component of dental amalgam, comprising about 50 percent of amalgam among other metals, in recent years the concern has affected dental practices and even educational curricula in the dental schools. While numbers vary widely from area to area, on average, it is estimated dentistry contributes less than 1 percent of the mercury generated from human activity to the environment. Despite dentistry's low contribution to the env

The epic project: developing national evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare associated infections. Phase I: Guidelines for preventing hospital-acquired infections. Department of Health (England).

In 1998, the Department of Health (England) commissioned the first phase of national evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare associated infections. These focused on developing a set of standard principles for preventing infections in hospitals together with guidelines for preventing hospital-acquired infections (HAI) associated with the use of short-term indwelling ureteral catheters in acute care and with central venous catheters in acute care. These guidelines are systematically developed broad statements (principles) of good practice that all practitioners can use and which can
