The impact of non-motor symptoms is often overlooked in favour of the motor symptoms when managing Parkinson's disease resulting in suboptimal patient outcomes. This study aimed to characterise the non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease in a cohort of Sri Lankan patients with a special focus on the impulsive control disorders and other compulsive behaviours (ICDs-CB) that had not been previously studied in this population. All patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease followed up at the National Hospital of Colombo, Sri Lanka were included. The presence or absence of non-motor symptoms a

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether initiation of an antidepressant is associated with the development of impulse control disorder (ICD) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD).
DESIGN: We performed a retrospective analysis utilizing data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). Two-sample Mann-Whitney tests were used for comparison of continuous variables and Pearson χ2 tests were used for categorical variables. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to assess the hazard of ICD with antidepressant exposure.
SETTING: The PPMI

Intermittent explosive disorder (IED), a disorder characterized by outbursts of affective aggression, is associated with deficits in regulating emotions. However, less is known about specific deficits in understanding and processing emotions in IED. This study sought to fill that gap by examining components of emotion processing (rumination, alexithymia, and empathy) in those with IED. Participants completed diagnostic interviews and self-report measures, and were categorized into three diagnostic groups: IED (n = 177), Psychiatric Control (PC; n = 171), and Healthy Volunteer (HV; n = 144). BACKGROUND: Excoriation disorder (ED) is characterized by recurring excoriation of the skin resulting in tissue damage, usually associated with emotional deregulation. Psychotherapy is a valuable treatment; however, no studies emphasize the patients' interactional aspect, nor the potential benefit of group treatment.
METHODS: We recruited a convenience sample of 38 individuals with ED according to DSM-5 criteria, in which 19 individuals proceeded to treatment, 10 with psychodrama group therapy (PGT), and 9 with support group therapy (SGT) in an open pilot study.
RESULTS: The entire sample pr

Among adolescents, heavy video game use and socializing online may be valued socially by peers, depending on gender and age, which can increase life satisfaction. However, heavy video gaming may also be linked to symptoms of Internet Gaming Disorder, which can decrease life satisfaction. Overall, when symptoms of Internet Gaming Disorder are present, do subjects experience decreased or increased life satisfaction, all other things being equal? The aim of this study was to explore the association between Internet Gaming Disorder symptoms and life satisfaction, while controlling for gender, age,

Impulse control disorder (ICD), including pathological gambling, hypersexuality, and compulsive shopping has been linked to dopaminergic treatment, especially treatment with dopamine agonists (DAs). However, patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may experience enhanced creativity during DA therapy, often manifesting as newfound artistic pursuits. Though ICD is very well recognized in the literature, enhanced creativity remains underreported, probably because, unlike ICD, enhanced creativity is often positive and rarely disruptive for patients and relatives. We studied 21 patients (20 patients

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence suggests deep brain stimulation can alter impulse control. Our objective was to prospectively evaluate the effects of subthalamic nucleus (STN) and globus pallidus internus (GPi) deep brain stimulation on impulse control disorders (ICDs) in the setting of a conservative dopamine reduction strategy.
METHODS: Patients (n = 37) undergoing de novo, unilateral STN or GPi DBS lead implantation were evaluated pre-operatively and 6-12 months post-operatively for the presence of ICDs using the Questionnaire for Impulsivity in Parkinson's disease (QUIP) and by clinical int

OBJECTIVES: To compare the striatum's resting-state functional connectivity in patients with Parkinson disease (PD) with and without impulse control disorders (ICDs).
METHODS: Twenty patients with PD and ICDs, 19 patients with PD but no ICDs, and 19 healthy controls underwent fMRI in the resting state. The ventral striatum, dorsal caudate, and anterior and posterior putamen were segmented semiautomatically. For each region of interest, a seed-based connectivity analysis was performed on preprocessed fMRI data mapped on the ipsilateral cortical surface. An additional cortical thickness analysi

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are a relatively recent addition to the behavioral spectrum of PD-related non-motor symptoms. Social and economic factors may play a role on the ICD phenotype of PD patients.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and characterize the clinical profile of ICDs in a sample of low-income, low-education PD patients with no social security benefits from a Latin American country.
METHODS: We included 300 consecutive PD patients and 150 control subjects. The presence of ICD and related disorders was assessed using a structured in

BACKGROUND: Apathy and impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are clinically important complications and may exist on a common behavioral spectrum of disorders of reward and motivation.
OBJECTIVE: To directly compare PD participants with apathy those with ICDs on range of demographic, neurologic and psychiatric measures.
METHODS: Ninety-nine non-demented PD participants (ICD, n = 35; apathy, n = 26; and controls, n = 38) were assessed in the study. Univariate statistics were used to compare the behavioral groups. A linear regression model was created with either apathy

A recent controlled clinical trial suggested a role for amantadine as a treatment for pathological gambling in patients with Parkinson disease (PD). Analyzing data from a large cross-sectional study of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in PD, amantadine use (n = 728), vs no amantadine use (n = 2,357), was positively associated with a diagnosis of any ICD (17.6% vs 12.4%, p < 0.001) and compulsive gambling specifically (7.4% vs 4.2%, p < 0.001). This amantadine association remained after controlling for covariates of amantadine use, including both dopamine agonist use and levodopa dosage. Furthe

The construct of emotion dysregulation increasingly has been used to explain diverse psychopathologies across the lifespan. The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS; K. L. Gratz & L. Roemer, 2004) represents the most comprehensive measure of the construct to date and exhibits good reliability and validity in adults; however, the measure has yet to be tested in adolescents. The present study examined the psychometric properties of the DERS in a community sample of 428 adolescents (ages 13-17 years). Exploratory factor analysis supported a 6-factor structure consistent with the 6 DERS

PURPOSE: This study examines the response to treatment in 17 patients with kleptomania who were treated with naltrexone as monotherapy for up to 3 years.
METHODS: Patients were treated with naltrexone (range, 50-200 mg/day) and were assessed at each clinic visit for stealing behavior, urges to steal, and for overall symptom severity. Liver function tests were examined regularly during treatment.
RESULTS: Comparison of baseline symptoms with the most recent follow-up visit showed that 13 patients (76.5%) reported reduction in their urges to steal, and 7 (41.1%) reported no stealing behavior.

This study provides descriptive information and preliminary first-year outcome data on the only overseas military gambling treatment option currently available. Implemented in January 2003 within the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program, U.S. Naval Hospital, Okinawa, Japan, gambling treatment was developed as a specific track within the overall substance abuse program. The present study explores the various considerations and requirements for setting up such a program, as well as a description of individuals seeking gambling treatment and preliminary outcome data. Participants consisted of a

Cognitive therapy is a relatively new approach to the treatment of pathological gambling. Theoretically, there are strong grounds for believing that cognitive treatments will be effective in helping individuals cut back and stop excessive levels of gambling. However, there is evidence that cognitive therapy for pathological gambling is being confused with cognitive-behaviour therapy. In this paper, the distinction between treatments that are cognitive and those that are cognitive-behavioural is highlighted. Such a distinction has strong implications for the manualisation of therapy. Additional
