The number of suicides by children and juveniles has remained similar or even slightly reduced in the last 5 years. This correlates with the constancy or slight reduction in the number of the under-20-years population over this period. Comparison with deaths due to suicide in Prussia (1894-1897) indicates that suicide in children and juveniles is not more common today than it was nearly a hundred years ago. Hanging and suffocation are the most frequent means, followed by poisoning. Less common are jumping from a height, shooting, drowning or stabbing. Cause of the suicide attempt is usually a …

The use of anti-inflammatory corticoids in anesthesia and resuscitation is a long-standing fact, but their indications, owing to the risks to which they expose certain patients and owing to the uncertitude concerning their mechanism of action, are still badly defined. If certain indications (attacks of asthma, laryngeal oedema, certain peri-lesional oedemas) are considered as being categorial, the usefulness of anti-inflammatory corticotherapy is being more and more and more debated in other pathological conditions : infectious or chemical pneumonias, drowning, shocked lung, post-traumatic neu…

As the second most common cause of coma and disorders of consciousness, cardiac arrest is defined as a cessation of cardiac mechanical activity and absence of circulation. Cardiac arrest can happen due to an intrinsic cardiac condition or secondary to noncardiac causes such as respiratory, neurologic, metabolic causes or external causes such as toxic ingestion, asphyxia, drowning, trauma, and other environmental exposures. While cardiac arrest resuscitation research and practice has evolved over decades, the overall survival to hospital discharge remains low across different types of cardiac a…

Pseudallescheria boydii is a rare cause of central nervous system infection characteristically presenting as a neutrophilic meningitis or multiple brain abscesses. Factors predisposing to central nervous system infection with this fungus include immunosuppression and near drowning. The organism is infrequently cultured from fluid obtained by lumbar puncture, delaying clinical recognition and appropriate antifungal therapy. All untreated patients with P boydii infection of the central nervous system died. We describe a patient who developed a persistent neutrophilic meningitis with focal neurol…

INTRODUCTION: New Zealand's (NZ) long coastline offers a diverse underwater environment with abundant opportunities for harvesting seafood and for recreation. Fatalities from snorkelling/breath-hold diving have been reported from the 1960s through to 2006. Those from 2007 to 2016 are reported here.
METHODS: The National Coronial Information System, the Australasian Diving Safety Foundation diving fatality database, and the Water Safety NZ "Drownbase" were searched and additional coronial data provided by the NZ Ministry of Justice. An anonymised database was created and analysed for multiple

Breath-hold diving as a recreational and competitive sports activity is on the increase. In this review physiological limitations and medical risks associated with breath-hold diving are discussed. Specific topics include hypoxia, ascent blackout, hyperventilation, squeeze or barotrauma of descent including effects on the pulmonary system, glossopharyngeal breathing, and decompression illness. It is also concluded that the health requirements for competitive breath-hold diving should follow essentially the same standards as used for SCUBA-diving.
