Two autopsy cases of cystic brain lesion in utero are reported. One of them was a donor infant of twin transfusion syndrome. The baby died immediately after birth and showed multicystic encephalomalacia in the distribution of the anterior cerebral artery. The second baby was a stillborn infant with thanatophoric dwarfism with associated chronic periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). It was suggested that the multicystic encephalomalacia and chronic PVL found in the first and second cases were caused by persistent circulatory disturbances in utero.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare, multiple congenital defect often called as Amsterdam dwarfism. The physical phenotype of CdLS includes low birth body weight, short stature and facio-cranial dysmorphia. The diagnosis of the syndrome is based on clinical grounds as there is no biochemical or chromosomal markers for CDLS that makes its diagnosis more complicated. The purpose of this paper is to present a clinical report of a boy emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome.

We report a girl with septo-optic dysplasia in association with subglottic stenosis, sagittal craniosynostosis, osteoporosis and dental anomalies. It is uncommon for patients with septo-optic dysplasia to have multiple, extra-cranial malformations. A number of differential diagnoses were considered in this case, including Cole-Carpenter syndrome, Pfeiffer syndrome and osteoglophonic dwarfism. However, none can account for all the abnormalities seen. We therefore believe that this is a previously unreported, but highly distinctive, phenotype.

Endocrine and metabolic disorders affecting puppies and kittens from birth until 6 months of age may manifest as clinical problems related to growth, water metabolism (polydipsia or polyuria), or as episodic weakness. Endocrine and metabolic disorders that affect stature, such as pituitary or hypothyroid dwarfism, present to the veterinarian for assessment of delayed or aberrant growth. Conversely, juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus cause excessive thirst, urination, and difficulty in house-breaking.

Cockayne's syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized clinically by cachectic dwarfism, cutaneous photosensitivity, loss of adipose tissue, mental retardation, skeletal and neurological abnormalities, and pigmentary degeneration of the retina. Dental caries is a common finding. The case of a 4-year-old male with Cockayne's syndrome is presented. A dental rehabilitation involving outpatient surgery is described including the difficulties encountered because of a small oral cavity and restricted mandibular range of motion.

A 10-year-old male with interstitial deletion of chromosome 1[46,XY,del(1)(q25q32.1)] is reported. Clinical features of the patient included dwarfism, severe mental retardation, microcephaly, flat nasal bridge, low-set ears, short neck, brachydactyly, clinodactyly of the 5th fingers and bilateral cryptorchidism. Comparison of phenotypic characteristics of the present case with those of six cases previously described with similar deletions of chromosome 1 permits the delineation of an identifiable syndrome.

The clinical features in a new non-familial case of Cockayne's syndrome comprised the usual components: dwarfism with microcephaly, severe mental subnormality, progeria-like appearance of the face, pigmented retinopathy, and severe perceptive deafness. The patient also suffered from grand mal epilepsy and died in status epilepticus at the age of 22 years. The neuropathological findings were severe microencephaly, widespread calcifying vasopathy with some secondary degenerative changes in the contiguous tissue, and granular ependymitis.

We present the case of a 3-year-old boy with post-natal growth failure, microcephaly, developmental delay, facial dysmorphism, an evolving pigmentary retinopathy, pituitary hypoplasia, micropenis, and growth hormone (GH) deficiency. He has a microcephalic osteodysplastic slender-bone disorder with disharmonic delayed osseous maturation, most closely resembling patients with microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD II). Intrauterine growth retardation, a universal finding in the MOPD II, was absent in our patient.

We describe 2 sibs with lethal, prenatal-onset cortical hyperostosis. Antenatal sonographic diagnosis of the first sib was that of short limb dwarfism and thoracic dysplasia (nonspecific), possibly osteogenesis imperfecta. The second sib had a similar appearance on ultrasonography. The thickened, irregularly echodense diaphyses were an aid to diagnosis. Although sporadic cases and autosomal dominant inheritance have been described, an autosomal recessive cause for the lethal prenatal onset cases cannot be excluded.

One of the first patients studied by Cleaver on the DNA repair defect to ultraviolet light damage in xeroderma pigmentosum has been subjected to autopsy examination. This patient had the DeSanctis-Cacchione syndrome (microcephaly, dwarfism, mental deficiency, and choreoathetosis). Her autopsy findings were similar to those of the other three patients with this syndrome, emphasizing olivopontocerebellar atrophy, who underwent autopsy. The patient apparently could not tolerate psoralens because of increased incidence of carcinoma formation.

We report on 2 sibs with manifestations of the Kenny-Caffey syndrome born to normal, consanguineous parents. Clinical manifestations included dwarfism, internal cortical thickening and medullary stenosis of tubular bones, poorly ossified skull bones, and hypocalcemia. The younger of the two died during a tonic convulsion. The older had neonatal hypoparathyroidism and is now a short intelligent, 1-year-old child. This family gives new support to the existence of an autosomal recessive variant of the syndrome.

We report on 2 unrelated boys with a distinctive facial appearance of microtia, atretic external auditory meati, small mandible, and microstomia, who also have a skeletal dysplasia, microcephaly, and joint contractures. The skeletal abnormalities, short stature, and microcephaly led to an initial diagnosis of osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism; however, the birth weight of one of the children is not low enough to firmly establish this diagnosis. The similarities were detected by the matching program of the London Dysmorphology Data-base.

A case of Russell-Silver dwarfism is described in which surgically corrected inguinal cryptorchidism was followed by advanced embryonal carcinoma. This case is noteworthy because 42 per cent of male Russell-Silver dwarfs have cryptorchidism, yet testicular malignancy in this syndrome has not been reported previously. Risk factors for the development of testicular cancer in this case include cryptorchidism, inguinal hernia and testicular atrophy. Optimal management of testicular abnormalities in the Russell-Silver dwarf is discussed.

Mucopolysaccharidosis-II (MPS-II) and MPS-I are both characterized by gargoylist dwarfism. MPS-II is of X-linked recessive heredity. Five cases of MPS-II-B in our series were followed up for ten years. Corneal opacity and dysmnesia were not found in all of them. Although MPS-II possessed many radiologic similarities to MPS-I, the former presented certain characteristic features such as butterfish-like vertebra, and small triangular malformation of carpal bones and tarsal scaphoid etc.

Achondroplasia is the most common form of skeletal dysplasia dwarfism that manifests with stunted stature and disproportionate limb shortening. Achondroplasia is of dental interest because of its characteristic craniofacial features which include relative macrocephaly, depressed nasal bridge and maxillary hypoplasia. Presence of large head, implanted shunt, airway obstruction and difficulty in head control require special precautions during dental management. Craniofacial manifestations and considerations in dental management are presented in 11-year-old female patient with achondroplasia.

The basal encephaloceles refer to rare entities and they correspond to herniation of brain tissue through defects of skull along the cribiform plate or the sphenoid bone. A rare morning glory syndrome, with characteristic retinal defect has been reported in association with basal encephaloceles. Hypophysis hormonal deficiencies may occur. We accounted for a pituitary dwarfism with delayed diagnosed transsphenoidal encephalocele associated with morning glory syndrome, showing the alterations found in retinography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

Unanticipated difficult endotracheal intubations can pose challenges for the anesthesiologist. Risks include airway injury, hypoxemia, and death. There is intubation difficulty in various conditions including Downs syndrome, achondroplasia, acromegaly, and dwarfism. We describe difficulty in intubating the trachea with an appropriate sized endotracheal tube in two young male patients with hypogonadism presenting for neurosurgical procedures under general anesthesia. We discuss the role of hypogonadism and the effects of gonadotropin hormones on pubertal laryngeal growth in male patients.

We report a moderately mentally retarded 7-year-old male with a unique combination of clinical symptoms and signs: severe pre- and postnatal growth retardation, scaling skin and quadrispasticity, hypospadias grade 2 and hydro-uretero nephrosis, postaxial polydactyly type B on the right hand. Normal fibroblast enzyme activities of fatty aldehyde dehydrogenase and NADPH cytochrome C reductase were not consistent with the diagnosis of Sjögren-Larsson syndrome. The nosology of 'bird-headed' dwarfism is briefly discussed.
