[In vivo dynamic changes of inner ear guinea pigs with 9.4 T esla MRI].

Objective: To observe the imaging characteristics of guinea pig cochlear structure using 9.4 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging system at different time intervals of contrast agent distribution in the inner ear. Methods: Form May 2015 to October 2015, five albino guinea pigs were injected with Gd-DTPA via the right internal jugular vein (3 ml/kg). Inner ears were scanned with 9.4T MRI. At the 10 th, 30 th, 60 th, 90 th and 120 th minutes post-Gd-DTPA, we took inner ear images to detect changes of endolymph and perilymph. Using Image J software, we acquired MRI gray value through the first, secon

New Imaging Findings of Incomplete Partition Type III Inner Ear Malformation and Literature Review.

Incomplete partition type III, also referred to as X-linked deafness, is a rare genetic inner ear malformation. Its characteristic CT findings, including bulbous dilation of the internal auditory canal and absence of the modiolus with the interscalar septa present, have been well-recognized. In this series of 19 cases, we report the abnormalities of the vestibule and semicircular canals and provide a comprehensive description of their CT and MR imaging findings. The inner ear malformations in incomplete partition type III were bilateral and basically symmetric, with involvement of the internal

Inner ear fluid-attenuated inversion recovery MRI signal intensity in dogs with vestibular disease.

The inner ear contains endolymph and perilymph. The second is comparable and in continuity with the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) so it is expected to suppress in fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) if normal. Even though inner ear FLAIR abnormalities have been extensively described in humans with inner ear disease, its diagnostic value in dogs is yet to be proven. The goal of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the diagnostic utility of FLAIR MRI in dogs with vestibular disease. A review of medical records identified 101 dogs that had brain

Inner ear ossification and mineralization kinetics in human embryonic development - microtomographic and histomorphological study.

Little is known about middle and inner ear development during the second and third parts of human fetal life. Using ultra-high resolution Microcomputed Tomography coupled with bone histology, we performed the first quantitative middle and inner ear ossification/mineralization evaluation of fetuses between 17 and 39 weeks of gestational age. We show distinct ossification paces between ossicles, with a belated development of the stapes. A complete cochlear bony covering is observed within the time-frame of the onset of hearing, whereas distinct time courses of ossification for semicircular canal

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss associated with inner ear lesions detected by magnetic resonance imaging.

Although recent advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques have contributed to the detection of tiny lesions in the internal auditory canal (IAC) that may be responsible for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), there have been relatively few studies on the clinical characteristics of intra-labyrinthine hemorrhage (ILH) and labyrinthitis versus those regarding IAC tumors. Our purpose was to investigate the frequency of those IAC lesions on MRI and their clinical characteristics. Initial MRIs of 200 patients with SSNHL (93 men, 107 women; mean age = 48.61 years, range: 18-84 y

Pathophysiology of the inner ear after blast injury caused by laser-induced shock wave.

The ear is the organ that is most sensitive to blast overpressure, and ear damage is most frequently seen after blast exposure. Blast overpressure to the ear results in sensorineural hearing loss, which is untreatable and is often associated with a decline in the quality of life. In this study, we used a rat model to demonstrate the pathophysiological and structural changes in the inner ear that replicate pure sensorineural hearing loss associated with blast injury using laser-induced shock wave (LISW) without any conductive hearing loss. Our results indicate that threshold elevation of the au

Magnetic resonance imaging of the inner ear after both intratympanic and intravenous gadolinium injections.

CONCLUSION: Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), endolymphatic hydrops could be visualized on both sides after intratympanic (IT) injection of gadolinium contrast agents (Gd) in one symptomatic ear and subsequent intravenous (IV) Gd injection. The MRI revealed a difference of intracochlear Gd distribution between the IT injection side and the contralateral IV side. OBJECTIVES: Although the IT method allows greater enhancement of the perilymph, many patients feel reluctance in receiving the IT injection in asymptomatic ears. We attempted to evaluate endolymphatic space size on both sides wi

Nutrient-enhanced diet reduces noise-induced damage to the inner ear and hearing loss.

Oxidative stress has been implicated broadly as a cause of cell death and neural degeneration in multiple disease conditions; however, the evidence for successful intervention with dietary antioxidant manipulations has been mixed. In this study, we investigated the potential for protection of cells in the inner ear using a dietary supplement with multiple antioxidant components, which were selected for their potential interactive effectiveness. Protection against permanent threshold shift (PTS) was observed in CBA/J mice maintained on a diet supplemented with a combination of β-carotene, vitam

Inner-ear function test in cases of posterior canal-type benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Otolaryngologists typically perform diagnoses and offer medical treatment for vestibular dysfunction. This vestibular dysfunction manifests as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease, vestibular neuronitis, and so on. The etiology of BPPV is still not clear, so in this article we discuss inner-ear function, etiology, and factors related to BPPV. We examined by pure-tone audiometry and hot and cold caloric tests patients whom we identified as having diagnosed posterior canal-type BPPV. We observed canal paresis at a high rate on the affected side (p < .01). The term of re

Lmx1a maintains proper neurogenic, sensory, and non-sensory domains in the mammalian inner ear.

Lmx1a is a LIM homeodomain-containing transcription factor, which is required for the formation of multiple organs. Lmx1a is broadly expressed in early stages of the developing inner ear, but its expression is soon restricted to the non-sensory regions of the developing ear. In an Lmx1a functional null mutant, dreher (dr(J)/dr(J)), the inner ears lack a non-sensory structure, the endolymphatic duct, and the membranous labyrinth is poorly developed. These phenotypes are consistent with Lmx1a's role as a selector gene. More importantly, while all three primary fates of the inner ear - neural, se

Treatment of corticosteroid-responsive autoimmune inner ear disease with methotrexate: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: A number of therapies have been proposed for the long-term management of corticosteroid-responsive, rapidly progressive, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (autoimmune inner ear disease [AIED]). Methotrexate has emerged as the benchmark agent but has not been rigorously evaluated for hearing improvement in patients with AIED. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of long-term methotrexate in maintaining hearing improvements achieved with glucocorticoid (prednisone) therapy in patients with AIED. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial co

Downregulation of otospiralin, a novel inner ear protein, causes hair cell degeneration and deafness.

Mesenchymal nonsensory regions of the inner ear are important structures surrounding the neurosensory epithelium that are believed to participate in the ionic homeostasis of the cochlea and vestibule. We report here the discovery of otospiralin, an inner ear-specific protein that is produced by fibrocytes from these regions, including the spiral ligament and spiral limbus in the cochlea and the maculae and semicircular canals in the vestibule. Otospiralin is a novel 6.4 kDa protein of unknown function that shares a protein motif with the gag p30 core shell nucleocapsid protein of type C retrov

Cochlear blood flow measurement in patients with Ménière's disease and other inner ear disorders.

To identify an eventual vascular aetiology in different diseases with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), the cochlear blood flow (CoBF) was measured using laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) in 69 patients with Ménière's disease (MD), 38 patients with progressive SNHL and 8 patients with sudden deafness. The mean CoBF amplitude at rest was 0.70 mV (SD 0.25) for patients with MD, 0.66 mV (SD 0.21) for patients with SNHL and 0.69 mV (SD 0.23) for those with sudden deafness. No statistically significant difference was observed between the groups with respect to the CoBF amplitudes at rest or during the

Axial specification for sensory organs versus non-sensory structures of the chicken inner ear.

A mature inner ear is a complex labyrinth containing multiple sensory organs and nonsensory structures in a fixed configuration. Any perturbation in the structure of the labyrinth will undoubtedly lead to functional deficits. Therefore, it is important to understand molecularly how and when the position of each inner ear component is determined during development. To address this issue, each axis of the otocyst (embryonic day 2.5, E2.5, stage 16-17) was changed systematically at an age when axial information of the inner ear is predicted to be fixed based on gene expression patterns. Transplan

[Pressure relations between endocranial and intracochlear fluid spaces in patients with inner ear diseases].

Intracranial pressure is transmitted to the perilymph of the cochlea via the cochlear aquaeduct and via Reissner's membrane to the endolymph. The "Tympanic Membrane Displacement Analyser (TDA)" is a new device that may be a useful non-invasive method to show intracranial and intracochlear pressure changes indirectly measured by tympanic membrane displacement during stapedial reflex contraction. The TDA was utilised in 20 normal persons and in 29 patients with unilateral diseases of the inner ear. No significant differences in the tympanic membrane displacement were found between patients with

Toxic effects on inner ear of noxious agents passing through the round window membrane.

The effects on inner ear of Xylocain, EMLA, phenol, endotoxin and hydrocortisone were analysed before treatment and 24 h-6 months after instillation of each drug into the round window (RW) niche, where the substance was left. Inner ear function was determined by repeated auditory brainstem recordings (ABR). All cochleae were analysed morphologically at the light microscopic level. Hydrocortisone, Xylocain and endotoxin caused functional changes without morphological correlates, even at long-term follow-up. In contrast, phenol and EMLA caused both functional impairment and graded morphological

Recovery and probable persistence of cytomegalovirus in human inner ear fluid without cochlear damage.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) was recovered from a 5-month-old infant with probable congenital infection. In life, no hearing impairment had been observed. Auditory brain stem evoked responses were bilaterally intact. At necropsy, both temporal bones were morphologically normal, as demonstrated by light and electron microscopy. Sensory hair cells of the organ of Corti appeared intact. Cytomegalovirus was recovered from a mixture of perilymph and endolymph, but not the brain, CSF, or vitreous humor. This appears to be the first report of an individual with an inner ear CMV infection in which neither st

Potential role of angiotensin II in noise-induced increases in inner ear blood flow.

Guinea pigs were exposed to 120 dB white noise for 30 min and evidenced a four-fold elevation in plasma concentration of the potent vasoconstricting hormone angiotensin II (AII). Anesthetized animals received intra-arterial injections of AII at doses that approximated the endogenous levels measured following noise exposure. A marked decrease in skin blood flow was observed with a concomitant increase in cochlear blood flow as measured by laser Doppler flowmeters. Increased cochlear blood flow appeared to be secondary to the increases in systemic blood pressure induced by AII. These findings su

Dexamethasone Dosing of Human Perilymph Compared for Common Delivery Protocols Using Inner Ear Simulations.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Locally applied dexamethasone therapy of the inner ear is commonly used to treat disorders such as Meniere's disease and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Dexamethasone is also being used in conjunction with cochlear implantation to reduce electrode impedances and fibrous tissue formation around the implant. The variety of formulations currently in use makes it difficult to compare the dosing levels resulting from different therapies. METHODS: We have used the FluidSIM cochlear fluid simulation program to calculate perilymph and plasma dexamethasone le
