[Anthropometric measurements of moderate concha-type microtia after auricular cartilage unfolding].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the anthropometric changes of the auricle after auricular cartilage unfolding in moderate concha-type microtia patients, so as to provide the basis to help evaluate surgical timing and prognostic. METHODS: A total of 33 children with moderate concha-type microtia, who were treated with auricular cartilage unfolding between October 2016 and September 2018 and met the inclusive criteria, were included in the study. There were 24 boys and 9 girls with an average age of 1.4 years (range, 1-3 years). Sixteen cases were left ears and 17 cases were right ears. The follow-up tim

Surgical management of retraction pockets of the pars tensa with cartilage and perichondrial grafts.

Stable, self-cleansing retraction pockets of the pars tensa are common incidental findings and require no treatment. In other cases, recurrent discharge occurs and there may also be associated conductive hearing loss. In a minority of cases, cholesteatoma may develop. This paper presents the results of surgery using a graft composed of cartilage and perichondrium for retraction pockets involving the posterior half of the tympanic membrane, as well as early results using a larger graft designed to manage retraction of the entire tympanic membrane. Data on 51 patients with posterior retraction p

Microvascular reconstruction of nose and ear defects using composite auricular free flaps.

Two cases using composite auricular free flaps, based on the superficial temporal vessels, in the reconstruction of full-thickness defects of the nose and ear are reported. This composite free flap can be based on either the superficial temporal or the posterior auricular vessels depending on the defect to be reconstructed. The superficial temporal vessels can also be used in reversed flow to obtain a vascular pedicle of sufficient length for microvascular anastomosis. The anatomical vascular features of the flap make it possible to reconstruct various facial defects with freedom of design.

[Partial anterior chondrotomy in the correction of prominent ears. Apropos of 140 re-examined cases].

336 patients have been operated for protruding ears. 140 of them have a long term postoperative follow-up. The anterior partial chondrotomies are opposed to the other surgical procedures and give the opportunity for a comparative and retrospective study. Surgical indications and procedures, use of antibiotics, postoperative follow-up, and complications are studied. 95% of results are good or very good whatever the surgical procedure. The authors remain the posterior and anterior access for partial chondrotomy.

Actinic granulomas and relapsing polychondritis.

A patient developed concomitantly chondritis of the two auricles, diffuse cutaneous vasculitis and actinic granulomas. Alterations in skin and cartilage were prominent in the elastic tissue. Anticollagen type II antibodies were absent from the serum and there was no deposit of immunoreactants in cartilages. In this form of relapsing polychondritis, the pathomechanism resembles that of diffuse actinic arteritis as proposed by O'Brien. It is concluded that relapsing polychondritis may represent a heterogeneous syndrome with regard to its pathogenesis.

Respiratory obstruction due to relapsing polychondritis in a Chinese male.

A case of relapsing polychondritis in a 30-year-old Chinese male is reported. The patient showed the following features: dyspnoea; hoarseness of voice; cauliflower deformity of the right ear; upper tracheal stenosis; swelling of the lower part of the sternum; pain in the costal cartilages. Airway obstruction as a presenting feature (as in this case) is unusual. The aetiology, clinical features and management of relapsing polychondritis are briefly discussed.

3D printing tissue-engineered scaffolds for auricular reconstruction.

Congenital microtia is the most common cause of auricular defects, with a prevalence of approximately 5.18 per 10,000 individuals. Autologous rib cartilage grafting is the leading treatment modality at this stage of auricular reconstruction currently. However, harvesting rib cartilage may lead to donor site injuries, such as pneumothorax, postoperative pain, chest wall scarring, and deformity. Therefore, in the pursuit of better graft materials, biomaterial scaffolds with great histocompatibility, precise control of morphology, non-invasiveness properties are gradually becoming a new research

Characteristics of cartilage engineered from human pediatric auricular cartilage.

In the repair of cartilage defects, autologous tissue offers the advantage of lasting biocompatibility. The ability of bovine chondrocytes isolated from hyaline cartilage to generate tissue-engineered cartilage in a predetermined shape, such as a human ear, has been demonstrated; however, the potential of chondrocytes isolated from human elastic cartilage remains unknown. In this study, the authors examined the multiplication characteristics of human auricular chondrocytes and the ability of these cells to generate new elastic cartilage as a function of the length of time they are maintained i

One-Year Results of Ear Reconstruction with 3D Printed Implants.

PURPOSE: External ear reconstruction has been a challenging subject for plastic surgeons for decades. Popular methods using autologous costal cartilage or polyethylene still have their drawbacks. With the advance of three-dimensional (3D) printing technique, bioscaffold engineering using synthetic polymer draws attention as an alternative. This is a clinical trial of ear reconstruction using 3D printed scaffold, presented with clinical results after 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2021 to 2022, five adult patients with unilateral microtia underwent two-staged total ear reconstruction usin

Relapsing polychondritis and retroperitoneal fibrosis in an 8-year-old boy.

An 8-year-old boy with symptoms of relapsing polychondritis for five years developed retroperitoneal fibrosis and ureteral obstruction. In addition to involvement of the cartilage of his joints, ear, and nose, there was significant arterial involvement. The patient had a very good response to adrenal corticosteroid therapy. After one year of follow-up, he has had a definite increase in joint mobility and has normal renal function.

Pervasiveness of intestinal protozoan and worm incursion in IDP's (North Waziristan agency, KPK-Pakistan) children of 6-16 years.

Generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI), an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the ENPP1 gene, manifests with extensive mineralization of the cardiovascular system. A spontaneous asj-2J mutant mouse has been characterized as a model for GACI. Previous studies focused on phenotypic characterization of skin and vascular tissues. This study further examined the ectopic mineralization phenotype of cartilage, collagen-rich tendons and ligaments in this mouse model. The mice were placed on either control diet or the "acceleration diet" for up to 12 weeks of age. Soft co

Trans-tragal incision for improved exposure of diacapitular and condylar neck fractures.

The authors present a modification of the preauricular approach that improves the exposure of the condyle whilst reducing diacapitular and condylar neck fractures. The incision is a combination of the hockey-stick and endaural incisions. Its inferior part runs within the ear on the posterior face of the tragus; the tragal cartilage is transected together with the retrotragal skin and included in the anterior skin flap. Between May 2009 and December 2010, 16 patients with diacapitular or condylar neck fractures were treated with this approach. All patients showed good occlusion postoperatively

Cartilage perichondrium composite graft (CPCG) in pediatric tympanoplasty.

Different policies on the treatment of tympanic membrane perforation in the pediatric age group continue to exist. Thirty patients were included in this study over a period of 2 years, where cartilage perichondrium composite graft (CPCG) was used to close the tympanic membrane perforation. Successful drum closure was achieved in 86.6% of cases, regardless of the site of perforation or the status of the operated ear. The graft was taken from the tragus and was placed in an underlay fashion with cartilage towards the promontory and the perichondrium immediately to the tympanic membrane remnants.

Relapsing polychondritis presenting as meningoencephalitis with valvular abnormality: a case report.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare rheumatologic disorder that is characterized by recurrent inflammation of selected connective tissue sites and destruction of cartilage throughout the body. We report a case of newly diagnosed relapsing polychondritis in a 40-year-old man presenting with episcleritis, deformed "cauliflower" ears, aortic regurgitation, and aseptic meningoencephalitis. Steroid therapy was instituted with good resolution of his clinical symptoms.

Posterior scoring of the scapha as a refinement in aesthetic otoplasty.

Numerous otoplasty techniques have been developed during the past decade. However, no single ideal technique is universally adopted. The creation of a normal scapha with prevention of retroprotrusion of the helix after creation of an aesthetically well-folded antihelix remains controversial and is regarded as a neglected aspect of otoplasty. The present study is a report of creating a natural fold of cartilage using a combination technique of cartilage incision at the border between the antihelix and scapha, with medial scoring of the scapha and lateral scoring of the antihelix region. Sutures
