BACKGROUND: Suicidal behavior among physicians is a significant concern globally, with various factors contributing to increased risk. Physicians in Türkiye are a group facing significant psychological distress due to challenging work conditions, economic instability, and violence in the healthcare system. Understanding the specific risk factors and attitudes contributing to this elevated suicidal behavior can inform the development of targeted interventions and support mechanisms for improving the well-being of physicians in Türkiye. This study aims to investigate suicidal behavior among Turk

BACKGROUND: Nutritional rehabilitation is essential for recovery after esophagectomy. However, food avoidance behavior is common and may compromise nutritional intake, quality of life, and postoperative recovery. This study aimed to explore the factors influencing food avoidance behavior and the psychological and contextual processes underlying such behavior after esophagectomy, with the aim of informing targeted psychosocial and behavioral interventions and individualized dietary management.
METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was used. Guided by the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM), a semi-

The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated economic stressors have profoundly reshaped consumer eating behaviors, presenting an urgent and underexplored challenge for the academic community. This interdisciplinary review critically examines how these disruptions have influenced both food approach and food avoidance patterns, offering a structured analysis of eight key behavioral parameters: Hunger (H), Food Responsiveness (FR), Emotional Overeating (EOE), Enjoyment of Food (EF), Satiety Responsiveness (SR), Emotional Under Eating (EUE), Food Fussiness (FF), and Slowness in Eating (SE). Harm reduction is a framework that places substance use on a spectrum from total abstinence to continued controlled use. Protective behavioral strategies (PBS) are a set of individually implemented harm reduction strategies that have shown to reduce the rate of use and severity of consequences from risky behaviors. Previous research has shown that PBS use effectively reduces negative consequences. The present study provides an overview of the literature on PBS measures for various risk behaviors, and common interventions used in conjunction with PBS. Of the articles reviewed, 15 validated PBS

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are an identified risk factor for the social and emotional development of children. What is less known is the long-term effects of ACEs when poverty and ACEs coincide.
OBJECTIVE: Using longitudinal cohort-panel data, we examined whether exposure to ACEs by the age of three among poor children would longitudinally result in behavioral problems at ages three, five, nine, and 15, after controlling for mothers' socioeconomic status and their children's characteristics.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used a subsample of 2750 children and their parent

The effective control of an outbreak of a highly contagious disease such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in the United States will require a strong partnership between the animal agriculture industry and the government. However, because of the diverse number of economic, social, and psychological influences affecting livestock producers, their complete cooperation during an outbreak may not be assured. We conducted interviews with 40 individuals involved in the Texas cattle industry in order to identify specific behaviors where producer participation or compliance may be reduced. Through quali

Plasmodium knowlesi malaria infection in humans has been reported throughout southeast Asia. The communities at risk are those living in areas where Macaque monkeys and Anopheles mosquito are present. Zoonotic malaria control is challenging due to the presence of the reservoir host and the possibility of human-vector-human transmission. Current control measures, including insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), are insufficient to address this threat due to gaps in protection associated with outdoor and early evening vector biting and social and economic activities,

As the COVID-19 pandemic progresses, more African Americans than whites are falling ill and dying from the virus and more are losing livelihoods from the accompanying recession. The virus thereby exploits structural disadvantages, rooted partly in historical and contemporary anti-Black sentiments, working against African Americans. These include higher rates of comorbid illness and more limited health care access, higher rates of disadvantageous labor market positioning and community and housing conditions, greater exposure to long-term care residence, and higher incarceration rates. COVID-19

This study first investigated the prevalence of emotional and physical maltreatment by teachers in South Korea and then identified factors that predict student maltreatment by teachers. Specific areas of interest were the associations between student demographic characteristics (gender and grade level), family (economic status), and school experience (academic performance and student-teacher relationships) and how these characteristics were related to student maltreatment. Data were obtained by questionnaire from a random sample of 1,777 students in middle schools in Seoul, the largest metropo

Older adults are at increased risk of foodborne illness due to age-related changes in immune function. Previous research has identified discrepancies between food safety knowledge, attitudes, self-reported practices, and observed behaviors among older adults; however, why potentially unsafe food safety practices occur is unknown. The Health Belief Model identifies modifying factors as influences on health behaviors, yet these factors are seldom considered in consumer food safety research. This study aimed to explore the modifying factors influencing domestic food safety beliefs and behaviors a

BACKGROUND: Mothers physiologically buffer key milk nutrient content against nutritional stress. How this is nested in upstream behavioral buffering is not well understood.
OBJECTIVES: The study explored whether pastoralists and agropastoralists' economic or other behavioral coping strategies against droughts, such as livestock sales and child fosterage, influence maternal risk for malnutrition or milk nutrient content.
METHODS: Using data from 221 breastfeeding mothers in drought-stricken northern Kenya, we estimated generalized structural equation models to evaluate pathways linking behavi

BACKGROUND: Several studies suggest that prosocial behaviors gradually increase with age, but others report that prosocial behaviors are fixed traits with only minor fluctuations throughout the lifespan. Early life stress may help explain these inconsistencies, as distinct types of stress have been negatively or positively associated with prosocial behaviors.
OBJECTIVE: This current investigation used two studies to test whether distinct types of early life stress moderated the association between age and prosocial behavior.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Study 1 recruited undergraduate students

Objectives: Latinos in the United States experience a disproportionate number of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and higher use of alcohol and illegal drugs, which has been attributed to increases in risk behaviors following immigration. Whereas substantial research documents these behavioral changes, little is known about how immigrants increase their risk or why some immigrants increase their risk and other immigrants do not. This study explored how the social and normative context affects sexual and substance use behaviors among Latino immigrant men in a midsized Midwes

Rewards in the natural environment are rarely predicted with complete certainty. Uncertainty relating to future rewards has typically been defined as the variance of the potential outcomes. However, the asymmetry of predicted reward distributions, known as skewness, constitutes a distinct but neuroscientifically underexplored risk term that may also have an impact on preference. By changing only reward magnitudes, we study skewness processing in equiprobable ternary lotteries involving only gains and constant probabilities, thus excluding probability distortion or loss aversion as mechanisms f

In the present study, we showed that, in a social gambling task, individuals are influenced more by the type of social interaction than by the pattern of gains and losses. More precisely, the neural responses, as well as the level of pleasantness/unpleasantness following gains and losses, are modulated by social interaction factors. Here we present an Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) study in which three groups of participants were compared. Subjects were engaged in gambling tasks differing with regard to social factors: in a first condition, there was no social context; in a second condition,

Cryptorchidism is the most common non-lethal congenital defect of the male reproductive system in sheep, with potential economic consequences for flock management. This study investigated the incidence, testicular morphology, ultrasonographic characteristics, semen quality, and sexual behavior of bilateral cryptorchid Sarda rams. Slaughterhouse inspections of 2360 lambs showed an incidence of 0.87% cryptorchidism. Cryptorchid testes were significantly rounder and lighter than intact testes, indicating impaired development in affected animals. Ultrasonography of 15 adult bilateral cryptorchid r

Behavioral decision-making research has been exceptionally useful in the quest of the social sciences to understand human nature. A frequent assumption of this research is that using strangers as anonymous interaction partners allows for the clearest demonstration of basic human nature. But a diverse array of literature - from social and clinical psychology to ethology - suggests that a stranger is far from a "baseline partner." We argue against the overreliance on strangers in economic games and that instead of one baseline partner, typical relationships should fall into basic types of partne

BACKGROUND: Feather pecking is a well-known problem in layer flocks that causes animal welfare restrictions and contributes to economic losses. Birds' gut microbiota has been linked to feather pecking. This study aims to characterize the microbial communities of two laying hen lines divergently selected for high (HFP) and low (LFP) feather pecking and investigates if the microbiota is associated with feather pecking or agonistic behavior.
METHODS: Besides phenotyping for the behavioral traits, microbial communities from the digesta and mucosa of the ileum and caeca were investigated using tar

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure has been shown in general as a major environmental risk factor and deserves attention in vulnerable population groups. The aim of the project is to analyze the relationships among the ETS and behavior and health in 6−15-year-old children in Slovakia. The status of physical and mental health of children in relation to exposure to tobacco smoke was examined in a representative group of 1478 school children. The methods used, included anonymous questionnaires filled in by parents, Columbia Impairment Scale (CIS), Behavior Problem Index (BPI) and an
