Assessment of the directional elastic moduli of ewe vertebral cancellous bone by vibrational testing.

The ovariectomized ewe is being used as an animal model for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Data on the mechanical properties of ewe vertebral cancellous bone is needed to assess its effectiveness as a model for vertebral osteoporosis. This study utilized traditional compression testing and a novel nondestructive vibrational testing method to assess the directional mechanical properties of ewe vertebral cancellous bone. Composition and density properties were also assessed. It was hypothesized that vibrational testing would have utility in that it would allow for the anisotropic stiffness of canc

Latex elastic-induced periodontal damage: a case report on the subsequent orthodontic management.

Proper management of a malocclusion relies on a basic understanding of the development of the dentition and the craniofacial complex. Diagnosis should only be formulated after all the relevant diagnostic records, including clinical examination and history, are reviewed. Armed with this information, the dentist forms the treatment plan. The mere occurrence of a malocclusion does not constitute a need for treatment. Injudicious intervention can be counterproductive or destructive. Through a case report, the deleterious effects of improper case management and questionable treatment mechanics are

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing in forearm shaft fractures in children: 85 cases.

The results of elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) of 85 forearm fractures in children are reported. A single curved nail was inserted into each forearm bone with closed reduction. Immediate mobilization was allowed postoperatively. In a 3 year 6 month follow-up of 76 patients, 92% had excellent results with a full range of movement. There were neither nonunions nor infections. ESIN is recommended in the treatment of displaced forearm fractures in children older than 10 years of age, and in younger children when conservative treatment fails.

[Early thoracotomy and chest wall stabilization with elastic rib clamps (author's transl)].

In patients with chest injuries, serial rib fractures and intrathoracic lacerations the indication for primary thoracotomy is usually limited to life-threatening organ ruptures. In our own experience with 18 patients primary thoracotomy offers the chance of immediate closure of lung lacerations, suture of pleural and pericardial tears, ligature of torn intercostal vessels and stabilization of the chest wall by elastic rib clamps "Essener Model". Postoperative respiration, freedom of pain, is restored immediately and therefore complications and duration of high-risk respirator treatment can be

Abnormalities in lung elastic properties and surfactant function in adult respiratory distress syndrome.

We have examined the lungs from five patients who died with the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Pressure volume curves were obtained and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was studied on a surface balance. The pressure volume curves revealed reduced compliance compared to normal or near normal lungs. A significant loss of volume was also found. The data obtained from the surface balance studies show a normal range of minimum surface tension when compared to "normals," but the ARDS lung lavage fluid revealed an increase in surface film compressibility relative to "normal." The increased c

Dynamic Arterial Elastance: Physiologic Basis, Current Clinical Evidence, and Future Directions.

Restoring arterial pressure in hypotensive shock is a primary resuscitation goal, yet increases in cardiac output after fluid administration do not consistently produce meaningful increases in arterial pressure. This dissociation highlights the importance of understanding pressure-flow interactions during hemodynamic interventions. Dynamic arterial elastance (EaDyn) is a functional hemodynamic index proposed to characterize these interactions. Rather than reflecting static vascular resistance, EaDyn is hypothesized to describe the dynamic relationship between cardiac output and arterial load w

Second-order elasticities for ecology and evolution: Unraveling nonlinear fitness responses to perturbations.

In ecology and evolutionary biology, understanding the relationship between vital rates (e.g., survival, development, reproduction) and population growth is essential to elucidate how life history strategies are shaped by natural selection. Yet most established demographic methods rely on linear assumptions that rank the importance of vital rates but are insensitive to whether the returns of the population growth rate are diminishing or accelerating. Here, we introduce the second-order elasticities of mean individual fitness in the population, the S-elasticity. The S-elasticity is a proportion…

Passive Metasurface Tweezers for Multi-Scale Orbital Transport and Trapping on Elastic Plates.

Acoustic manipulation on solid surfacesis often constrained by limited wave-field reconfigurability and reliance on complex active excitation, hindering the simultaneous realization of particle confinement and controlled rotation. Here, we present a passive, subwavelength-encoded platform that enables cross-scale confinement and orbital manipulation on an open thin plate under single-channel power-source excitation. By integrating graded-phase, high-transmission labyrinthine superstructures, the platform enables precise spatial phase modulation without electronic modulation. The system preserv

Elastic Compression Attenuates Inflammatory Response in a Model of Acute Subcutaneous Abdominal Inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Acute inflammation, when unresolved, can lead to complications that impair tissue repair and therapeutic outcomes. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we employed a model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute subcutaneous abdominal inflammation in mice to investigate the modulatory effects of elastic compression. METHODS: LPS administration elicited a robust inflammatory response, characterized by increased leukocyte infiltration, edema, and upregulation of pro-inflammatory mediators. Elastic compression significantly attenuated this response, reducing leukocyte counts in subcutaneous

A Piezoelectric Microtool for In Vitro Elastic Modulus Measurement and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Boundary Identification.

Accurate identification of tumor boundaries is crucial for effective local treatment and protection of surrounding healthy tissue. However, current methods for rapidly characterizing local tissue biomechanical properties remain limited. In this study, we present a novel MEMS-integrated piezoelectric sensor-based medical microtool (IPS-MMT), this device can map the elastic modulus of local tissues in real time and at the sub-millimeter scale, enabling rapid and localized measurements under controlled in vitro conditions. Our device features the integration of a 100 µm‑thick piezoelectric sensor

Dynamic Ultrasound Evaluation Supraspinatus Tendon Injuries Using a Pilates Elastic Band.

Supraspinatus tendon tears are a common cause of shoulder pain and dysfunction. Although magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography arthrography are still considered the gold standard, ultrasound offers a reliable, accessible, and radiation-free alternative. However, identifying tears can be challenging, particularly for less experienced operators. This technical note describes a simple dynamic ultrasound maneuver employing a Pilates elastic band. With the patient in a modified Crass position, the band is secured around the pelvis to provide controlled resistance during active lateral

Collective dynamics and synchronization of coupled hair-bundle models with elastic and viscous interactions.

Despite extensive studies of single hair-bundle dynamics, comparatively little attention has been paid to the collective dynamics arising in coupled hair-bundle systems. In this work, we investigate the collective dynamics of coupled hair bundles using a simplified dimensionless mechanical model that captures the essential nonlinear features of hair-bundle activity. We focus on two physically motivated interaction mechanisms: elastic and viscous coupling between neighboring bundles. The stability of synchronized motion is first analyzed using the master stability function framework and complem

Textile Encoding Inspired by Langer Lines via Elastically Graded Embroidered Tessellations.

Morphological anisotropies and nonlinear mechanical properties shape the kinematic agility of organisms and engineered structures. Tissues, such as skin, act as biological metamaterials whose internal structures, such as packed collagen fibers, produce nonlinear and directional responses. Similarly, hierarchical thread packing governs the mechanical response of textiles. However, the capability of encoding textiles at the fabric level and at a sufficient resolution remains limited. Embroidering triangularly tiled zigzag patterns of inextensible thread on a stretchable fabric is demonstrated to

The Plasmodium CSP repeats have elastic properties with a critical role in sporozoite motility.

The Plasmodium circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is the major surface protein of the sporozoite, the infective stage of the malaria parasite. The central repeat region of CSP is the primary immunological target of the sporozoite stage, yet little is known about its structure or function. Here, we show that sporozoite mutants with truncated or scrambled CSP repeats exhibit impaired motility due to altered adhesion site formation and dynamics. Since CSP forms the environment in which the thrombospondin-related anonymous protein (TRAP)-containing adhesion sites assemble, our data suggest that the de

Response Surface Optimization, Fabrication and In-vitro Investigation of Elastic Nanovesicles Loaded with Flunarizine.

BACKGROUND: Different variables have been used for the preparation of elastic nanovesicles. In this work, the ethanol injection method has been used to prepare flunarizine spanlastic nanovesicles and study the potential of these variables on vesicle size, encapsulation efficiency, and vesicle elasticity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to encapsulate flunarizine dihydrochloride (FHC), a medication with low solubility in water, within nano-elastic vesicles made from Span 60. These vesicles, known as nano-spanlastics, were developed to provide non-invasive trans-nasal delivery and of…
