Study of colloidal quantum-dot surfaces using an innovative thin-film positron 2D-ACAR method.

Nanosized inorganic particles are of great interest because their electronic properties can be easily tailored, providing a tremendous potential for applications in optoelectronic devices, light-emitting diodes, solar cells and hydrogen storage. Confinement of electrons and holes to dimensions comparable to their wavelength leads to quantum-well states with modified wavefunctions and density of states. Surface phenomena are crucial in determining nanoparticle properties in view of their large surface-to-volume ratio. Despite a wealth of information, many fundamental questions about the nature

[Optical and photoelectrochemical properties of Langmuir films of a Zn-complex of ethioporphyrin II].

The optical and photoelectrochemical properties of Zn ethioporphyrin II (ZnEP) Langmuir films deposited on an SnO2-optically transparent electrode were investigated. Absorption and fluorescence spectra were utilized to control the film structure. The main three factors, in our opinion, act on the photovoltage, namely, film thickness, ZnEP aggregate formation and the total ZnEP concentration in the monolayer. It was shown that the photopotential decreases as the amount of ZnEP aggregates in the film decreases, and the photopotential increases with surface pressure transferred to the SnO2 layer;

Membrane resistance properties of pineal photoreceptors in the trout.

Intracellular recordings were obtained from pineal photoreceptors of the trout Salmo irideus. Illumination produced graded hyperpolarizing responses whose time course resembled that of retinal cones in lower vertebrates. Current-voltage relations were derived by using a voltage-clamp technique in the dark and during illumination. Membrane resistance values obtained in the dark were about 550 M omega, and they increased during illumination. The extrapolated reversal potential of the photocurrent is about 55 mV above the dark membrane potential, indicating that an ionic mechanism similar to that

Rapid mechanical and thermal changes in the garfish olfactory nerve associated with a propagated impulse.

Mechanical and thermal changes associated with a propagated nerve impulse were determined using the garfish olfactory nerve. Production of an action potential was found to be accompanied by swelling of the nerve fibers. The swelling starts nearly at the onset of the action potential and reaches its peak at the peak of the action potential. There is a decrease in the length of the fibers while an impulse travels along the fibers. The time-course of the initial heat was determined at room temperature using heat-sensors with a response-time of 2-3 ms. Positive heat production was found to start a

Radio-frequency catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias: appraisal of an evolving therapeutic modality.

Since its introduction in 1985, there have been numerous reports of the use of radio-frequency (RF) current as an alternative energy source for catheter ablation. RF current (frequency range 150 kHz to 1 MHz), when delivered in bipolar mode, causes desiccation of tissue by creating a localized area of heat that results in discrete coagulation necrosis. An equivalent energy source such as direct current (DC) shock can be delivered at lower power (5 to 30 W) and lower voltage (30 to 80 V) for a longer pulse duration (10 to 60 seconds), thus eliminating barotraumatic effects. Because of its high

An autoradiographic study of binding of iodinated spider toxin to lobster muscle.

Distribution of the binding sites of Joro spider toxin (JSTX), a specific inhibitor of the glutamate receptors in the crustacean neuromuscular synapse, was studied by using autoradiography. JSTX was synthesized and made radioactive by conjugation with iodine-125. 125I-JSTX irreversibly blocked the excitatory postsynaptic potentials of the lobster neuromuscular synapse in a similar manner as the natural spider toxin. Light microscopic autoradiography of 125I-JSTX treated muscle showed sporadic aggregates of reduced silver grains on the surface of muscles. Electron microscopy of adjoining ultrat

Myoelectric activity of gastric antrum and jejunum in anaesthetised guinea pigs.

The myoelectric activity of gastric antrum and jejunum was recorded in anaesthetised guinea pigs with Ag-AgCl electrodes. The investigation demonstrated the presence of slow waves and spike potentials. The variability in the pattern of myoelectric activity observed in our study might be due to anaesthesia.

Changes in Ca++ activity and DC potential in experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops.

We found changes in Ca++ activity and DC potential during the development of experimentally induced endolymphatic hydrops in guinea pigs. These findings indicate that there is some correlation between Ca++ activity and DC potential in the cochlear endolymph.

Phasor diagram: a comparative study between normal ears and otosclerotic ears.

The authors report their results from phase angle measurements by admittancemeter obtained by means of the phasor diagram, and conductance and susceptance tympanograms. The study was carried out on normal ears and otosclerotic ears. The authors noted a wide range of phase angle values and an absence of significant difference between the two populations studied.

Mononeuropathy multiplex (AAEE case report #11).

Mononeuropathy multiplex is a syndrome of diverse causes, the most common of which is nerve ischemia due to microangiopathy associated with diabetes or the collagen-vascular diseases. The acquired inflammatory demyelinating neuropathies invariably are multifocal, although the clinical manifestations of these and other multifocal neuropathies may appear symmetrical. The identification of multifocal neuropathies is important because of the frequent therapeutic implications. A case of mononeuropathy multiplex associated with polyarteritis nodosa is described.

Effects of ischemia on the function and structure of the cat carotid body.

Interrupting the blood supply to the carotid body by ligating arteries of its vascular peduncle altered the chemoreceptive properties of the carotid nerve and produced structural changes in parenchymal (glomus and sustentacular) cells. The onset of ischemia was marked by an increase in the discharge of both A (myelinated) and C (unmyelinated) sensory fibers followed by depression and finally by receptor silence. The discharge of A-fibers disappeared after 30-50 min and that of C-fibers after 60-90 min. During ischemia of 15-60 min duration the threshold to pharmacological (NaCN, ACh) and 'natu

Axonal branching pattern and coupling mechanisms of the cerebral giant neurones in the snail, Lymnaea stagnalis.

The axonal branching pattern of the two cerebral giant neurones (CGCs) of Lymnaea stagnalis was studied with intrasomatically applied horseradish peroxidase. The cells are symmetrical. Each CGC projects to the ipsilateral n. labialis medius and n. arteriae labialis, the subcerebral commissure, and to all ipsi- and contralateral buccal nerves. The contralateral buccal nerves are reached via the ipsilateral cerebro-buccal connective and the buccal commissure. The CGC fire action potentials 1:1 in a driver-follower relationship. Each cell is capable of both driving and following. The relationship

The effect of scorpion venoms on the sodium currents of the squid giant axon.

1. The effect of externally applied scorpion venoms (0.1--0.5 mg/ml., species Leiurus quinquestriatus and Centruroides sculpturatus) on the Na currents of intracellularly perfused squid giant axons has been studied with the voltage-clamp method. 2. The venoms from the two species had the same effect. They reduced the size of the peak conductance but had little effect on its kinetics (time to peak, time constant of inactivation) and on its steady-state inactivation. The venoms increased markedly, however, the maintained conductance and the time constants of its turning-on and turning-off. 3. Th

Gas chromatographic determination of residual methylene chloride and trichloroethylene in decaffeinated instant and ground coffee with electrolytic conductivity and electron capture detection.

A method is described for the quantitative determination of residual methylene chloride (MC) and trichloroethylene (TCE) in decaffeinated instant and ground roasted coffees. The residual solvents were isolated by a closed system vacuum distillation technique with toluene as a carrier solvent, chromatographed on Chromosorb 102, detected by both electron capture and electrolytic conductivity detectors, and quantitated by comparison with an internal standard. Average recoveries of MC from instant and ground coffees spiked at 1, 10, and 25 ppm were 100.0 (88-113), 93.2 (92-95), and 97.7% (94-102%)

Membrane properties of Aplysia neurones intracellularly injected with phospholipases A and C.

1. The effects of phospholipases A from bee venom and from porcine pancreas and of phospholipases C from Clostridium welchii and Bacillus cereus on active and passive membrane properties of Aplysia neurones have been studied. Consistent alterations in electrical membrane properties were found following intracellular application of three of these enzymes.2. Bee venom phospholipase A produced a rapid decrease of membrane potential and resistance. Voltage clamping revealed a marked depression of peak transient current with little or no effect in the late outward current.3. Mammalian phospholipase

Rapid automated disgnosis of bacteremia by impedance detection.

Lysis and filtration of blood culture specimens were combined with impedance detection of bacterial growth to facilitate the diagnosis of bacteremia. A blood lysis-filtration technique (Zierdt et al., 1976) was coupled to a simple, inexpensive automated detection system. The practical and technical aspects of the impedance detection system are discussed. This new blood culturing system was compared to a conventional system for 264 aerobic blood cultures. A 30-ml sample of the blood-broth mixture was withdrawn from the conventional aerobic blood culture bottle and processed in parallel. Excludi

The bicarbonate ion pump in the endothelium which regulates the hydration of rabbit cornea.

1. Studies were made on the short-circuit current (s.c.c.) and fluid transport across rabbit corneal endothelium. 2. Normal s.c.c. of 27 muA.cm-2 is reduced to 19 muA.cm-2 in CO2-free Ringer, to 9 muA. cm-2 in HCO-3 -free Ringer and to zero in CO2 and HCO-3 -free Ringer. 3. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors reduce s.c.c. from 27 to 19 muA.cm-2. Removal of exogenous CO2 causes no further reduction in s.c.c. 4. In CO2-free Ringer, net exogenous bicarbonate translocation is equal to s.c.c. 5. In all cases studied, net fluid transport across the endothelium in open circuit is directly proportional to
