Characteristics of sympathetic reflexes evoked by electrical stimulation of phrenic nerve afferents.

In chloralose-anaesthetized cats, sympathetic reflex responses were recorded in left cardiac and renal nerve during stimulation of afferent fibres in the ipsilateral phrenic nerve. In cardiac nerve, a late reflex potential with a mean onset latency of 75.6 +/- 13.8 ms was regularly recorded which, in 20% of the experiments, was preceded by an early, very small reflex component (latency between 35 and 52 ms). In contrast, in renal nerve only a single reflex component after a mean latency of 122.1 +/- 13.1 ms was observed. Bilateral microinjections of the GABA-agonist muscimol into the rostral v

Chronic dermal ulcer healing enhanced with monophasic pulsed electrical stimulation.

The purposes of this randomized, double-blind, multicenter study were to compare healing of chronic dermal ulcers treated with pulsed electrical stimulation with healing of similar wounds treated with sham electrical stimulation and to evaluate patient tolerance to the therapeutic protocol. Forty-seven patients, aged 29 to 91 years, with 50 stage II, III, and IV ulcers were randomly assigned to either a treatment group (n = 26) or a control (sham treatment) group (n = 24). Treated wounds received 30 minutes of pulsed cathodal electrical stimulation twice daily at a pulse frequency of 128 pulse

[Dynamics of the respiratory center activity during electrical stimulation of the diaphragmatic nerve].

The adoption of artificial rhythm of electrical stimulation of diaphragmatic nerve was found to be determined by the force and rate of artificial contractions of the diaphragm, by the concentration of barbiturates in the blood and by gaseous composition of inspired air in anesthetized dogs. The time interval between the onset of artificial contraction and onset of natural one seems to characterize functional activity of respiratory center and to result from inhibitory afferent effect of the lungs' mechanoreceptors, on the one hand, and from activating effects of central and peripheral chemorec

Electrical stimulation of ligament healing. An experimental study of the patellar ligament of rabbits.

To examine the effects of direct electric current on ligament healing in rabbits, a full-thickness defect of the patellar ligament was electrically stimulated for time periods of up to seven weeks. The rabbits were randomly assigned to biomechanical and biochemical studies, and healing was evaluated by these parameters. Electrical stimulation was shown to restore tensile stiffness in a short period of time and to decrease the relative proportion of Type III collagen more rapidly than in the control group. However, electrical stimulation did not change the collagen content of newly formed tissu

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation treatment of sickle cell pain crises.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used in a variety of acute and chronic painful conditions, but has not been studied in sickle cell pain crises. We compared TENS versus placebo in a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study involving 60 trials in 4 crisis severity categories. TENS electrodes were applied to the area of severest pain and patients' pain ratings and medication usage were evaluated over a 4-hour period. Pain ratings and analgesic requirements at 1 and 4 h from onset of study were similar in the TENS and placebo groups. Patients assessments of overall tr

[Potentials and limits of transesophageal electrical stimulation of the heart in diagnosing supraventricular tachyarrhythmias].

The results of intracardiac electrophysiological examination were compared to those of transesophageal electrostimulation of the left atrium in combination with the recording of its electrical activity in 48 patients with paroxysms of reciprocal supraventricular tachycardia and in 28 patients with paroxysms of ciliary arrhythmia. In order to diagnose a form of tachyarrhythmia using the latter method some criteria were revealed. Transesophageal electrostimulation of the left atrium was shown to be quite an informative method to be widely used in clinical practice for the diagnosis of paroxysmal

Electrical stimulation in treating spasticity resulting from spinal cord injury.

To study the efficacy of electrical stimulation in treating spasticity of six spinal cord injured patients, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) was applied to the dermatomes belonging to the same spinal cord level as the selected spastic muscle group. Spasticity was assessed in knee extensors by a pendulum test in which the knee joint angle of a swinging lower leg was recorded with an electrogoniometer. TENS was found to produce a noticeable decrease of spasticity in three of the patients, but had little effect on the others.

Inhibition of pressor responses induced by electrical stimulation of the mesencephalon by vasopressin and oxytocin.

Receptors for vasopressin are present in blood vessels, kidney and the brain. Earlier studies indicated that the memory and learning effects of vasopressin are exerted via receptor sites in the brain and that the classical hormonal effects in the periphery can be dissociated in the molecule from the central action. Vasopressin also affects blood pressure regulation. Arg8-vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin upon intracerebroventricular administration reduced the pressor response elicited by electrical stimulation of the rat mesencephalic reticular formation. Desglycinamide-AVP also exerted this effe

The lack of effects of somatostatin on gastric responses induced by electrical vagal stimulation.

The effects of somatostatin on ulcer formation, gastric acid secretion and histamine release were assessed during vagus nerve stimulation in rats. Direct electrical vagal stimulation significantly increased histamine release and acid output in gastric secretion but decreased mast cell counts in gastric glandular mucosa. Hemorrhagic ulceration on the gastric glandular mucosa was also observed. Somatostatin pretreatment (10 micrograms/kg) did not inhibit gastric ulcer formation, gastric acid secretion or histamine release induced by vagal stimulation. Cimetidine (an H2 blocker) pretreatment, how

Peripheral and transcortical loops activated by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve in the monkey.

Peripheral and supraspinal loops activated by electrical stimulation of the tibial nerve were studied in alert monkeys. Weak conditioning stimuli below the threshold for muscle contraction and strong conditioning stimuli which elicited a direct motor response and an H-reflex were applied to the tibial nerve, while soleus EMG was recorded. The motoneuronal excitability was measured with a test H-reflex for different intervals between conditioning and test stimuli. A facilitation of the motoneuronal pool occurred with a latency of about 50 ms for weak, as well as strong, conditioning stimuli. Th

Pharmacology of the neurogenic oedema response to electrical stimulation of the saphenous nerve in the rat.

The pharmacology of the early and delayed phases of the neurogenic oedema responses to electrical stimulation of the saphenous nerve was studied in anesthetized rats using a quantitative Evans blue dye leakage technique. The immediate response to 5 min nerve stimulation was not reduced by aprotinin or mepyramine in combination with methysergide. However the response measured 10 min later and also that to 15 min nerve stimulation were reduced by these agents indicating that kinins and mast cell amines might be released after some delay, but they did not contribute significantly to the early pha

Brain stem potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the cochlea in human subjects.

Brain stem potentials were recorded from scalp electrode to biphasic square wave electrical stimulation of implanted electrodes in the cochlea of three patients. Reliable potentials could be recorded that appeared 1.5 to 2.0 msec prior to the customary acoustically-evoked brain stem potentials. The effects of variations in electrical stimulus parameters of rate and intensity were measured. Brain stem potentials can provide objective indices of the effectiveness of electrical stimulation of the cochlea in man.

[Abolition by naloxone of the inhibitory effect of peripheral electrical stimulation on the blink reflex].

The effects of a low frequency (2 c/sec) peripheral stimulation (electro-acupuncture, EA) on the nociceptive (R2) response of the blink reflex elicited by supra-orbital nerve stimulation (0.1 msec, 1 shock/8 sec) were studied in 10 healthy subjects. EA stimulation produced a very significant inhibition of the reflex in 8 subjects. Double-blind injection of naloxone (0.8 mg) reversed this inhibition while no signiificant change was observed with placebo. These results suggest that EA stimulation induces the release of endogenous opiates.

Effects of electrical intravaginal stimulation on bladder volume: an experimental and clinical study.

Clinical observations have indicated that not only stress incontinence due to defective urethral closure but also urge incontinence due to bladder hyperactivity can be successfully treated by electrical stimulation of the pelvic floor. Clinical investigations revealed that intravaginal electrical stimulation caused bladder inhibition registered as a volume increase. This inhibition was most marked at a low stimulation frequency (10 Hz). Animal experiments indicated that the bladder inhibition was achieved by autonomic spinal reflex mechanisms activated by stimulation of pudendal afferents.

Electrical self-stimulation of the brain: a model for the behavioral evaluation of toxic agents.

Rats implanted chronically with electrodes in the posterior lateral hypothalamus were trained to press levers in order to stimulate the brain electrically. Brief exposures to low oxygen concentrations reduced the lever pressing rate proportionately with the reduction in inspired oxygen. Similar reductions in self-stimulation rates could be observed in animals exposed to carbon monoxide or the organic solvent, trichloroethylene. Prolonged exposures of animals to hypoxia in chambers where self-stimulation rates as well as food and water intake via lever pressing were monitored, indicated that as
