[Are subcortical signs in the EEG a reliable indication of brain stem displacement and impaction processes by intracranial space-occupying processes? A comparative computer tomography-electroencephalography study].

Within the scope of an elektroencephalographic-computertomographic comperative study carried out in 430 patients, the concurrence of secondary brain stem damage due to mass displacement and herniation processes and parroxysmal generalised slow activity in the EEG ("intermittant frontal delta rhythms", "projected discharges", "subcortical signs") in intracranial space-occupying processes were studied among others. The occurrence of the EEG pattern was independent of the presence of brain stem displacements in about 20 and 25 per cent, respectively, of the 152 patients with supratentorial space

Comparative Evaluation of Changes in Brain Activity Among Edentulous Patients Rehabilitated With Conventional Complete Dentures and Tooth-Supported Overdentures Using Electroencephalography: An In Vivo Study.

INTRODUCTION: Edentulism is associated with impaired masticatory function and reduced sensory stimulation that may adversely affect cortical activity and cognitive health. However, evidence comparing the effects of different removable prosthetic rehabilitation modalities on brain activity is limited. Our study aimed to evaluate and compare changes in brain activity using electroencephalography among completely edentulous patients rehabilitated with conventional complete dentures, tooth-supported overdentures without attachments, and tooth-supported overdentures with stud attachments. MATERIAL…

Dissociable roles of frontal electroencephalography markers in depression: Predictive value of frontal alpha asymmetry and responsive changes in beta power following home-based brain stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising intervention for major depressive disorder; however, electroencephalographic (EEG) predictors of treatment response remain incompletely understood. Therefore, this study aimed to identify EEG predictors of treatment response in this population. METHODS: In this study, a subsample (n = 108) of individuals included in a multicenter, double-blind randomized controlled trial (N = 198) with baseline and week 6 EEG data was analyzed. Participants received either 6 weeks of active tDCS (6W-active; n = 65) or 3 weeks of active

Mesial temporal lobe spiking reveals distinct patterns of blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging activation using simultaneous intracranial electroencephalography-functional magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) has a high probability of becoming drug resistant and is frequently considered for surgical intervention. However, 30% of TLE cases have nonlesional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which is associated with worse surgical outcomes. Characterizing interactions between temporal and extratemporal structures in these patients may help understand these poor outcomes. Simultaneous intracranial electroencephalography-functional MRI (iEEG-fMRI) can measure the hemodynamic changes associated with interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) recorded directly …

Continuous intraoperative monitoring of middle cerebral artery blood flow velocities and electroencephalography during carotid endarterectomy. A comparison of the two methods to detect cerebral ischemia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Intraoperative monitoring of brain function may influence the outcome of carotid endarterectomy (CEA). METHODS: We performed transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitoring of middle cerebral artery blood flow velocities (VMCAs) and eight-channel electroencephalographic (EEG) recording simultaneously in 82 patients undergoing CEA. Thiopental narcosis limited EEG interpretation in 11 patients, thus allowing direct comparison of both methods in 71 patients. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between VMCA decrease and the frequency of EEG changes after carotid clamping (

Time-trend analysis of the center frequency of the intrinsic mode function from the Hilbert-Huang transform of electroencephalography during general anesthesia: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesiologists are required to maintain an optimal depth of anesthesia during general anesthesia, and several electroencephalogram (EEG) processing methods have been developed and approved for clinical use to evaluate anesthesia depth. Recently, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) was introduced to analyze nonlinear and nonstationary data. In this study, we assessed whether the changes in EEG characteristics during general anesthesia that are analyzed by the HHT are useful for monitoring the depth of anesthesia. METHODS: This retrospective observational study enrolled patients wh

The Monitoring Paradox: Frontal Electroencephalography Reveals Profound Cortical Depression Despite Cardiovascular Stability in Dogs Undergoing Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy with Isoflurane Anesthesia and Multimodal Analgesic Protocols.

Conventional monitoring relies on autonomic reflexes but fails to directly measure cortical hypnosis, creating a critical information gap regarding true brain state. The objective of this article was to evaluate the cardiorespiratory and cortical responses using frontal EEG and parasympathetic tone activity (PTA) in dogs under isoflurane anesthesia and distinct analgesic protocols. Twenty-one adult dogs (n = 7 per group) undergoing tibial plateau leveling osteotomies were assessed at 12 procedural time points using heart rate, blood pressure, Patient State Index (PSI), suppression ratio (SR),

The Efficacy of Therapies for Phantom Limb Pain in Amputees Assessed via Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) and Electroencephalography (EEG) Measures of Cortical Reorganization: A Scoping Review.

Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a prevalent and debilitating condition affecting most amputees, attributable to complex maladaptive neuroplastic changes of the peripheral and central nervous system components. Cortical reorganization, particularly within the primary motor (M1) and somatosensory (S1) cortices, has been proposed as the central phenomenon underlying PLP. Neuroimaging modalities such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) provide objective measures for evaluating these neuroplastic changes and assessing treatment efficacy. This scoping review a…

Altered spread of waves of activities at large scale is influenced by cortical thickness organization in temporal lobe epilepsy: a magnetic resonance imaging-high-density electroencephalography study.

Temporal lobe epilepsy is a brain network disorder characterized by alterations at both the structural and the functional levels. It remains unclear how structure and function are related and whether this has any clinical relevance. In the present work, we adopted a novel methodological approach investigating how network structural features influence the large-scale dynamics. The functional network was defined by the spatio-temporal spreading of aperiodic bursts of activations (neuronal avalanches), as observed utilizing high-density electroencephalography in patients with temporal lobe epilep…

Effect of remifentanil on three effect-site concentrations of propofol and their relationship during electroencephalography at loss of response, at maximum alpha power, and at onset of burst suppression: a prospective randomized trial.

PURPOSE: The effect-site concentration (Ce) at loss of response (Ce-LOR) to propofol closely correlates both with Ce as electroencephalographic alpha power becomes highest (Ce-alpha) and with Ce at onset of burst suppression (BS) (Ce-OBS), when no opioids are administered. Co-administration of opioids dose-dependently decreases Ce-LOR. We investigated the influence of remifentanil on the relationship between these three Ces. METHODS: After receiving approval from our local ethical committee, with written informed consent, we enrolled 90 participants (ASA-PS I or II) who were scheduled for ele
